My Dear Friends in Christ,

Today we celebrate the Ascension of the
Lord. At 2 PM, we will also celebrate at the
Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle, the sacrament of
Confirmation with our 8
th
graders and young people from
many parishes in our diocese. Please pray for our Youth
who will receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in this
sacrament. May seems to be the month of sacraments. Please pray for
our children who will be receiving their first Holy Communion this
coming Saturday, May 10
th
, at 10:30 AM here in Church. All parishioners
are welcome to join us for this special occasion in the life of our parish
for our children in the school & Religious Education program.
I would like to thank all those who responded to our Capital Campaign
Commitment Sunday. Not only do I thank you for your generosity, but I
also thank you for being part of our parish wide campaign. Your
commitment to St. Patrick is commendable. For all those who wrote or
spoke to me about your financial inability to participate at this time, I
remind you of our need for your commitment to the campaign through your prayers.
In the Gospel, we hear that Jesus ascends into heaven. Christ departs from his people on earth in order to
be powerfully present among them through the indwelling Holy Spirit, and in that Spirit, to send them
forth and increase. He leaves us a mission to evangelize all peoples. Our Holy Father Benedict in
Rome has issued a new call for all of us, as salt and light, as a leaven in the world, to witness the saving
presence of Christ in His Church by joyfully sharing the truths of the Gospel in word and action.
Christ is seated at God's right hand, from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. And how
shall we live and spread the Gospel while separated from the Lord of glory by this earthly life? By faith!
The Lord continues today to "work with" the Apostles in their
successors, the bishops, who proclaim in union with Peter, the
True Catholic Faith that comes to us from the Apostles. We reach
eternal salvation by this one orthodox faith. All of our thoughts,
words and actions should be conformed to the holy faith, should
draw life from it, and build it up.
Praised Be Jesus Christ!
Fr. Pecchie

Feast of the Ascension of our Lord

"Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that
salvation. (Cf. Mk 16:16; Jn 3:36; 6:40) Since `without faith it is impossible to please [God]' and to
attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will
anyone obtain eternal life `but he who endures to the end' (Cf. Mt 10:22; 24:13; Heb 11:6)" (CCC 161)
"God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share
in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man
to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin,
into the unity of his family, the Church." (CCC 1)
"So that this call should resound throughout the world, Christ sent forth the apostles he had chosen,
commissioning them to proclaim the gospel: `Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you
always, to the close of the age.' (Mt 28:18-20) Strengthened by this
mission, the apostles `went forth and preached everywhere, while the
Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that
attended it.' (Mk 16:20)" (CCC 2)

First Reading -- Filled with the Holy Spirit,
the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts
2:1-11).
Psalm -- Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew
the face of the earth (Psalm 104).
Second Reading -- In one Spirit we are
baptized into one body and given to drink of
one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13).
Gospel -- Jesus Christ appears to the disciples
and sends them on their mission with the
power to forgive or retain sins through the
Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23).
Thank you Holy Spirit
for the gift of peace,
the power to forgive others,
the Spirit of compassion
and the gift of love.

Sharing our Faith in Christ
SHARE THE HOPE
The readings for today's celebration of the Ascension of the
Lord once again remind us that as Christians we are people of hope.
In the second reading Saint Paul eloquently exhorts the Ephesians to
enlighten their hearts so that they will know the hope and glory that
come from being people who place their trust in the Lord Jesus. In
the story of the Ascension, recounted in the first reading, the Lord
Jesus assures the disciples that the Holy Spirit's power will come
upon them. Finally, in the Gospel, the Lord lets the disciples know
that their mission is to
spread the hope of the
gospel to all the nations.
This wonderful feast
keeps our eyes focused
on the hope in which we
were grounded on the
day of our baptism.
