Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
My Dear Friends in Christ,
You might remember that a few years ago, the police stopped Mel Gibson for
driving while intoxicated. The famous actor/director launched into a rant, laced with
anti-Semitic slurs. When the police report found its way into the world's media,
many people nodded their head and said that Mel Gibson has shown his true colors.
Commenting on the Mel Gibson case, Mark Shea made this observation:
"As a good child of a post-Freudian culture, I was raised to believe that what people say when they are
plastered, or insanely angry, or deeply afraid, or otherwise stripped of their normal rational faculties is Who They
Really Are. We talk that way all the time. `I thought he was a good man until the mask came off and I saw the ugly
Truth.' That sort of talk is natural as breathing for us. That's because, in America, everybody is a Calvinist,
including the Catholics. We believe that the fall is identical with nature, and therefore believe that when you see a
man in sin, you see him as he `really' is. Goodness is the mask, corruption is his nature."
Mark Shea is on to something. John Calvin taught a doctrine of "total depravity." He
said, "our nature is not only utterly devoid of goodness, but so prolific in all kinds of evil, that it
can never be idle." My point is not to debate Calvin, but point out that (perhaps,
unconsciously) we use his doctrine as a lens to understand today's Gospel. When Jesus says,
"Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known," we assume
that he is referring to dark secrets hateful things that people have done and gotten away with.
That is part of it, but it cannot be the whole story. Jesus goes on to say that we ourselves will
have a role in revealing secrets. Does Jesus want us to become gossips?
Does he want us to become people who root out the misdeeds of others?
There is an Ugly Truth in all of this. Jesus says, "Whoever denies me before others, I
will deny before my heavenly Father." The Ugly Truth is not that we have done misdeeds.
We can submit those sins to Jesus for pardon and healing. He can even bring good out of
the wrong we have done. The great tragedy is not sin in itself, but the failure to ask
forgiveness to turn from God, to deny that one needs Jesus.
The Ugly Truth is the possibility that you and I can deny Jesus; turn away from him forever. But there is also a
Beautiful Truth we can at any moment come to him. Right now we are at the beginning of summer. For many
people this is a time to relax a little bit, enjoy some good weather and maybe even take a little vacation. But it is
also a good time to turn to Jesus. And it is a good time to proclaim secrets from the housetops. I am not talking
about evil things that others have done, but the good things. Good deeds often remain hidden. Shakespeare wrote,
"The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones." Perhaps you and I could do
something to remedy that imbalance. And we should never forget the one great and lasting good to turn one's
heart to Jesus.
When I hear about the sudden death of someone like Tim Russert I have to admit that it makes me think. Is
there some part of my life that I am foolishly trying to hide from the Lord? I cannot judge Tim Russert. He
seemed like a good man and a good Catholic, but I know almost nothing about him. I
do, however, know a lot about someone else. On the day of the Final Judgment, my life
will be an open book as will yours. St. Paul describes how sin has reigned in our
world. At the Last Judgment we will see human history from beginning to end. It will
not be a pretty sight. Our own hidden role in that history will become evident. But that
is not the whole story. St. Paul says that the grace of God is more powerful than sin.
Now is the time to open our hearts completely to the mercy of Christ.
Praised be Jesus Christ,
Fr. Pecchie

PS. I will be with the choir on their trip to Canada this week. Please pray for our safety
as we travel. Also be assured of my prayers, for you all, at the Holy Shrines of Canada.

The secret that Jesus wants us to proclaim from the rooftop is this: Yes, we have
gone astray, we have fallen into destructive behaviors, but God still loves us. Think
about how he delights in tiny creatures such as sparrows. You and I are worth more
than many sparrows. What God wants us to do is acknowledge him before others.

First Reading Peter was in prison, but prayer
by the church was made to God on his behalf
(Acts 12:1-11).
Psalm The angel of the Lord will rescue those
who fear him (Psalm 34).
Second Reading I have finished the race; I
have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18).
Gospel Simon Peter said, "You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God" (Matt 16:13-19).
Do I show my enthusiasm as Peter did
in acknowledging who Christ is?
Like Paul, may I live and work for Christ
while also suffering and dying for Him.

FEAR NOT
How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death?
That is the question addressed by today's scriptures. We hear of
the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death
that "reigned from Adam to Moses" (Romans 5:14). We hear of
the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to
preach and heal.
Through all this tribulation
one message rings out loud
and clear--"Do not be
afraid!" The God who saved
Jeremiah and the psalmist and
Jesus is fully present to save
us through the gracious gift of
Jesus Christ. We have
nothing and no one to fear.

A special year will be dedicated for the bimillennium celebrations of the birth of the
Apostle Paul. This PAULINE YEAR will begin from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009.
On the Eve of the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, celebrated on
June 28, 2007 at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls, Pope Benedict XVI
stated in his homily at Vespers: "Dear brothers and sisters, as in early times, today too
Christ needs apostles ready to sacrifice themselves. He needs witnesses and martyrs like St.
Paul. Paul, a former violent persecutor of Christians, when he fell to the ground dazzled by
the divine light on the road to Damascus, did not hesitate to change sides to the Crucified One and followed him
without second thoughts. He lived and worked for Christ, for him he suffered and died. How timely is his
example today! And for this reason I am pleased to announce officially that we shall be dedicating a special
Jubilee Year to the Apostle Paul from 28 June 2008 to 29 June 2009, on the occasion of the bimillennium of his
birth, which historians have placed between the years 7 and 10 AD. It will be possible to celebrate this `Pauline
Year' in a privileged way in Rome where the sarcophagus which, by the unanimous opinion of experts and an
undisputed tradition, preserves the remains of the Apostle Paul has been
preserved beneath the Papal Altar of this Basilica for 20 centuries."
This Pauline Year presents us with many opportunities to spread
our Catholic faith here in the Parish of St. Patrick and beyond.
Throughout this year we will acquaint you with the life and ministry of
Saint Paul in this bulletin section. Throughout the year we will also be
offering prayer services, bible studies and other opportunities to study,
pray and celebrate the life, inspired writing, spirituality and
missionary spirit of Saint Paul.

An article written by a Jewish person re: being Catholic
Be Proud of Being Catholic
(Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland
Jewish businessman - NOT a Catholic)
Submitted by Dee Lynd
Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in
the United States, namely the Catholic Church?
Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to your Church of 10 billion
dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. Your graduates go on to
graduate studies at the rate of 92%, all at a cost to you. To the rest of the Americans it's free.
The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students. The Catholic
Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5
people - not just Catholics - in the United States today.
But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They
have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the
institution of marriage. Let me give you some figures that you as Catholics should know and remember. For
example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38%
acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by the United Methodist Church, 41.8 % of
clergywomen reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed. Meanwhile,
1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found
guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem.
A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had
expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the
church has been receiving.
The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not
necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably
been totally weeded out by now.
Walk with your shoulders high and your head higher. Be a proud member
of the most important non governmental agency in the United States.
Then remember what Jeremiah said: "Stand by the roads, and look and
ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find
rest for your souls." Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and
reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions. Be
proud that you're a Catholic.

The month of
June is dedicated
to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus.
As we begin the Year of St. Paul, let us remember that
"The Apostle of the Gentiles, who dedicated hi
mself to the spreading of the good news to
all peoples, spent himself for the unity and harmony of all Christians," the Pope said.
"
May he guide us and protect us in this
bi-mil
lenary celebration," he added,
"helping us to advance in the humble and sincere
search
for the full unity of all the members of the mystical body of Christ."
