Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Feast of SS Peter and Paul. The Holy
Father has announced that this weekend we begin the Year of St. Paul,
as we celebrate the 2000th year since his birth. Let us reflect on these
two great saints in the history of the Church. We see in Peter the Primacy of
governance. This primacy of Peter among the other Apostles, and the continued
primacy of the pope among the bishops, is one of the major doctrinal differences
between Catholic Christians and non-Catholic Christians.
There is much more that unites the different groups of Christians than
divides us: we all believe in the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Resurrection,
the inspiration of the Bible, and many other things.
This gives us hope that we can reestablish full unity among all Christians -
one of the goals of the Jubilee Year of St. Paul.
When he announced this Jubilee Year, Pope Benedict said: "Lastly, there is
one particular aspect to which special attention must be paid during the
celebration of the various moments of the 2,000th Pauline anniversary: I am
referring to the ecumenical dimension. The Apostle to the Gentiles, who was especially committed to taking
the Good News to all peoples, left no stones unturned for unity and harmony among all Christians."
And yet, the pope has also continued to teach by word and example that real unity can only be
achieved if we also honestly face our differences.
Today's Gospel passage is especially helpful for understanding the key difference of the papacy.
Some critics twist this passage into nonsensical knots by pointing out that the Greek word for rock (Peter) is
of the feminine gender (in Greek all nouns are gender-specific).
They conclude, therefore, that Christ wasn't really applying the term to Simon (even though he changed it
into a masculine form when he made it into a name) but only to Simon's faith.
Other critics claim that Christ said these words while pointing to himself.
Such objections unnecessarily complicate a simple, straightforward text.
They also ignore the many other passages in the New Testament that illustrate Peter's
primacy among the Twelve.
For example: Christ originally renamed him "Peter" in Chapter One of John's
Gospel, when he first met him.
And renaming people in the Bible is much more than handing out nicknames; it
signifies receiving a new role in salvation history.
And then, during the Last Supper Christ prayed in a special way for Peter and gave
him a special commission to "confirm your brethren in the faith" (Luke 22:32).
Christ also gave him a unique commission after his resurrection, when he commanded
him three times to "feed my sheep" (John 21).
As well, Peter's name always appears first on the lists of the Twelve Apostles, and the only name that
appears more often in the New Testament is Christ's himself.
There is one Lord: Jesus Christ. And he founded one Church to wage his definitive war against sin and evil: that
Church's keys are in Peter's hands. Let us pray that we may see through the powerful intercession of SS Peter and
Paul that more strides will be made in bringing about a unity of all Christians that we may be one as Jesus prayed
at the Last Supper and as St. Paul worked tirelessly to bring about.
Praised be Jesus Christ,
Fr. Pecchie
PS. Today, Sunday, the members of the choir and I are in Canada. Please be assured
of my remembrance at Mass on this great day beginning the year of my patron and a
great model of a disciple of Jesus.

Sharing our Faith in Christ
PETER AND PAUL
Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a saint's day that
replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of these days, given the
official rank of "solemnity," are considered so foundational and primal
to the mission of the Church that they can interrupt the Sunday
sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul today.
In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can
identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting or speaking
thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God.
At such times, they might receive a nudge from God, much the same as
many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply
rooted in their faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call
to spread the Good News of his death and resurrection.
Perhaps we might identify more with one or the other, but
the essential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the
Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and
make the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable
human beings, each graced in a particular way for the
work of the reign of God.

Please consider spending
even one hour each Wednesday to be with Our Lord
in Eucharistic Adoration, beginning after the 8 AM Mass and concluding with Benediction at 6:45
PM. Please sign up at the Church entrance. Wednesdays in our Diocese are designated to pray for
holy vocations to the priesthood. On the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, Prayers for Priests will be held
after Benediction.
Eucharistic Adoration every Wednesday
This day the Church celebrates the two giants of the early Church: St. Peter and St. Paul. Brash, bold Peter was a
simple fisherman, called by Our Lord to be a firsthand observer and sharer of his earthly ministry. Paul was a
Pharisee, a zealous persecutor of Christians until his encounter with the risen Christ on the way to Damascus
blinded him physically but opened his eyes to the truth of the Gospel. The leader of the Apostles, St. Peter's
ministry was to the Jews of his time. Jesus said to him, "You are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church" (Matt 16:18), and he is revered
as our first Pope. St. Paul, an articulate and persuasive preacher, undertook
missionary journeys to spread the Gospel in far-flung places and is
celebrated as the apostle to the Gentiles. Quite different in personality and
gifts, these two saints remind us that it is not we who choose Christ, but he
who chooses us. And because it is the Lord who calls, we can be sure God
has given us the gifts we need to answer that call.
St. Peter and St. Paul, pray for us,
that we may hear the Lord's call to us, and respond as you did
giving all we have and are in the service of the Kingdom.

and for
their families and friends
who mourn them.
Sacred Heart of Jesus,
have mercy on us!
Our GriefShare sessions are
on Tuesday evenings at 6:30
PM in the Parish Library of
Msgr. McCall Hall. If you or
someone you know is having a
hard time coping with the loss
of a loved one, please consider
coming to our gatherings and be with those who
understand. GriefShare is a 12-week Christian
based bereavement group. As many people have
found out, this road is not one to be traveled alone.
If you have any questions or need any more
information, please contact Pat at 585-0945.

FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION
TO THE SACRED HEART
SACRED HEART

SACRED HEART OF JESUS
JESUS

JESUS
The First Friday of each month was designated by
our Savior Himself as a day to be consecrated to
honoring His Sacred Heart ... As the object of this
devotion is to make our Savior Jesus Christ
ardently and perfectly loved, and to make
reparation for the outrages offered to Him in the
past, as well as for those which He daily receives
in the Blessed Eucharist ...
Jesus Christ merits our love at
all times, but alas! He is
despised and outraged in the
Sacrament of His love at all
times, and so people should at
all times make reparation to
Him. Attendance at the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass is
assuredly the best means of
honoring
and
loving
the
adorable Heart of Jesus.
Our First Friday Mass in honor of the Sacred
Heart will be offered at 6:30 PM on July 4, 2008
as part of St. Patrick's Golden Jubilee celebration.
Please note that we will NOT have a covered dish
dinner after Mass. Enjoy a safe night of fireworks
in honor of Independence Day!
Please join us for Mass! All are invited.
