27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Well, I thank you for all your prayers during my last week marathon of
Masses. I survived and could feel your prayers getting me through this weekend.
Fr. Bonadies will be back to assist me with the Mass schedule. It is hard to
believe that we are already in October. We all know what that means FunFair. As I said
at Mass, if you are not there it won't be any fun.
This first weekend in October is Respect Life Weekend. We pray as a church in a
nation that has legalized murder of the innocent; a greater awareness of the sanctity and
dignity of human life. What are the parameters to which we should be conscious of when it
comes to end of life issues and even more importantly when death is not imminent but our
functionality is reduced. Even the US Bishops needed assistance in this important matter,
especially with what was the proper response to the situation with those who are deemed in
a "Persistent Vegetative State" (PVS) with regards to food and water. So the Bishops asked the Congregation for
the Doctrine of Faith for a clarification on the Church's teaching. The Congregation responded on August 1, 2007.
The brief document, approved by Pope Benedict XVI, is in response to two questions posed to the congregation
by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The questions were prompted by reactions to the allocution
of Pope John Paul II in March 2004 that dealt with the use of feeding tubes in patients in a persistent vegetative
state.
Patients in a persistent vegetative state, while making up a very small percent of all patients, pose some of the
most challenging and heart wrenching situations for families and caregivers. This clarification affirms the Church's
belief in the value of their lives in spite of the circumstances of their condition.
The CDF document makes two important points. First, the provision of artificially administered nutrition and
hydration to patients in a vegetative state is morally obligatory except when they cannot be assimilated by the
patient's body (and, hence, don't achieve their purpose) or cause significant discomfort. Second, artificially
administered nutrition and hydration cannot be discontinued for a patient in a persistent vegetative state even when
physicians have determined with reasonable certainty that the patient will never recover consciousness. This is due
to the fact that the person in a persistent vegetative state retains his or her fundamental human dignity and,
therefore, must be provided ordinary and proportionate care which includes nutrition and hydration.
The Vatican has also put out a commentary on this statement of the Congregation:
It is stated, first of all, that the provision of water and food, even by artificial means, is in principle an
ordinary and proportionate means of preserving life for patients in a "vegetative state": "It is therefore
obligatory, to the extent to which, and for as long as, it is shown to accomplish its proper finality, which is
the hydration and nourishment of the patient."
It is made clear, secondly, that this ordinary means of sustaining life is to be provided also to those in a
"permanent vegetative state," since these are persons with their fundamental human dignity. When stating
that the administration of food and water is morally obligatory in principle, the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith does not exclude the possibility that, in very remote places or in situations of extreme
poverty, the artificial provision of food and water may be physically impossible, and then "ad impossibilia
nemo tenetur." However, the obligation to offer the minimal treatments that are available remains in place,
as well as that of obtaining, if possible, the means necessary for an adequate support of life. Nor is the
possibility excluded that, due to emerging complications, a patient may be unable to assimilate food and
liquids, so that their provision becomes altogether useless.
Finally, the possibility is not absolutely excluded that, in some rare cases, artificial nourishment and
hydration may be excessively burdensome for the patient or may cause significant physical discomfort, for
example resulting from complications in the use of the means employed.
These exceptional cases, however, take nothing away from the general
ethical criterion, according to which the provision of water and food, even
by artificial means, always represents a natural means for preserving life,
and is not a therapeutic treatment. Its use should therefore be considered
ordinary and proportionate, even when the "vegetative state" is prolonged.
As a people of life we have to ascent to the wisdom of our Holy Mother Church
when it comes to these difficult issues. We need to pray for ourselves and
those who face these decisions that they may stand firm in faith in direct
contradiction to the culture of death.
Praised Be Jesus Christ!
Fr. Pecchie

First Reading -- "Now I know that there is
no God in all the earth, except in Israel" (2
Kings 5:14-17).
Psalm -- The Lord has revealed to the
nations his saving power (Psalm 298).
Second Reading -- If we have died with
Christ we shall also live with Christ (2
Timothy 2:8-13).
Gospel -- The Samaritan, realizing he had
been healed, glorified God in a loud voice
(Luke 17:11-19).
Do I always express gratitude to Jesus
when I feel his healing touch?
May I respond with sincere appreciation
to God and to my neighbor when needed
and not take them for granted.
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
LET GO AND LET GOD
Many twelve-step programs use the phrase "Let go and let God."
In all their simplicity, these five words are the heart of today's
readings. For people who struggle with addictive behavior, these
words plainly remind us that we can't manage, control, or manipulate
certain areas of our lives. How many times can we look back in our
lives and find evidence of some plan at work other than our own?
These are the moments when, for
whatever reasons, we let someone
greater than ourselves work the plan.
We probably didn't even recognize
at the time that we were letting go of
anything, but in retrospect, we see
God's hand and loving presence. It
is our awareness of these moments
that gives us the courage and
initiative to let go again later on. It
is this courage and initiative that are
highlighted in today's readings. We
come to call it "faith."

SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES:
Our parish, along with many others in the
Diocese, will be involved in the Bishop's
initiative on the Eucharist. It is the
Bishop's goal, through this initiative, to
help Catholics throughout the Diocese
deepen their relationship to Christ as they celebrate and
reflect on the sacrament of his Body
and Blood. This initiative will begin this
week with a six-week faith-sharing
program on the Eucharist, entitled
"Eucharist: Source & Summit". During
this time we will look at the history of
the Eucharist, different aspects of the
Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of
the Eucharist, as well as Eucharistic
devotion. Sign-up for these groups
after all Masses this weekend. Please
prayerfully consider joining a group.
2007 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL: 340 families in our parish have made a

The Pastoral Council is a community of servant
leaders whose purpose is to assist the pastor in
discerning, through prayer and study, how the
parish can best carry out the mission of the
Church. Pastoral councils are called to model the
unity of the Body of Christ. Councils should be
representative of the diversity of the parish
community, yet united in carrying out the one
mission of the Church.

present a seminar on "Annulments in the Catholic Church."
The information presentation will be given by a judge from
the Tribunal and will provide an opportunity to explore the
various grounds for marriage nullity, dispel myths about
annulments and answer questions. If you have
experienced a failed marriage, or know someone who has,
or are just curious about the annulment process, please
consider this your personal invitation to the upcoming
seminar: "Annulments in the Catholic Church."

Feast Day: October 9
St. Denis was born in Italy and
was sent with a priest and a
deacon, Rusticus and Eleutherius,
to evangelize France. Few details
of his life are known, except that he and his
companions were martyred at Montmartre, near
Paris. Today he is venerated as the patron of
France, and, says one commentator, "We can only
conclude that the deep impression the saint made on
the people of his day must have resulted from a life of
unusual holiness." We, too, are called to holiness,
even martyrdom, though perhaps of a different kind.
St. Ambrose writes, "As there are many kinds of
persecution, so there are many kinds of martyrdom.
How many hidden martyrs there are, bearing witness
to Christ each day and acknowledging Jesus as the
Lord! Be faithful and courageous when you are
persecuted within, so that you may win approval
when you are persecuted in public." Let us be good
stewards of the faith, like St. Denis, even in situations
where it may be unpopular or dangerous to do so.
