17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Sisters and Brothers,
Another great opportunity for me to write a Pastor's letter! How are you doing? I
hope you are having a wonderful summer so far in spite of all the heat and humidity.
It's hard to believe that it is already the last weekend of July. Anyway, are you ready
for this? Please get ready for a big laugh. The Sunday school teacher was
describing that when Lot's wife looked back at Sodom she turned into a pillar of salt,
when Bobby interrupted. "My mommy looked back once while she was driving," he announced, "and she
turned into a telephone pole."
While writing this letter I could hear the lightening and thunder in my room and the sky is ready for the
heavy down pour. I love the rain when the whole creation breaks into dance and expresses its
happiness with its nice and fresh outlook after the storm. We need to pray for more rain because we
can't imagine our existence without rain.
Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
The readings for this Sunday assure us that God will give us what we ask.
The reading from the book of Genesis is a rather humorous story about God
giving Abraham what he asked. The reading from the gospel according to Luke
says that Jesus' disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. Jesus
taught them the prayer we know as the Our Father, the Lord's Prayer. He
taught them to ask God for the coming of His kingdom, daily bread, forgiveness
of sins, etc. Jesus used parables to assure his disciples that their prayer would
be answered.
So many of us struggle with prayer either because we don't create the time
for it or we don't like to do it. Some have simply stopped praying completely.
Some have said, "What's the point in praying? My prayers are never answered
anymore anyway." Some have given up even before they started. What are we to do in the light of these
kinds of experiences? We must return to Jesus and ask, "Teach us to pray!"
What is prayer? Basically prayer is talking to God. When we pray, we are opening up our lives and
hearts to a conversation with our creator.
The Lord's Prayer is probably the very first prayer we have learned as children. How often do we say
this prayer? How often do we say the words without listening to what we are invited to experience? In
some ways the Our Father has become a mantra that rolls off our tongues without the slightest
recognition of what is expressed.
We are invited to examine our own prayer life ... Do I pray? How do I pray? What do I pray for?
Jesus literally invites us to be men and women of prayer to embrace
the spirit and attitude of prayer that actively seeks out and gratefully
celebrates God's presence in all things. Jesus said, the more you honor
me the more you will be blessed.
Lord, teach us to Pray.
Have a Blessed and Safe
Summer!
Peace,
Fr. Prakash Madanu
JMJ
From our Associate Pastor
First Reading -- Vanity of vanities! All
things are vanity! (Ecclesiastes 1:2;
2:21-23).
Psalm -- If today you hear his voice,
harden not your hearts (Psalm 90).
Second Reading -- You, too, will appear
with Christ your life in glory (Colossians
3:1-5, 9-11).
Gospel -- For though one may be rich,
one's life does not consist of possessions
(Luke 12:13-21).
Is God the center of my life
or are worldly possessions?
Do I need to make any changes?
Readings Ahead:
August 5, 2007
18th Sunday
in Ordinary Time
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
KEEP PRAYING
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often known as
"the persistent mother." She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his
back on his Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to
her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to
talk to God about Augustine than to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her
son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild
ways, was baptized, and later ordained and
named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on
to become one of the Church's greatest scholars.
Today's readings address the importance of
persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation
that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask
about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in
Luke's Gospel, tells his disciples to "ask and you
will receive; seek and you will find; knock and
the door will be opened to you" (Luke 11:9).
This is our charge: keep praying.

Jesus is describing God's immeasurable generosity when He says in today's

But it should also be the description of us as Christian stewards - those seeking to

Trained as a lawyer, St.
Alphonsus lef t t he leg al
profession to become a priest.
The founder of the Congregation
of the Most Holy Redeemer
(Redemptorists) and later a
bishop, he used his gifts to
preach and write on moral theology. But St. Alphonsus
understood stewardship, too. Listen to these words
from a sermon he preached on the love of Christ: "Since
God knew that man is enticed by favors, he wished to
bind him to his love by means of gifts ... He gave him a
soul, made in his likeness, and endowed with memory,
intelligence and will; he gave him a body equipped with
senses; it was for him that he created heaven and earth
and such an abundance of things. He made all these
things out of love for man, so that all creation might
serve man, and man in turn might love God out of
gratitude for so many gifts." Do I have St. Alphonsus'
"attitude of gratitude" for all the gifts the Lord has given
me?
Has anyone told you it was
okay to cry? Women, men or

St. John Mary Vianney
St. John Mary Vianney (1786-1839)
Feast Day: August 4
St. John Vianney, sometimes called the
Cure of Ars, is known for his kindness
and dedication as a confessor and
spiritual director. But this good man
had to struggle to become a priest. He found his studies
difficult, but finally the decision was made that "his
goodness was sufficient to offset his deficiencies in
learning," and he was ordained in 1815. Assigned to the
parish church in Ars, France, St. John Vianney gave
himself entirely to the service of God's people,
sometimes spending 12 or more hours per day hearing
confessions and helping people become reconciled with
God. In this way, he devoted all of his time and talent to
the Lord. And of treasure, he said, "the Christian's
treasure is not on earth but in heaven. Our thoughts,
then ought to be directed to where our treasure is. This
is the glorious duty of man: to pray and to love. If you
pray and love, that is where man's happiness lies."
