THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD
My Dear Friends in Christ,
It is hard to believe that May is almost over. Where does the time go? We
want to welcome Mother Phina, CDNK, mother superior of our Sisters of Our
Lady of Kilimanjaro. Mother arrived last Saturday, so the sisters got a special
joy this year in celebrating Mother's Day here in the USA. She will be here until
Monday. We are grateful for her presence and her willingness to share her sisters with us.
This Thursday we say good-bye to another 8th Grade from our school as they
complete their grade school education and move on to high school. We wish them all
well and pray for their future endeavors. The foundation they have received here at St.
Patrick School will aid them in their future pursuits, and for this, we are grateful.
As we prepare for our Jubilee and 50 years of service to God and our community of
Largo, we are reminded of the importance of the work that our school has been to the
mission of St. Patrick. St Patrick School was founded in 1959, only one year after the
erection of the parish. How blessed we are as a parish family to see the importance of
Catholic Education even in this very challenging time for Catholic schools.
Regarding the school, this year we experienced a need to replace the air conditioner
in the Primary School building, as well as repair the roof in the Middle School building.
What this means is that the school will fall into a deficit of $50,000.00. I am asking that those who are able to
make a donation to the school to help the Church in making up this deficit, please consider doing so. For
those who are still uncomfortable giving to the APA, this will be a great way to aid us in getting to 100%
participation by giving this tax-free gift to the School. You may send your gift directly to the school or place
it in next week's offertory in an envelope marked school support. Again thank you for your generosity and
support of the mission of St. Patrick and Catholic education.
Also I would like to announce that Joseph Blum, who is our Director of Religious Education, has accepted
the job of Parish Education Director. As the Parish Education Director, he will continue to be the Director of
Religious Education, as well as Sacramental Education Coordinator; but he will also take on some
administrative duties and teaching at the School. This is a great way to usher in our Jubilee year by having a
graduate of our school continue to work in and for the Church. Join me in welcoming Mr. Blum to this new
position and role within our parish community.
Lastly, on this Sunday, as we will celebrate the universal love of God to all people in our
Mass of the African Tradition at 5:30 pm today, rejoice and thank
God for his generosity to me. Today, I celebrate my Anniversary of
being ordained a priest in service to Jesus Christ. It was twelve
years ago today; it is hard to believe that it has been so long. I am
most grateful to all of you for your continued support and prayers.
Scripture Reflection
Those of us who follow Jesus belong to the period of the Church. Through preaching and the sacraments,
the Church strives to make Jesus present among us so that we may be empowered to bear witness to the
power of God to deliver us from the bondage of sin and despair. It is the Holy Spirit who guides and supports
us as we attempt to live the ideals of our calling and to introduce others to the salvation won for us by the
sacrifice of Jesus.
One of the principal roles of the Holy Spirit is to enable us to recognize how to live as Jesus did in
circumstances that are far removed from the situation in first century Israel. It is the role of the Spirit to tell
us then, what Jesus would do if he were living here in the twenty-first century. Such guidance will not only
give us courage and confidence, but will also enable us to understand what unselfish love means in difficult
and worrisome situations.
It is truly remarkable that the disciples in the gospel story do not grieve when Jesus leaves them. Instead,
they "returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God" (Luke
24:52-3). As we live in the Spirit and try to be sensitive to the Spirit's promptings, we too can
be filled with joy and find it fitting to express that joy with words of praise and thanksgiving.
As we do so, we will surely attract others who will want to know our secret and will thus be
ready to learn about the wonderful gift of salvation won for us by the love of Jesus.
Praise Be Jesus Christ!

First Reading
-- Filled with the Holy
Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in
tongues (Acts 2:1-11).
Psalm
-- Lord, send out your Spirit, and
renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104).
Second Reading
-- In one Spirit we are
baptized into one body and given to drink
of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-
13) or Romans 8:8-17.
Gospel
-- Jesus Christ appears to the
disciples and sends them on their mission
with the power to forgive or retain sins
through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23)
or John 14:15-16, 23b-26.

We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
CONTINUALLY PRAISING GOD
In both the first reading and the Gospel we are told about
Christ's glorious ascension into heaven. Paul's letter to the
Ephesians reminds us that Christ has been seated at God's right
hand in heaven, above every choir of angels. There might be a
temptation to stay at an awed distance from Jesus Christ.
However, the tone of today's readings is far from that temptation.
The tone is exultant and the message is urgent. We are to be his
witnesses, and the Gospel describes the
first witnesses this way: "With great joy . . .
they were continually in the temple praising
God" (Luke 24:53).
How can we continually praise God?
The answer can be found in the second
reading, in which Paul prays that God will
give us a "Spirit of wisdom and revelation"
in order to know Christ clearly (Ephesians
1:17). We cannot stand at a distance. We
are to be enlightened and empowered.

Patron Saint of lectors
Feast Day: May 25
The only English Doctor of the
Church, St. Bede was a
Benedictine priest and scholar.
He was a devoted student of the
Scriptures and was learned in
many other areas, too -- natural
and Aristotelian philosophy,
astronomy, grammar, Church
history, and the lives of the
saints. Considered the
outstanding ecclesiastical author of his time, he wrote
many volumes on the Church Fathers and Sacred
Scripture, and in fact had just completed the last page
of a translation of St. John's Gospel into English on the
day he died. His book, The Ecclesiastical History of the
English People, is a classic, still read almost 13
centuries later by students of the art of writing history.
"My special joy was always study, teaching, and
writing," he said. These were the intellectual gifts of
God to this great steward saint and the very gifts he
gave back, with increase, to the Church he loved.
Lord, you have enlightened your Church with the
learning of St. Bede. In your love, may we learn
from his wisdom and benefit from his prayers.
