3RD SUNDAY OF LENT
Fr. Paul Pecchie

My Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Lent. Again one of the
principle aspects of Lent is Almsgiving! Remember we are looking for
100% participation in our APA (Annual Pastoral Appeal) this year! So
far 106 families have responded and I personally want to thank those who have
prayerfully considered this appeal and made a pledge. As we have been reading
in the local paper and the Florida Catholic, the plight of the homeless in Pinellas
is quite the challenge. The Diocese of St. Petersburg's assistance with local and
state government can only come about through the generosity of parishioners who support this appeal.
Without the APA the diocese would not have the ability to make any difference in this tragic situation.
The monies for APA are used specifically for the running of the diocese and the needs of her people.
They are not monies earmarked for any one individual.
On a more challenging note, most of you who are registered should have received my stewardship
letter in the mail. Just to keep you up to date on the continuing financial challenge for the parish; we
still owe the diocese $49,000.00 from 2006 APA since we did not meet our goal last
year. Hence the reason for the first paragraph regarding this year's APA. Also, we
will owe $50,000.00 to the school for the parish subsidy. The past offertory
collections averaging $12,000.00 per week will not enable us to meet these financial
responsibilities. I am asking ALL parishioners to pray for this situation and those who
are able, to be as generous as possible so we can meet this current financial obstacle.
Scripture Reflection
When disaster befalls us and lives are lost in storms, fires and floods, some wonder if they have
been punished more than others as somehow more deserving of God's wrath. People reacted in much
the same way as in the Lord's day. A wall had fallen on some workers in Siloam, which some took as
God's punishment for those who had sinned more than others. "...Do you think that they were worse
offenders than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, No; but unless you repent you will all
likewise perish."
(Lk 13. 4-5)
"He tells us that, without Holy Baptism, no one will enter the kingdom of heaven (cf. Jn 3:5); and,
elsewhere, that if we do not repent we will all perish (Lk 13:3). This is all easily understood. Ever since
man sinned, all his senses rebel against reason; therefore, if we want the flesh to be controlled by the
spirit and by reason, it must be mortified; if we do not want the body to be at war with the soul, it and all
our senses need to be chastened; if we desire to go to God, the soul with all its faculties needs to be
mortified"
(St. John Mary Vianney, Selected Sermons, Ash Wednesday).
Repentance in the heart leads to confession with the lips. The Lord commands us to mourn for our
sins and, with contrition, to embrace a firm amendment to avoid the near occasions of sin in the future.
This contrition is not something added to the Gospel as an option but is of necessity if we are to love
God and receive the gift of salvation. The disposition of contrition is required of us, therefore, when
receiving the sacramental gift of divine forgiveness in Confession.
Among the penitent's acts, contrition occupies first place. Contrition is "sorrow of the soul and
detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again."
(CCC 1451)
When it arises from a love by which God is loved above all else, contrition is
called "perfect" (contrition of charity). Such contrition remits venial sins; it
also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it includes the firm resolution to have
recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible. (Cf. Council of Trent
(1551): DS 1676.) (CCC 1453)
Praise Be Jesus Christ!

First Reading -- The Israelites ate of the
yield of the land of Canaan (Joshua 5:9a,
10-12) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a.
Psalm -- Taste and see the goodness of the
Lord (Psalm 34) or Psalm 23.
Second Reading -- Whoever is in Christ
is a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17-21) or
Ephesians 5:8-14.
Gospel -- This man welcomes sinners and
eats with them (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) or
John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38].
Is there someone I need to be reconciled
with? How is my relationship with our
generous and loving God?
Lent is the perfect opportunity to being anew.

"I AM"
Kindness and mercy are what the enslaved people of Israel
Israel needed, and they came in the form of deliverance. They
came through a leader, Moses, who was once plucked from
the Nile River and was now herding his father-in-law's sheep in
the land of Goshen. The bush that burned but was not
consumed shows us that God is inexhaustible mystery.
Moses' awe and deference are mixed with a touching
conversational tone as he seeks to learn God's name. And
God sweetly responds. The somewhat abstract "I AM"
distinguishes the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob from
the minor gods in the
territory who "are not." They
are helpless, powerless,
and useless. Moses is to
step out into an amazing
future, and God will be
there with outstretched arm.
Just go and see, God
seems to say.

Kidnapped from British
mainland around age 16,
Patrick was shipped to
Ireland as a slave. He
was sent to the mountains
to tend the sheep of his
master, and there he
spent his time in prayer.
After six years of this life,
he received a dream in which he was commanded to
return to Britain. Seeing it as a sign, Patrick es-
caped.
In the years that followed, Patrick studied in con-
tinental monasteries and became a priest. He had
another dream in which the people of Ireland were
calling out to him, "We beg you, holy youth, to come
and walk among us once more."
Patrick was ordained a bishop, and was sent to
take the Gospel to Ireland. He arrived in Ireland
March 25, 433, at Slane. One legend says that he
met a chieftain of one of the tribes, who tried to kill
Patrick. Patrick converted Dichu (the chieftain) after
he was unable to move his arm until he became
friendly to Patrick.
Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout
Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples
preached and converted thousands and began build-
ing churches all over the country. Kings, their fami-
lies, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity
when hearing Patrick's message. Patrick by now
had many disciples, many who were later canonized
as well.
Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for
40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of
his love for God in Confessio. After years of living in
poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering, he
died March 17, 461 in County Down, Ireland.

and His Mother
." We invite the entire
community to join us. If you have questions, please

I came to the Irish people to preach the Gospel
and endure the taunts of unbelievers,
putting up with reproaches about my earthly pilgrimage,
suffering many persecutions, even bondage,
and losing my birthright of freedom
for the benefit of others.
from the Confession of Saint Patrick
Why a shamrock?
Patrick used the
shamrock to explain the
Trinity, and it has been
associated with him and
the Irish since that time.
St. Patrick and the Easter Fire
The High King of Ireland lived in Tara with his
court and the Druids. On the day before Easter Sun-
day, he ordered that all fires were to be put out until
he would light the great fire to honor the pagan gods.
From his fire, all other fires would be lit.
On the same day, St. Patrick arrived at Slane,
across from Tara, and went up the hill at the other
side of the valley. St. Patrick lit the Paschal fire to
celebrate Easter and remember that Jesus had risen
from the dead. The Druids were very annoyed and
said to the King, "Unless this fire is put out tonight it
will never be put out in this land." Many efforts were
made to put out St. Patrick's fire, but it could not be
extinguished. The next day Patrick arrived before the
High King at Tara, and eventually, the king gave per-
mission for Patrick to preach the Gospel and teach
the Faith. To this day, the fire of Christianity, still
burns in Ireland.
