My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today enclosed in your bulletin is the yearly financial statement for our parish. I would like to
thank the members of the finance council who assist me throughout the year in Parish finances. I
especially want to thank Frank Murphy and Paul Friederich who are sharing with you today our
financial report. They are aware of all monies taken in and all money spent. This provides checks and
balances so that you, as parishioners who give to the Lord in your offering, are assured usage beneficial to the
parish and the service of God.
For those of us who are here year round we notice our Church beginning to fill up and
we again recognize familiar faces and notice some new ones. In the name of St. Patrick
Parishioners and on their behalf, I would like to welcome back all of our northern
"snow birds". We have missed you and we are glad to see you again. A special
welcome to all the snowbirds being with us for their first winter, or perhaps for
the first time worshipping with us; we are glad you are here.
The readings for our Mass today remind us of the end times and of our judgment. We can be confident
that, because of Baptism, we are part of the elect. Still, you and I must make a choice. Everything depends
upon it. Daniel says that "some shall live forever," but "others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace." It
is hard for us to imagine that so much depends upon our choice. A few years back Princess Anne of England
visited the Smithsonian Museum. As part of her tour, Astronaut Neil Armstrong showed her a spacesuit used
for the moon landing. She touched the material and then asked if there was danger of a rip. Armstrong calmly
replied, "The difference between life and death is about a hundredth inch of rubber." Small things can have
enormous consequences. So it is with the choices you and I make each day. They might appear small, but
deep down we know they are not trivial: they involve the difference between life and
death of one's soul. Every moral choice molds a person's character, their inmost being.
The choices that you make today are serious. You know, it is so easy for us to
fall into the "Seinfeld Syndrome." When someone asked Jerry Seinfeld what his
television show was about, he said, "nothing in particular." We can start thinking our
lives are about nothing in particular. What a lie! Daniel tells us the truth. One day you
and I will either "shine brightly" or become an "everlasting horror." It depends on the
choice we make today.
At any moment you and I can turn toward God or turn away from him. That state of flux will not last
forever. Jesus warns us there will come a final day, a final moment. Early Christian writers compared our
present life to the moist clay on a potter's wheel. While still wet and pliable, the potter can form the clay into
almost any shape. But when he places the clay in the fire, it retains that shape forever. The fire is death. At
the moment of death we will either humbly face God or self-righteously turn away from him forever. The
choice is stark. But we are not completely alone. Jesus wishes to help us. He gives us his Word and his
Grace through the Sacraments. More than we desire it ourselves, he wants us to be part of his elect.
On behalf of myself and the staff, I wish you heartfelt joy and peace during the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday.
Praised Be Jesus Christ!

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES
"It's going to get worse before it gets better" is a phrase
that prepares us to buckle up for a rough ride. We know
that enduring a difficult time will require some strenuous
physical or emotional energy on our part before we experi-
ence the calm of normality. Our past experience tells us
that we can endure the difficult pressure better when we
know how long it will last and if we know that something
better awaits us. Getting through the tough times while
holding to the promise that
awaits us is the message
of this weekend's readings.
They point toward the
promises of God's kingdom
that will come after the
maelstroms and chaos of
this world.
First Reading -- One like a Son of man re-
ceived dominion, glory, and kingship
(Daniel 7:13-14).
Psalm -- The Lord is king; he is robed in maj-
esty (Psalm 93).
Second Reading -- Jesus Christ is the faith-
ful witness, the firstborn of the dead
(Revelation 1:5-8).
Gospel -- For this I came into the world, to
testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37).
Do I treat everyone equally and
with dignity as Jesus has taught?
Let us journey together, as we look ahead,
under Christ's leadership.

Feast Day: November 21
On this Feast Day we remember
and rejoice in the Blessed Virgin
M a r y ' s c o n s e c r a t i o n t o
God. Scripture is silent on the
subject, but tradition tells us that
Mary's parents, Joachim and Ann,
brought her to the Temple and
presented her to the Lord. Whether or not the story is
historically accurate is less important than the truth it
illustrates: "From the beginning of [Mary's] life, she was
dedicated to God. She herself became a greater temple
than any made by hands. God came to dwell in her in a
marvelous manner and sanctified her for her unique role in
God's saving work
." St. Augustine reminds us, "The
blessed Mary certainly did the Father's will, and so it was
for her a greater thing to have been Christ's disciple than
to have been his mother, and she was more blessed in her
discipleship than in her motherhood
." By offering her
whole self, Mary became the complete disciple, the perfect
steward. The U.S. bishops say, "After Jesus, it is the
Blessed Virgin Mary who by her example most perfectly
teaches the meaning of discipleship and stewardship in
their fullest sense
."
There are few verifiable facts about the
life of St. Cecilia. Legend says that she
was a young Christian woman who
converted her husband, Valerian, and
his brother, Tiburius, both of whom
were martyred for their faith. It was a dangerous time to be
a Christian, and St. Cecilia, too, was put to death. It may
be that this early martyr was a musician. Images of St.
Cecilia often include a viola or small organ, and she has
been acclaimed as the patron saint of sacred music and
musicians since the fifteenth century. In the Office of
Readings for this day, St. Augustine urges, "Let us sing a
new song not with our lips but with our lives... Every one of
us tries to discover how to sing to God
." How do I "sing to
God"? What gifts and talents do I have to offer to the
Lord? Are gratitude and good stewardship the testimony,
not only of my lips, but also of my life?

seller. Certainly a steward saint who
used his gifts for the good of the
Church, St. Columban was born in
Ireland in the sixth century and entered
the monastery at Bangor. There he
was educated in the classics and theology and lived as a
monk for many years. When he was 45, he and 12
companions went to Gaul as missionaries. Europe had
been ravaged by the barbarians and needed to be re-
evangelized. St. Columban and his companions lived a
rigorously disciplined life and won renown for their
preaching and their commitment to religious life. But
some bishops complained to the pope that St. Columban
was "too Irish," and he was deported. He found favor
with the king of Lombardy and continued his work in
Italy, founding a monastery at Bobbio where he
eventually died. A good steward of the faith, St.
Columban's zealous evangelism left its mark on Christian
Europe. When we use our talents in God's service, we
can make a difference in our world, too.

All we Irish dwelling on the edge of the world are disciples of Saints Peter and Paul and of the disciples who, under
the
Holy Spirit
, wrote the Sacred Canon. We accept nothing outside this evangelical and apostolic teaching. There
was no
heretic
, no Jew, no
schismatic
, but the Catholic Faith, as first delivered to us by you, the successor of the
apostles, is kept unshaken.... We, indeed, are, as I have said, chained to the Chair of Saint Peter; for although Rome is
great and known afar, it is great and honored with us only by this Chair.
