My Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Lent! What an awesome experience
we had as we celebrated our Patronal Feast Day last Saturday, March 17. The
Mass was beautiful, and the choir did an outstanding job. Mark your calendars
for next year as I am sure we will have a wondrous Feast also to celebrate our 50th
Anniversary as a parish community. If anyone is interested in being on our Anniversary
committee please call the Rectory.
Next week we will be entering Holy Week: the last week of our Lenten observance. I
would strongly encourage you to mark your calendars and plan to participate in the Sacred
Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday.
"Go, and do not sin again." (Jn 8:11.)
How can we today hear these words just as the woman caught in adultery did,
so that we may walk away from the Lord cleansed, renewed, made whole again
after the tragedy and brokenness of sin? We must hear these words through the
sacraments of healing. The forgiveness of the Lord is infinite and without
conditions. The healing power of the mercy of God, fully given in Christ, can be
ours definitively and completely whenever we approach the Lord in the sacrament
of Reconciliation (Confession) and, when sick in body, also through the
sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies, who forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to
bodily health, (Cf. Mk 2:1-12) has willed that his Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing
and salvation, even among her own members. This is the purpose of the two sacraments of healing: the sacrament of
Penance and the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
(CCC 1421)
"Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against
him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by
charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion." (LG 11 art. 2)
(CCC 1422)
It is called the sacrament of forgiveness, since by the priest's sacramental absolution God grants
the penitent "pardon and peace." (OP 46: formula of absolution.) It is called the sacrament of
Reconciliation, because it imparts to the sinner the life of God who reconciles: "Be reconciled to
God." (2 Cor 5:20) He who lives by God's merciful love is ready to respond to the Lord's call:
"Go; first be reconciled to your brother." (Mt 5:24)
(CCC 1424)"
If Baptism is clearly recorded in the Gospels as the gift of God's mercy and the washing away
of all our sins, why another sacrament in order to have the forgiveness of God?
You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our
God." (1 Cor 6:11) One must appreciate the magnitude of the gift God has given us in the sacraments of Christian
initiation in order to grasp the degree to which sin is excluded for him who has "put on Christ." (Gal 3:27) But the
apostle John also says: "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." (1 Jn 1:8) And the
Lord himself taught us to pray: "Forgive us our trespasses," (Cf. Lk 11:4; Mt 6:12) linking our forgiveness of one
another's offenses to the forgiveness of our sins that God will grant us.
(CCC 1425)
Conversion to Christ, the new birth of Baptism, the gift of the Holy Spirit and the Body and Blood
of Christ received as food have made us "holy and without blemish," just as the Church herself,
the Bride of Christ, is "holy and without blemish." (Eph 1:4; 5:27) Nevertheless the new life
received in Christian initiation has not abolished the frailty and weakness of human nature, nor
the inclination to sin that tradition calls concupiscence, which remains in the baptized such that
with the help of the grace of Christ they may prove themselves in the struggle of Christian life.
(Cf. Council of Trent (1546): DS 1515.) This is the struggle of conversion directed toward
holiness and eternal life to which the Lord never ceases to call us. (Cf. Council of Trent (1547):
DS 1545; LG 40.)
(CCC 1426)
Praised Be Jesus Christ!

Gospel at the Procession with Palms --
Jesus' entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-40).
First Reading -- In spite of my sufferings I
am not disgraced. I am not put to shame
(Isaiah 50:4-7).
Psalm -- My God, my God, why have you
abandoned me? (Psalm 22).
Second Reading -- Christ emptied himself,
and God filled this emptiness with exaltation
(Philippians 2:6-11).
Gospel -- The account of Christ's passion
according to Luke (Luke 22:14 -- 23:56
[23:1-49]).
How will I spend Holy Week? Do I see God
touching me through my suffering?
This week, perhaps I could visit or help
another suffering person.

