PENTECOST SUNDAY
My Dear Friends in Christ,

As we prepare to celebrate today, this great feast of
Pentecost, we received a preview last Sunday at the Mass in the
African Tradition. What a wondrous celebration in the worship and
praise of God. I want to thank Sr. Rosamunda and Sr. Kathleen for all
they did to make the celebration a success. Besides our parishioners,
we had many visitors to St. Patrick, from throughout the diocese as well as many neighbors from
Rainbow Village, who worshipped with us for the first time. Let us pray that we can make this an annual
occurrence. Many religious sisters from Africa who serve our diocese and the Diocese of Orlando joined
us as well.
Through Divine Providence we had Fr. Andrew from Cameroon share with us his Bishop's,
Emmanuel Bushu, vision for the diocese. Today, we take up a second collection for this missionary
appeal. I ask that you be as generous as you are able. As Fr. Andrew reminded us, God has blessed our
country. We must share our blessings with those less fortunate.
This week we come to the end of another successful school year. We wish all our school families,
faculty and staff a safe and relaxing summer, and we look forward to seeing you, our parish families,
each Sunday at Church, and our neighboring parish families in August.
You may have seen the headlines proclaiming that abstinence education does not work. According to
some studies, abstinence education did little to help young people delay sexual activity until marriage. If
these studies are accurate, it is of course a disappointment. However, there was something that the media
did not widely report. These same studies, which indicated that abstinence education doesn't work, also
showed that "sex education" does not work. Although sex education teaches children all
the methods of contraception, it does not reduce the rates of teen pregnancy and sexually
transmitted diseases. The natural question is: If neither abstinence education nor sex
education works, what does work? Is there anything we can do to help our young people
and to protect them from harmful activities?
Well, there is some good news. The studies show that two factors can protect our young people
against destructive behaviors. The two biggest protective factors are parental involvement and religious
practice. I know that a lot of parents might not believe this, but children, in general, strive to live up to
parental expectations especially if their parents are involved in their lives: That is, if parents know
where their children are, who they are with and what they are doing. Children want to honor their
parents. I have had gang members break down and cry in front of me. Why? Because they realize they
brought shame to their parents. All of us want to honor our parents even if we know our parents are not
perfect. The greatest thing that parents, and other adults, can do is to be involved in the lives of young
people.
Now, I know that I have often failed in this regard. The best thing we can do is accompany our
young people be with them. Jesus tells us he will ask the Father to send the Advocate ... who will be
with us always. The Greek word for Advocate is Paraclete. It means someone who is called beside
another, an attorney. We need someone next to us. Before the Church had the New Testament, she had
the Holy Spirit, the Advocate.
I read the Bible every day and I hope you do too. But the Bible is kind of like the user's manual you
get when you buy a car. If something goes wrong, I
don't always pull out the manual; I ask someone for
help. The Holy Spirit is like that. He shows us how
to keep on the road and what to do when something
breaks down. The Holy Spirit guides by way of the
Church which Jesus founded. He is always with us.
And he invites us in turn to accompany our young
people and others who need his guidance.
Come Holy Spirit, Come,
Fr. Pecchie

THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The church wakes up to an amazing
message this morning. Look around and
see who has been called. Listen to the
voices of those who proclaim Jesus is
Lord. You'll find no race of people left out;
you'll find no language on earth unfit to
proclaim the glory of God. We call
Pentecost Sunday the "birthday of the church." In many ways,
the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace
Jesus offered in today's Gospel will we really know the fullness
of the Holy Spirit.
St. Paul assures us in today's second reading that "all of us
have been given to drink of the one Spirit." When we look
around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don't.
Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one
Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as
manifestations of the same Holy Spirit?

One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard
God's Word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by
sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to
meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be.

Feast Day: May 31
Scripture Readings:
Zep 3:14-18
(or Rom 12:9-16);
Lk 1: 39-56
Today's feast celebrates
the visit of the Virgin Mary
to her cousin Elizabeth.
Pregnant
herself,
Mary
hurries to her cousin's side to help Elizabeth in the
months immediately preceding the birth of her son,
John the Baptist. It's a homey story -- one woman
helping out another at the end of her pregnancy. And
who knew then that Mary would be without help, on an
arduous journey to Bethlehem, at the same point in her
life? It's a stewardship story, too, for Mary had the time
and desire to be of service, and she gave those gifts
without reservation. She who carried the Father's
greatest gift did not think it beneath her to offer the
simple gifts of her presence and love to someone who

your spirit and always ready to use your gifts to
help each other. Amen.
