My Dear Friends in Christ,
Alleluia! Christ is risen! This day is the Sunday of Sundays. On this and
every Sunday we identify ourselves as members of the one Body of the risen
Lord, the Church, by worshipping as one people in the Eucharistic sacrifice.
An ancient legend illustrates the power of Christ's death and resurrection. It tells
about a monk who discovered the crown of thorns that had been pressed on Jesus'
head. Covered with blood, it was a horrible sight. The monk took it with care and
placed it on the side altar of a church. The people glanced at it, and then turned away. It reminded them of the
ugliness and cruelty of sin, their own sins. The crown of thorns remained there until Easter morning, when the
monk, with sunrise, made his way into the church. He thought that the bloody reminder of Christ's
passion would be out of place and that he should remove it. As he approached the altar, he detected a
strange fragrance. The sun was so bright that at first he could not tell what had happened. The
sun had centered its rays on the sharp thorns. From them emerged roses of rare beauty and a most
pleasing fragrance.
That little story captures something of the transformation of Easter. As we heard in this morning's
readings, Jesus' resurrection changes the shame of sin into forgiveness, the paralysis of despair into hope.
The early Christians called this day "the Day of the Sun" as did everyone else in the Roman Empire. What they
meant by that was much more than could be said for the typical Roman, for whom the day marked merely one more
rising and setting of the fiery orb that coursed through the skies. For the Christian, this was the day on which the
"rising of the Sun" reminded them of the glorious rising of the "Son" of God.
If Christ is to be our light, if we are to share one day in the new dawn of His Resurrection, we must begin now
to learn to celebrate the Lord's Day in a worthy way, and according to the ancient discipline of the Christian
communio, or communion, and the law of Christ.
In the Eucharistic Sacrifice we offer the perfect prayer of Christ, the perfect means of keeping the Lord's Day
holy. Our indifference to the Mass condemns us as indifferent to Christ Himself. Worship with the Christian
communio is not an option among options. It expresses and makes present the core reality of our identity as
Christians. Without the Lord, as he manifests Himself in Word and Sacrament, it is impossible for us to look
forward to heaven and eternal joy. "Without me," he warns, "you can do nothing."
A fourth century Christian said it better than I could. I would like to conclude with a quote from the Easter
sermon of St. John Chrysostom:
Are there any weary with fasting?
Let them now receive their wages!
If any have toiled from the first hour,
let them receive their due reward;
If any have come after the third hour,
let him with gratitude join in the Feast!
And he that arrived after the sixth hour,
let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss.
And if any delayed until the ninth hour,
let him not hesitate; but let him come too.
And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour,
let him not be afraid by reason of his delay.
For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first.
He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour,
as well as to him that toiled from the first.
To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows.
He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor.
The deed He honors and the intention He commends.
Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord!
First and last alike receive your reward;
rich and poor, rejoice together!
Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!
You that have kept the fast, and you that have not,
rejoice today for the Table is richly laden.
Praised Be Jesus Christ! ~

First Reading -- All who believed were
devoted to the teachings of the apostles, the
communal life, the breaking of the bread, and
prayer (Acts 2:42-47).
Psalm -- Give thanks to the Lord for he is
good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118).
Second Reading -- God has given us an
undiminished inheritance, safeguarded for us
in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-9).
Gospel -- The risen Christ comes to his
disciples with peace and the Spirit. The absent
Thomas doubts (John 20:19-31).
Do I ever find myself
acting as Thomas did?
What will I do to encourage
others who do not believe?

REJOICE AND BE GLAD
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be
glad!" (Psalm 118:24) Let us remember that these words of today's
responsorial psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those
gathered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios
throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those
denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their
voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by
people who have lost loved
ones to acts of terrorism and
war around the globe. Even in
the midst of conflict and
division, Christians still come
together to declare that
poverty, loneliness, violence,
and division will never, ever
have as much power as the
life, death, and resurrection of
Jesus Christ. Indeed, let us

e warmly welcome ... In the Sacraments of Initiation we are freed from the power of
darkness and joined to Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. We receive the Spirit of
filial adoption and are part of the entire people of God in the celebration of the Lord's death
and resurrection. At the Easter Vigil, we were pleased to welcome into our Church family two
people who have received the three sacraments of initiation: Christina Burrell and Evelyn Ouegroago, and
two children who received Baptism: John Ouegroago and Romeo Greene. We are also pleased to
welcome into full communion with the Church those candidates who received the Sacraments of Eucharist
and Confirmation: Richard Eckley , David Fechter , Wilson Greene , Lori Kinstle, Jennifer Ross and
Felecia Saywon. Congratulations to all of you!
May your lives be richly blessed and strengthened by the grace of Christ. Our Catholic Community of St.
Patrick welcomes you and offers to you our love and support as you continue on your journey in faith.
Next Sunday, March 30th, is the 2nd Sunday of Easter. Pope John
Paul the Great designated this Feast Day as DIVINE MERCY
SUNDAY in the Church. In honour of this Feast, we will be praying
the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at each Mass next weekend. Please
join us in prayer as we pray for ourselves, for our community, for
our Church and for our world.
