29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
All who experienced the FUN of Fun Fair had a great time! Special thanks go
out to Patty Ruppel as Fun Fair Chair with the assistance of the PTO of St. Patrick
School. I especially thank all of the parishioners who came out to offer their
assistance and take time with various shifts for the different booths, bingo, dessert emporium,
etc. I thank all who made this a great success for our Jubilee celebration.
The rosary is one of the most cherished prayers of our Catholic Church. Introduced by the
Creed, the Our Father, three Hail Marys and the Doxology ("Glory Be"), and concluded with the
Salve Regina, the rosary involves the recitation of five decades consisting of the Our Father, 10
Hail Marys and the Doxology. During this recitation, the individual meditates on the saving
mysteries of our Lord's life and the faithful witness of our Blessed Mother.
Journeying through the Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous and Glorious mysteries of the rosary,
the individual brings to mind our Lord's Incarnation, His Passion and Death and His
Resurrection from the dead. In so doing, the rosary assists us in growing in a deeper appreciation
of these mysteries, in uniting our life more closely to our Lord and in imploring His graced
assistance to live the faith. We also ask for the prayers of our Blessed Mother, who leads all
believers to her Son.
Tradition does hold that St. Dominic (d. 1221) devised the rosary as we know it.
Moved by a vision of our Blessed Mother, he preached the use of the rosary in his missionary
work among the Albigensians, who had denied the mystery of Christ. Some scholars take
exception to St. Dominic's role in forming the rosary. The earliest accounts of his life do not
mention it, the Dominican constitutions do not link him with it and contemporaneous
portraits do not include it as a symbol to identify the saint.
The rosary gained greater popularity in the 1500s, when Moslem Turks were
ravaging Eastern Europe. Recall that in 1453, Constantinople had fallen to the Moslems,
leaving the Balkans and Hungary open to conquest. With Moslems raiding even the coast of
Italy, the control of the Mediterranean was now at stake.
In 1571, Pope Pius V, a Dominican, organized a fleet under the command of Don
Juan of Austria the half-brother of King Philip II of Spain. While preparations were
underway, the Holy Father asked all of the faithful to say the rosary and implore our Blessed
Mother's prayers, under the title Our Lady of Victory, that our Lord would grant victory to
the Christians. Although the Moslem fleet outnumbered that of the Christians in both vessels
and sailors, the forces were ready to meet in battle. The Christian flagship flew a blue banner
depicting Christ crucified. On October 7, 1571, the Moslems were defeated at the Battle of Lepanto. The following
year, Pope St. Pius V established the Feast of the Holy Rosary on October 7, where the faithful would not only
remember this victory, but also give thanks to the Lord for all of His benefits and remember the powerful
intercession of our Blessed Mother.
The fact that our Church continues to include the Feast of the Holy Rosary on the liturgical calendar testifies to
the importance and goodness of this form of prayer. Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, "The rosary is the book of the
blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the
simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the
book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The
power of the rosary is beyond description."
In this our Jubilee year let us renew our devotion to Our Lady's Rosary. As a parish and as individuals, this
powerful prayer was promised by our Lady of Fatima 90 years ago to be the only necessary weapon for peace and
tranquility in our homes and worlds. Remember the powerful words of Fr. Peyton, "A family that prays together
stays together."
Praised Be Jesus Christ!
Fr. Pecchie
PS. This is World Mission Sunday! We, who are so blessed as a country, want to be
generous in our support of the missions to aid with our prayers and financial support to
all those men and women, religious or lay, who preach the message of Jesus Christ to the
nations.
Also, let us pray for traveling mercies for Fr. Prakash who will be returning to us on Thursday
the 25
th
. We look forward to his return and to hear of all his fun with his family and friends.

First Reading -- The Lord is not deaf to the
wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when
she pours out her complaint (Sirach 35:12-
14, 16-18).
Psalm -- The Lord hears the cry of the poor
(Psalm 34).
Second Reading -- The Lord will rescue
me from every threat (2 Timothy 4:6-8,
16-18).
Gospel -- All who exalt themselves will be
humbled; all who humble themselves will
be exalted (Luke 18:9-14).
Will I reverse my "superior attitude" to
"humble" conversation with someone I may
have offended? Thank you God for loving
me unconditionally, just as I am.
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
DEPENDING ON GOD
"Getting by with a little help from our friends" is not an idea that
began with the Beatles. Certainly the idea of "getting by with a little
help from God" goes back at least to the first reading today from
Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend's
scriptures.
No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given
him, he persevered--even though he needed help from the people
around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom.
The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to
depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to
bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until
finally he met her demands.
We sometimes need to turn to
others to help us through difficult
times; but if we always turn to
God, we won't be disappointed,
for our help, the psalm assures us,
is from the Lord.

FUN FAIR THANK YOU!
The parents of St. Patrick School wish
to thank all Parishioners, Knights of Columbus and
high school students who volunteered to work at the
Fun Fair and all who supported our Fun Fair week-

a pleasure to be able to spend this time to-

making deposits and writing checks. As soon as we
have been able to determine how much money we
earned at the fair I will pass it on to all of you.
Thank you all and God bless,

ST. PATRICK'S RESPECT LIFE POSTER CONTEST
This October St. Patrick School had a very successful pro-life poster contest for the 7th and 8th graders.
Many beautiful, imaginative, colorful, creative, and most importantly, informative posters were entered. On
Wednesday, October 10th, after the 9 AM School Mass, top awards were presented to four deserving youth:
Alexandra Aponte Danielle McArn
Jessica Bautista
Matthew Fosnacht
Many thanks go to Fr. Pecchie and Sr. Veronica who without
their support this could not happen. Special thanks
also go to Mr. Joseph Blum, religious educator, who
brought it all together successfully. The Poster
Contest was sponsored by the Respect Life
Committee of the parish and the Knights of
Columbus Council 4892. Cash prizes were presented to the
winners by the Grand Knight, Bob Dasch. We hope to have
this become an annual event with current topics covered
under the Respect Life heading.