STRAIGHT LINES
"God writes straight with
crooked lines," the saying goes.
The power of Paul's testimony
that everything is junk but
knowledge of Jesus and the
power of his resurrection is a
straight enough message.
And, God knows, Paul had a
crooked journey before his blinding
insight straight from God.
Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great
works were as nothing compared to the new creation. "Can't
you see it?" we are asked, as if we are still wandering along our
crooked lines.
And there is no straighter line than that between the woman
whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is
deeper and more acute. You just can't beat this kind of good
news.
All are invited to the 2ND ANNIVERSARY MASS for TERRI
SCHINDLER SCHIAVO on Thursday, March 29th at 7 PM.

who were baptized as Catholics but have not received the
sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Inquiry

The Feast of the Annunciation, March 25, is one of the most
important in the Church calendar. It celebrates the actual
Incarnation of Our Savior, the Word made flesh, in the womb
of His mother, Mary.
The biblical account of the Annunciation is in the first
chapter of the Gospel of Saint Luke, 26-56. Saint Luke
describes the annunciation given by the angel Gabriel to Mary
that she was to become the mother of the Incarnation of God.
Here is recorded the "angelic salutation" of Gabriel to
Mary, 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee" (Ave, gratia
plena, Dominus tecum -
Lk 1:28), and Mary's response to
God's will, "Let it be done to me according to thy word" (fiat
mihi secundum verbum tuum
) (v. 38)
This "angelic salutation" is the origin of the "Hail Mary"
prayer of the
Rosary
and the
Angelus
(the second part of the
prayer comes from the words of salutation of Elizabeth to
Mary at the
Visitation
).
The
Angelus,
a devotion that daily commemorates the
Annunciation, consists of three Hail Marys separated by short
versicles. It is said three times a day -- morning, noon and
evening -- traditionally at the sound of a bell. The
Angelus
derives its name from the first word of the versicles, Angelus
Domini nuntiavit Mariae
(The Angel of the Lord declared
unto Mary).
Mary's exultant hymn, the
Magnificat
, found in Luke
1:46-55, has been part of the Church's Liturgy of the Hours, at
Vespers (evening prayer), and has been repeated nightly in
churches, convents and monasteries for more than a thousand
years.
The Church's celebration of the Annunciation is believed to date to the early 5th century, possibly originating at about the
time of the Council of Ephesus (c 431). Earlier names for the Feast were Festum Incarnationis, and Conceptio Christi, and in
the Eastern Churches, the Annunciation is a feast of Christ, but in the Latin Church it is a feast of Mary. The Annunciation
has always been celebrated on March 25, exactly nine months before Christmas Day.
Two other feasts honoring Our Lord's mother, the
Assumption
(August 15), and the
Immaculate Conception
(December
8), are celebrated as Holy Days of Obligation in the United States and many other countries. New Year's Day, January 1, is
observed as a
Solemnity of Mary
. The Annunciation was a Holy Day throughout the Universal Church until the early 20th
century. Many Catholics who are deeply concerned with the defense of the life of unborn children believe it would be fitting
if the Feast of the Annunciation were restored to this status. Although it seems unlikely that it will be added to the Church
calendar as a Holy Day of Obligation, we can certainly take on the "obligation" ourselves to attend Mass. In any case, it is
most appropriate that we encourage special celebrations in the "Domestic Church".
One sign of the significance this Christian feast had throughout Western culture is that New Year's Day was for centuries
celebrated on March 25. It was believed by some ancient Christian writers that God created the world on March 25, and that
the fall of Adam and the Crucifixion also took place March 25. The secular calendar was changed to begin the year on
January 1 (in 1752 in England and colonies, somewhat earlier on the continent).
Another remnant of the historic universality of Christianity in the West is the use of BC (before Christ) and AD (Anno
Domini
The Year of Our Lord) to denote periods of time in history. There has been an attempt in some circles to change BC
to BCE (before the common era), and AD to CE (common era) -- and although it is true that the religious significance of our
system of dating has been effectively obliterated -- nevertheless, Christians and non-Christians alike consent to the birth of
Christ as the "fulcrum" of the dating the events of human history.
