2ND SUNDAY OF LENT
Fr. Paul Pecchie
ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH
(727) 584-2318 Tel.
Fr. Prakash Madanu, ALCP.
2121 - 16th Avenue SW, Largo, FL 33770
(727) 586-5413 Fax.
My Dear Friends in Christ,
We begin our second Sunday of Lent renewed and strengthened after the
challenge of our parish mission. We thank Fr. Angelus for sharing with us the power
of God's love and the need for our conversion. As a parish community we have been
blessed by Fr. Angelus' presence among us. All who attended the mission this past week I am
sure will agree.
A question was raised recently by several parishioners asking why the Latin responses during Lent. First, it
must be remembered that Latin is the official language of the Church, and Pope Benedict XVI desires that all
Catholics should know the basic responses to the Mass in Latin. Second, it can be seen as a sign of fasting. For
those who long to sing again in English, it is a reminder that our longing for God should be even greater than the
longing for singing in English.
This past Sunday as a parish we sent three Catechumens and five Candidates down to the
Bishop for the Rite of Election. At the ceremony the Bishop accepts their desire to become
Catholic and calls them to the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. I
would ask that you pray in a special way for these men, women and child as they prepare for the
Easter Vigil to be united with us at the Altar of the Lord.
Gospel Reflection
We savor in the Lord's Transfiguration a foretaste of the heavenly
glory which awaits the faithful. Our bodies will share in his brightness,
"by which the bodies of the saints shall shine like the sun, according to
the words of our Lord recorded in the Gospel of St. Matthew: `The
righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father' (Mt
13:43). To remove the possibility of doubt on the subject, he exemplifies
this in his Transfiguration. This quality the Apostle sometimes calls
glory, sometimes brightness: `He will change our lowly body to be like
his glorious body' (Phil 3:21); and again, `It is sown in dishonor, it is
raised in glory' (1 Cor 15:43). Of this glory the Israelites beheld some
image in the desert, when the face of Moses, after he had enjoyed the presence and conversation of God, shone
with such luster that they could not look on it (Ex 34:29; 2 Cor 3:7). This brightness is a sort of radiance reflected
on the body from the supreme happiness of the soul. It is participation in that bliss which the soul enjoys....This
quality is not common to all in the same degree. All the bodies of the saints will be equally impassible; but the
brightness of all will not be the same for, according to the Apostle, `There is one glory of the sun, and another
glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. So it is with the resurrection of
the dead' (1 Cor 15:4f)" (Catechism of the Council of Trent, I, 12, 13).
The Father's command "Listen to him!" means that in Christ we find the fullest revelation of the Father's glory
figured forth in the glorious Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.
Christ's whole earthly life -- his words and deeds, his silences and sufferings, indeed his manner
of being and speaking -- is Revelation of the Father. Jesus can say: "Whoever has seen me has
seen the Father," and the Father can say: "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!" (Jn 14:9;
Lk 9:35; cf. Mt 17:5; Mk 9:7 ["my beloved Son"] ).
(CCC 516)
There is no other name, or sign, given under heaven by which we may be saved.
"Therefore," according to Saint John of the Cross, "if any now should question God or desire a vision or revelation,
not only would he be acting foolishly but he would be committing an offense against God, by not fixing his gaze
on Christ with no desire for any new thing. For God could reply to him in this way: 'If I have spoken all things to
you in my Word, which is my Son, and I have no other word, what answer can I give you now, or what can I
reveal to you that is greater than this? Fix your eyes on him alone, for in him I have spoken and revealed to you all
things, and in him you will find even more than what you ask for and desire....Hear him, for I have no more faith to
reveal, nor have I any more things to declare' " (Ascent of Mount Carmel, book 2, chap. 22, 5).
Praised be Jesus Christ!

First Reading -- "I have witnessed the
affliction of my people in Egypt and
have come to rescue them" (Exodus
3:1-8a, 13-15) or Exodus 17:3-7.
Psalm -- The Lord is kind and merciful
(Psalm 103) or Psalm 95.
Second Reading -- Those who think
they are standing secure should take
care not to fall (1 Corinthians 10:1-6,
10-12) or Romans 5:1-2, 5-8.
Gospel -- I shall cultivate the ground
around the fig tree and fertilize it; it may
bear fruit in the future (Luke 13:1-9) or
John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42].
As I view my own life, is there a
complacency setting in? Is there a
relationship that needs mending with a
person I may have neglected?

WE ARE TO BE TRANSFORMED

Today's showing forth of God's glory is filled with a light
that astonishes and reveals. Jesus transfigured on Mount
Tabor energizes even the sleepy apostles, who see but cannot
get hold of it. They can be forgiven for not apprehending the
full meaning of this extraordinary vision of a transfigured Jesus
with Elijah and Moses. The whole of the Law and prophets is
summed up here on this mountain.
The transfiguration on Mount
Tabor is handed over to us this
Sunday. As Paul reminds us, it is
we who are to be transformed. The
light and life of the Resurrection are
set forth here so we do not lose
heart and fall entirely asleep. This
Sunday looks to Easter. It looks to
transformation. It asks us to lift up
our heads and acknowledge the
risen Lord as our light and our
salvation.

Saint Frances of Rome
Saint Frances of Rome
Saint Frances of Rome
Saint Frances of Rome, Widow
(1384-1440)
Feast Day: March 9
Frances was born in
Rome in 1384. Her parents, of
high rank, overruled her desire
to become a nun, and when
she reached the age of twelve,
married her to Lorenzo
Ponziano, a Roman noble.
During the forty years of their
married life they never had a
disagreement. While spending
her days in retirement and
prayer, Saint Frances attended
promptly to every household
duty, saying, "A married woman must leave God at the
altar to find Him in her domestic cares." She once found
the verse of a psalm, at which she had been four times
thus interrupted, completed for her in letters of gold. Her
ordinary food was dry bread, and secretly she would ex-
change with beggars good food for their hard crusts.
Two of her children died young. Her son was nine
years old when he foretold his father's death wound and
his own coming departure for heaven; and then he re-
turned a year later with an Angel whom she saw clearly.
He said he had come for his little five year-old sister, that
she might be placed among the Angels with him. He left
the Angel with her in exchange, to remain always.
During the invasion of Rome in 1413, Lorenzo was
banished, his estates confiscated, his house destroyed, and
his eldest son taken as a hostage. Frances saw in these
losses only the hand of God, and blessed His holy Name.
When peace was restored Ponziano recovered his estates,
and after her husband's death, Saint Frances founded a
Community of Benedictine Oblate nuns. At the age of
fifty-three, barefoot and with a cord about her neck she
asked admission to the community, and was soon elected
Superior.
She lived at all times in the presence of God, and
among many visions was given constant sight of her An-
gel, who shed such a brightness around him that the Saint
could read her midnight Office by this light alone. He
shielded her in time of temptation, and directed her in
every good act. But when she fell into some fault, he
faded from her sight, and whenever any unsuitable words
were spoken before her, he covered his face in shame.
Saint Frances died on the day she foretold, March 9, 1440.
