31ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
What a wonderful job all the Junior High Youth and their parents did for that delicious
breakfast last weekend. We thank all who came out to support the youth of St. Patrick. It was a great
time for food and fellowship as well as for parishioners to get to know our young who served so well.
Last week, I also discovered that I have an automatic daylight-saving-time alarm clock. The Government failed to
tell it that they pushed it to this weekend. Therefore, when I woke up last Sunday at 6 a.m. for the 7:30 a.m. Mass
(for which I was scheduled), it was really 7 a.m. So I am grateful for all the concern the parishioners expressed
when I could not be contacted (as I was in the shower). I am also grateful that Fr. Prakash is back and
was able to stand in for me!
Now for this Sunday's Word ...
Zacchaeus is filled with remorse for his sins, so much so that he promises publicly, before
Jesus and other witnesses, to perform reparations for his crimes. What moves Zacchaeus to this
sincere contrition for his sins and the vow to change his life, even to a willingness to endanger
his livelihood? How does he find within himself such superhuman generosity? He has
encountered the transforming supernatural power of Divine Love. Conversion has a social
component because it is a rejection of sin and its social consequences.
Sorrow for sin is always required when celebrating the sacrament of Confession in order that the penitent may
indeed receive the graces of the sacrament. As well, one's sorrow and experience of God's healing love can and
should move one to repair damage or replace what is taken away from others by one's sins. Reparation, as seen in
the example of Zacchaeus, may under certain circumstances be a duty for the penitent.
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation reconciles the repentant sinner both with God and with the
communio, or community, of the Church.
Zacchaeus was converted from an attraction to evil by his attraction to the love of Christ and a desire to share in it.
Praised Be Jesus Christ! ~
Fr. Pecchie
JMJ
"Every offense committed against justice and truth entails the duty of reparation, even if its author has been
forgiven. When it is impossible publicly to make reparation for a wrong, it must be made secretly. If someone who
has suffered harm cannot be directly compensated, he must be given moral satisfaction in the name of charity.
This duty of reparation also concerns offenses against another's reputation. This reparation, moral and sometimes
material, must be evaluated in terms of the extent of the damage inflicted. It obliges in conscience. (CCC 2487)
"During his public life, Jesus not only forgave sins, but also made plain the effect of this forgiveness: he rein-
tegrated forgiven sinners into the community of the People of God from which sin had alienated or even excluded
them. A remarkable sign of this is the fact that Jesus receives sinners at his table, a gesture that expresses in an
astonishing way both God's forgiveness and the return to the bosom of the People of God. (Cf. Lk 15;
19:9.)" (CCC 1443)
"God is infinitely good and all his works are good. Yet no one can escape the experience
of suffering or the evils in nature which seem to be linked to the limitations proper to crea-
tures: and above all to the question of moral evil. Where does evil come from? `I sought
whence evil comes and there was no solution,' said St. Augustine, (St. Augustine, Confessions
7,711:PL 32,739.) and his own painful quest would only be resolved by his conversion to the
living God. For `the mystery of lawlessness' is clarified only in the light of the `mystery of
our religion.' (2 Thess 2:7; 1 Tim 3:16.) The revelation of divine love in Christ manifested at
the same time the extent of evil and the superabundance of grace. (Cf. Rom 5:20.) We must
therefore approach the question of the origin of evil by fixing the eyes of our faith on him who
alone is its conqueror. (Cf. Lk 11:21-22; Jn 16:11; 1 Jn 3:8.) (CCC 385)
"Conversion is accomplished in daily life by gestures of reconciliation, concern for the
poor, the exercise and defense of justice and right, (Cf. Am 5:24; Isa 1:17) by the admission of
one's faults to one's brethren, fraternal correction, revision of life, examination of conscience, spiritual direction,
acceptance of suffering, endurance of persecution for the sake of righteousness. Taking up one's cross each day
and following Jesus is the surest way of penance.
(Cf. Lk 9:23)" (CCC 1439)
Sorrow for sins, always necessary for receiving the grace of God's forgiveness, should always accompany
one's works of reparation for sin. "The movement of return to God, called conversion and repentance, entails sor-
row for and abhorrence of sins committed, and the firm purpose of sinning no more in the future. Conversion
touches the past and the future and is nourished by hope in God's mercy. (CCC 1490)
First Reading
-- The King of the world will
raise us up to live again forever (2
Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14).
Psalm
-- Lord, when your glory appears,
my joy will be full (Psalm 17).
Second Reading
-- May our Lord Jesus
Christ and God our Father encourage and
strengthen your hearts in every good deed
and word (2 Thessalonians 2:16 -- 3:5).
Gospel
-- Those who are deemed worthy of
the coming age can no longer die (Luke
20:27-38 [27, 34-38]).
How am I living my life on earth? Do I think
about the hereafter and that in death my life
will be "changed", not ended. How will I be
remembered by others, by God?
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
GOD IS WITH US
The Book of Wisdom tells us that the
spirit of God is in all things. What a
wonderful thought, and what a wonderful
image to keep in front of us as we travel
down life's road. For if the path is revealed
in the treading, it's good to know that God
is with us--and all around us--every step of the way.
But Paul knows that this divine presence is not timid. Instead,
God calls out to us, and Paul prays that we, along with the
Thessalonians, might be made
worthy of that call. And who
knows more about God's call than
Zacchaeus, the tax collector?
Jesus called him out of a tree, for
goodness' sake. Or perhaps more
correctly, as we reflect upon the
end of today's Gospel reading, for
heaven's sake.

foot of the crucifix in Church. The names of your loved ones who have died
will be remembered at Holy Mass throughout the month of November. If you
would like us to include the names of your loved ones, please submit them on your
Remembrance envelopes, and we will add them to our book.
The scroll lists the names of those who have died from St. Patrick

Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

The Pastoral Council is a community of servant
leaders whose purpose is to assist the pastor in
discerning, through prayer and study, how the
parish can best carry out the mission of the
Church. Pastoral councils are called to model the
unity of the Body of Christ. Councils should be
representative of the diversity of the parish
community, yet united in carrying out the one
mission of the Church.

John Lateran is the name
of a church in Rome, not
a saint. The church was built about 325 on land originally
given by the wealthy Lateran family to the emperor
Constantine. Through the years, the church has suffered
the ravages of war, fire, and earthquake and has been
restored and rebuilt many times. But it is, "... in a sense,
the parish church of all Catholics, for it is the pope's
parish, the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome."
It
reminds us that we are members, not just of a parish, but
also of a Local (or diocesan) Church, and through that
Local Church, of the Universal Church; and it calls us to
stewardship that transcends parochial boundaries. The
U.S. Bishops' Pastoral on stewardship says: "The spirit
and practice of stewardship should extend to other local
churches and to the Universal Church ... and be expressed
in deeds of service and mutual support. For some this will
mean direct personal participation in evangelization and
mission work, for others generous giving to the collections
established for these purposes and other worthy
programs
."
Let us remember, in prayer and love, our Sister parish
St. Francis of Assisi Church in Gotera, El Salvador
especially, as we near Thanksgiving.
May God bless their priests, sisters, lay catechists and
all their families with his mercy and love,
and may we be truly thankful for our many blessings.
