FIRST FRIDAY
FIRST FRIDAY
FIRST FRIDAY
FIRST FRIDAY D
EVOTION
TO
THE
SACRED HEART
OF
JESUS

The First Friday of each month
was designated by our Savior
Himself as a day to be
consecrated to honoring His
Sacred Heart ... As the object of
this devotion is to make our
Savior Jesus Christ ardently and perfectly loved,
and to make reparation for the outrages offered to
Him in the past, as well as for those which He daily
receives in the Blessed Eucharist ... Jesus Christ
merits our love at all times, but alas! He is
despised and outraged in the Sacrament of His love
at all times, and so people should at all times make
reparation to Him.
We should then adore Jesus Christ in this
august Sacrament, make a fervent act of love to
Jesus in the tabernacle, thank Him for having
instituted this Mystery of love, express our sorrow
at seeing Him so abandoned, and resolve to visit
Him as soon as possible and love Him unceasingly.
Attendance at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is
assuredly the best means of honoring and loving
the adorable Heart of Jesus.
Starting November 2nd and the First Friday of
each month thereafter, a Mass in honor of the
Sacred Heart will be offered at 6:30 PM as part
of St. Patrick's Golden Jubilee celebration. This is
a wonderful opportunity for those who cannot
attend morning Mass to obtain the special graces of
this devotion.
A COVERED DISH DINNER, hosted by the
Knights of Columbus, will follow the Mass in the
Msgr. McCall Hall. All parishioners and guests are
invited. Bring your favorite dish to share!
"O God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
How wonderful it was to see so many of you come out to honor our
Mother, our Lady, and our Queen of the Most Holy Rosary! I would like
to thank Gene Tabachuk for all his hard work in organizing this great
event in the life of our parish.
As I mentioned at most Masses last week, to the Praise and Glory of Almighty
God, we have been able to restore the Tabernacle from the original High Altar
before the renovations of the 1980s. I am most grateful to the families who, in
memory of loved ones, have enabled us to beautify our sanctuary for our anniversary. Most of the comments I have
heard are positive and express how much warmer the Church now feels. As for the last touch of the Crucifix, it will be
coming from Italy and hand carved, therefore it will take about 3 months to be completed, but let us all pray real hard
that we will have it for Christmas. Again, I thank you for your patience in this endeavor. The final product will be well
worth the wait.
The Offering of Mass for the repose of the soul of the faithful departed is linked with our belief in
Purgatory. We believe that if a person has died, fundamentally believing in God, but
with venial sins and the hurt caused by sin, then God, in His divine love and mercy,
will first purify the soul. After this purification has been completed, the soul will
have the holiness and purity needed to share in the beatific vision in heaven.
While each individual stands judgment before the Lord and must render an account of his life,
the communion of the Church shared on this earth continues, except for those souls dammed to hell. The Vatican
Council II affirmed, "This sacred council accepts loyally the venerable faith of our ancestors in the living communion
which exists between us and our brothers who are in the glory of heaven or who are yet being purified after their
death..." (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, No. 51). Therefore, just as we pray for each other and share each
other's burdens now, the faithful on earth can offer prayers and sacrifices to help the departed souls undergoing
purification, and no better prayer could be offered than that of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Mirae Caritatis (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the
connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: "The grace of mutual love among the living, strengthened
and increased by the Sacrament of the Eucharist, flows `especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass]' to all who
belong to the Communion of Saints. For the Communion of Saints is simply... the mutual sharing of help, atonement,
prayers, and benefits among the faithful, those already in the heavenly fatherland, those consigned to the purifying fire,
and those still making their pilgrim way here on earth. These all form one city, whose head is Christ, and whose vital
principle is love. Faith teaches that although the august Sacrifice can be offered to God alone, it can, nevertheless, be
celebrated in honor of the saints now reigning in heaven with God, who has crowned them, to obtain their intercession
for us, and also, according to apostolic tradition, to wash away the stains of those brethren who died in the Lord but
without yet being wholly purified." Think of this point: The Holy Mass transcends time and space, uniting the faithful in
heaven, on earth and in purgatory into a Holy Communion, and the Holy Eucharist Itself augments our union with
Christ, wipes away venial sins, and preserves us from future mortal sins (cf. Catechism, No. 1391-1396). Therefore, the
offering of Mass and other prayers or sacrifices for the intentions of the faithful departed are good and holy acts.
This practice of
offering Mass and
prayers is not new.
... We on earth know neither the judgment of God nor the divine time frame; so, there is
always goodness in remembering our departed and commending them to God through
prayer and sacrifice. However, if indeed the departed soul has been purified and now
rests in God's presence in heaven, then those prayers and sacrifices offered benefit the
other souls in purgatory through the love and mercy of God.
Therefore, we find not only the origins of this practice dating to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its
importance. When we face the death of someone, even "a person who is not Catholic", to have a Mass offered for the
repose of his soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet
of flowers. Most importantly, we should always remember our own dearly departed loved ones in the Holy Mass and
through our own prayers and sacrifices to help in their gaining eternal rest.
At St. Patrick we will continue to offer prayers for the faithful departed throughout the month of November. Please
record the names of your loved ones on the offertory envelopes for November 2nd, All Souls Day,
and they will be placed on the Altar and remembered in all weekend and daily Masses throughout
the month. In a special way we remember all the faithful departed who were part of our 50-year
history and part of the fabric of what makes St. Patrick Parish what it is today.
Praised Be Jesus Christ! ~
Fr. Pecchie
JMJ
The Catechism asserts, "From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of
the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice,
so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God" (No. 1032).
Actually! This `beginning' has roots even in the Old Testament. Judas Maccabees offered prayers and sacrifices for
the Jewish soldiers who had died wearing pagan amulets, which were forbidden by the Law. II Maccabees reads,
"Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out" (12:43) and "Thus, [Judas Macca-
bees] made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from sin" (12:46).
"What if the person's soul
has already been purified
and gone to heaven?"

