My Dear Friends in Christ,
As a reminder we are having a second collection for the Holy Spirit Fathers today. This is the
community in which Fr. Prakash belongs, which the Diocese has assigned to us for our Mission
Appeal this year. I would hope that you are as generous as possible to this collection, for as we
experience the generosity of God living in this country we must share with those who are in need,
our brothers and sisters in Christ. As you are aware, through the missionary activity of this community, we are
blessed with an associate pastor. If we did not have the generosity of this religious order, St. Patrick would be
without an associate. As Catholic Americans in the past missioned in these foreign lands, it is fitting that we
now bear the fruit of their labor.
Generosity from each, according to the capabilities of each, is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Whether one, like
the widow, has a mere mite, or whether, like the Pharisees, perhaps much more, all should give not from their
excess but from their want. Generosity is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first
fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: "charity,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness,
modesty, self-control, chastity." (Galations 5:22-23) (CCC 1832)
St. Paul's letter to the Philippians speaks of the generosity of the Christian community which should serve
as an example for unbelievers. Those who are generous are laying up treasure in heaven.
It was kind of you to want to share in my hardships... Even when I was at Thessalonica you sent
something for my needs, not once, but twice. It is not that I am eager for the gift; rather, my
concern is for the ever-growing balance in your account... My God will supply your needs fully,
in a way worthy of his magnificent riches in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4: 14, 16, 17,19.)
It is not money that people have difficulty in giving today. It is loving and unconditional acceptance for
every human life that is wanting. Openness of married couples to new life by the shunning of artificial
methods of birth regulation, loving and respectful acceptance for all pregnant women and mothers, financial
assistance to women and children, furthering the cause of life by working to elect leaders who are friendly to
life; all of these and more are the ways that we can be generous in an age of unprecedented stinginess with
regard to human life. Let us be unambiguously pro-life in the midst of a culture of death.
Praised be Jesus Christ!

GIVING ALL
Trusting widows play a significant role in this week-
end's readings. At the point of poverty, when giving even
the smallest amount of what they had could imperil their
health and well-being, they trusted God and gave anyway.
What is important about their giving is not what or how
much they gave, but how they gave it. Without selfishness,
they gave to help others. Their giving was from the heart,
with little hope or intention of receiving any sort of reward
or recognition for their generosity. The monetary values of
the widows' gifts were small, but their
value measured in the Kingdom was
priceless.
There is a significant similarity
between their gift and the gift Jesus
gave each of us. The widows offered
their lives for God. Jesus offered his
life for us.
First Reading -- Those who lead the many to
justice shall be like the stars forever
(Daniel 12:1-3).
Psalm -- You are my inheritance, O Lord!
(Psalm 16).
Second Reading -- Where there is forgive-
ness, there is no longer offering for sin
(Hebrews 10:11-14, 18).
Gospel -- Heaven and earth will pass away,
but my words will not pass away (Mark
13:24-32).
Is there an organization or institution
I admire for being a sign of justice
and compassion in our world?
Do I affirm and support
the work its people are doing?

Have you ever had the terrifying experience of being robbed? Perhaps your house was broken into while you
were away? Your car was vandalized while parked in your driveway?
The reaction of victims of such horrific experiences often equate the tragedy as equivalent to being
personally assaulted and violated, followed by sleepless nights. Here is your opportunity to learn
ways and means of preventing such devastating experiences, and if they should occur.... what to do!
Join us at Msgr. McCall Hall on November 13th from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM and learn more. Avoid being a
victim of identity theft. How a cell phone can save your life. What targets you as a victim and much more!
This presentation is given by former police officers. Call Fiore or Virginia Bronga for more info at 596-5392.
Our GriefShare sessions continue this week on Monday nights at 6:00 PM in the Reli-

the loss of a loved one, please consider coming to our gatherings and be with those
who understand. GriefShare is a 12 week Christian based bereavement group. As
many people have found out, this road is not one to be traveled alone. If you have

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917)
Patron Saint of Emigrants
Feast Day: November 13
Born in Italy, St. Francis Xavier Cabrini never
dreamed that she would be the first
(naturalized) citizen of the United States to be
canonized. In fact, almost nothing in her life
turned out as planned. The order she had
hoped to enter denied her admission. The bishop closed the
orphanage she worked in, but named her the first prioress of
the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She wanted to
go to China, but the Pope encouraged her to go to New York
to work with Italian immigrants instead. When she arrived,
the house she intended to turn into an orphanage was
unavailable and the Archbishop of New York suggested that
she return to Italy. Undaunted, she not only stayed, she
founded a total of 67 institutions dedicated to the care of the
poor, the abandoned, the uneducated, and the sick. Pope
Pius XII said of her, "She never let anything turn her aside
from striving and aiming to please God and to work for his
glory for which nothing, aided by God's grace, seemed too
laborious, or difficult, or beyond human strength." St.
Frances Cabrini, pray for us when we are tempted to let
obstacles keep us from using our gifts for others.
St. Albert the Great was born in Bavaria and
studied in Padua before entering the
Dominican order in 1222 or 1223. He was a
man of wide interests and curiosity revered as the patron
saint of both philosophers and scientists and called "the
Universal Doctor" because of the brilliance and scope of his
learning. He wrote much about Scripture, theology, and the
natural sciences, but it is for philosophy for shifting the
emphasis from Augustine and Plato to Aristotle and for
being the teacher of St. Thomas Aquinas that he is best
remembered. He also had a great devotion to the Eucharist
and wrote fervently of the Sacred Heart and the Blessed
Virgin Mary. This extraordinary mix of scholarship and
devotion is the gift of this steward saint which we celebrate
in the opening prayer for today: "God, our Father, you
endowed St. Albert with the talent of combining human
wisdom with divine faith. Keep us true to his teachings so
that the advance of human knowledge may deepen our
knowledge and love of you."

We celebrate the dedication of the two great Roman churches the basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, under which lies
the tomb of the Apostle, and the basilica of St. Paul. "On the commemoration of all the saints it is right for us to rejoice
in this heavenly band, fashioned by God as models of patience and a support for our faith; but we must glory and exult
even more in the eminence of these two forebears, whom the grace of God raised to so high a summit
among all the members of the Church, and established like two eyes that bring light to the body whose
head is Christ." St. Peter and St. Paul, the plain-spoken fisherman who became the Rock upon whom
Christ built his Church and the zealous persecutor of Christians who became the epistle writing Apostle
to the Gentiles very different men with very different gifts, followed and loved the same Lord. It is
fitting that they should be remembered together today in the city where both found martyrdom. Please,
Lord, use us, too, and the gifts you have given us, to build up the Church in our own place and time.
