22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
As we approach the start of our Jubilee with the
cleaning of the grounds on the 8
th
and the Italian Dinner on
the 15
th
, we can begin to feel the excitement in the air. As I mentioned
in my previous letters, we will take on a Capital Campaign to raise
some extra money to pay off our debt and to do some projects around
the church and school. What are these projects you ask? Well, I have
some ideas, but I am going to want to hear from you. We will be
conducting a survey in the upcoming weeks to get your input as to the
needs of St. Patrick. It will be a great opportunity for me to see from
the parishioners' perspective what our needs are. Our Jubilee slogan,
which will be used for the Capital Campaign as well as for the whole
Jubilee year, will be Remember, Respond, Renew.
A Look at God's Word!
Jesus addresses both the guests invited to a banquet and the host who does the
inviting. At first glance, his suggestion to take the lowest place of honor when
invited seems like a bit of human wisdom that might save someone a little
embarrassment -- hardly worth Luke including it in his gospel. We are alerted,
however, to a deeper meaning when we notice that Luke mentions that Jesus is
telling us this as a parable. A parable surprises us with a meaning that is beyond the obvious and upsets
our usual way of thinking. The deeper dimension in this case is whether we have been exalting ourselves
before God.
Jesus is not particularly concerned about the little embarrassment of having to take a lower place at a
banquet. He is concerned about the possibility of a Big Embarrassment before the judgment of God --
the host who has invited us to the banquet of life. What Jesus tells us about the way we extend
hospitality is most radical in its life implications. The natural human tendency is to treat those people
well who have or who will treat us well. There is nothing wrong with this sort of business deal -- the
world would not function very well unless we made business arrangements every day. Jesus, however, is
talking about a divine kind of hospitality, and asks us to imitate him in that. Our generosity ought to be a
characteristic of our personal freedom, not dependent on how people treat us. And besides, to attempt to
determine who deserves our love implies a judgment of another person's soul that
only God can make. In this we then grow in humility.
When I was in the Seminary there was a retreat conducted by Fr. William
McNamara who started the Nada (Nothing) Community, a community of men and
women who lived the life of hermits in Nova Scotia. He gave the best definition on
humility that I have ever heard. I shared this with you before in homilies, but I want
to share it with you again. Humility is not thinking
less about yourself; it is thinking about yourself less.
I will be leaving on the 5
th
for our Fundraising
Cruise to Alaska. I ask that you pray for me and the
parishioners who will be joining us on the trip. I will be back on the 16
th
.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Loiselle on their 60th Wedding Anniversary!
First Reading -- You sent your holy spirit
from on high and thus were the paths of
those on earth made straight (Wis. 9:13-18).
Psalm -- In every age, O Lord, you have
been our refuge (Psalm 90).
Second Reading -- I did not want to do
anything without your consent, so that the
good you do might not be forced but
voluntary (Philemon 9-10, 12-17).
Gospel -- Which of you wishing to
construct a tower does not first sit down and
calculate the cost to see if there is enough
for its completion? (Luke 14:25-33).
Is God really the center of my life
instead of possessions and relationships?
Do I visit or call on someone
who is ill or lonely and give of my time?
Readings Ahead:
September 9, 2007
23rd Sunday
in Ordinary Time
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
HUMILITY
Have you ever been in a group of people--maybe on a tour,
at a social gathering, or at church--and discovered that you
have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO,
great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that
you didn't say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second
thought is how much they seemed like such "regular" folks.
What is it that makes people seem so "regular"? Today's
readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of
humility.
It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen
how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we
donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these
accolades make a difference to people, and if
we don't tell them, how will they ever know?
But if our actions demonstrate our values,
people will recognize our worth on their own.
The words of Jesus show us how much better it
is to let someone else recognize our worth than
to be embarrassed because someone did not.

ment of his Body and Blood. This
initiative will begin October 7th with a
six-week faith-sharing program on
the Eucharist, entitled "Eucharist-
Source and Summit". During this
time we will look at the history of the

celebrates
potential. In the Office of
Readings for today we find
these words: "Today the
Virgin is born, tended and
formed, and prepared for her
role as Mother of God, who
is the universal King of the
ages. Therefore, let all
creation sing and dance and
unite to make worthy contribution to the celebration of
this day. Today this created world is raised to the
dignity of a holy place for him who made all things. The
creature is newly prepared to be a divine dwelling place
for the Creator." At her birth, the Virgin Mary already
had the gifts she would need to answer the call of God
to bear his son. We, too, have been given by the Lord
all we need to answer his call in our lives. The
challenge of stewardship is to have the sensitivity to
hear that call and the willingness to answer it.