First Reading -- Lord, you love all things
that are, and loathe nothing that you have
made (Wisdom 11:22 -- 12:2).
Psalm -- I will praise your name for ever,
my king and my God (Psalm 145).
Second Reading -- May God bring to
fulfillment every good purpose and every
effort of faith (2 Thessalonians 1:11 --
2:2).
Gospel -- Today salvation has come to
Zacchaeus' house, because Zacchaeus too
is a descendant of Abraham (Luke 19:1-
10).
Do I ignore criticism because I am afraid to
admit my failings? How do I relate to
those I consider to be sinners?
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
NO COMPARISONS

How many times have we read or heard about someone who's
gotten into trouble maybe even fired from a job because of a brush
with the law? While our "Christian" minds tell us to be sorry and even
pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying,
"I'm glad I would never do anything like that."
And perhaps we wouldn't.
But are there some things we do that
are still not pleasing in God's eyes?
Today's readings caution us not to
look so intently at someone else's
wrongdoing that we overlook our
own weaknesses and shortcomings.
When we measure ourselves against
the worst people we can think of, we
come out looking pretty good. There
is a danger, however, in using
someone else's behavior as a way of
reflecting our own goodness.

St. Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres (1579-1639)
Patron Saint of Hairdressers
Feast Day: November 3
St. Martin de Porres was born in
Lima, Peru, the illegitimate son of
a Spanish nobleman and a
Panamanian mother. At 12, he
was apprenticed to a barber-
surgeon. from whom he learned
the medical arts of the day as well
as barbering. A few years later, he entered the
Dominican order as a lay brother. He served as
infirmarian and became known for his compassionate
care of the sick and the poor. At his canonization,
Pope John XXIII said, "He loved [others] because he
honestly looked on them as God's children and as his
own brothers and sisters... He was tireless in his
efforts to reform the criminal, and he would sit up with
the sick to bring them comfort. For the poor he would
provide food, clothing, and medicine." A passionate
advocate for equal rights for all classes of people, he
is revered as the patron saint of social justice. He
was also a man of prayer, spending long hours
before the Blessed Sacrament. This good steward
humbly used all he had his prayers, his skills, his
compassion in the service of others. St. Martin de
Porres, pray for us.
