16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
I would like to share with you about the Music conference I attended
with Paulette last week. The theme for the conference was "That All May
Be One." As Christians we are called to be united with one another on our journey
of faith. In the Catholic Church which rests on the Gospel of Jesus, being part of
Christ's body, being one with Christ is tantamount. In being one with Christ we
are called to be one with each other as Christ is one with the Other Persons of the
Trinity: Father and Holy Spirit. Now on paper that looks great, but in practice that
becomes a big struggle. Hence, our spiritual journey to perfection, to become holy, to be saints.
Now one of the obvious places for disunity can be Church music. Because as human beings we have
preferences, likes and dislikes when it comes to what music we like. Big Band, Classical, Jazz, Country-
Western, Top 40s, Rap, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Rock etc., etc., and then in each major category there are
distinctions too numerous to list. But I think you get the point. Just as there are different styles in the
world of music, there are different styles in the Church. There is Gregorian Chant, Traditional Choral,
more contemporary styles with a plethora of instrumentation, and just as we are called to be one as
individuals, different styles of music can be used in the one worship of God.
However, that does not necessarily mean all styles be used in the celebration of the
Mass. The Church has taught, and it has been reechoed through the Fathers of
Vatican II, that Chant is to have pride and place in the Liturgy and the Organ is the
queen of all instruments for the worship of God. That being said it does not say that it
is the only type of music nor the only instrument acceptable to be used at Mass. And
so, therefore, at St. Patrick we try to accommodate different styles of music so that the
worship of God can be attained by all in the celebration of the Mass. That does not
mean that all music is going to be appealing to everyone all the time. But just as we,
who are different, are called to be one with each other, respecting our differences and
commonalities; so, too, in music are we called to be accepting. In accepting different types of music, we
recognize that all will not appeal to us but we accept that it may aid others to reach God.
Therefore, I hope that as we worship God, striving to be united in Christ
with our brothers and sisters, we will allow our music not to be an added
cause of division, but an opportunity to draw all into our Triune God.
Gospel Reflection
Until that day, we anticipate the full revelation of heaven by
contemplating the glory of God on the face of Christ, who came to reveal the
Father to us. Martha's sister Mary has begun to enjoy the grace of prayerful
adoration as she sits at the Lord's feet and drinks in His words. "Mary has chosen the good portion." (Lk
10:42) Mary's choice was prayerful attention, contemplation and adoration. All who follow vocations in
the world must embrace the active life of service, all the while remembering that prayer and communion
with God are the "better portion", superior to the active part of Christian life.
It is the activity of prayer which best expresses and fulfills our duty to adore
almighty God. Prayer sometimes takes the form of contemplation. Adoration of the real
presence of the Lord in the Eucharistic Host is the most privileged and most perfect
contemplation of God this side of heaven.
"Contemplation is a gaze of faith, fixed on Jesus. `I look at him and he looks at me': this
is what a certain peasant of Ars, St. John Vianney, used to say while praying before the
tabernacle. This focus on Jesus is a renunciation of self. His gaze purifies our heart;
the light of the countenance of Jesus illumines the eyes of our heart and teaches us to
see everything in the light of his truth and his compassion for all men. Contemplation
also turns its gaze on the mysteries of the life of Christ. Thus it learns the "interior
knowledge of our Lord," the more to love him and follow him."

First Reading -- Abraham said to the
Lord: Will you sweep away the innocent
with the guilty? Should not the judge of
the world act with justice? (Genesis
18:20-32).
Psalm -- Lord, on the day I called for
help, you answered me (Psalm 138).
Second Reading -- You were buried with
Christ in baptism, in which you were also
raised with Christ (Colossians 2:12-14).
Gospel -- Everyone who asks, receives;
and the one who seeks, finds (Luke 11:1-
13).
When praying the Lord's Prayer, does it
become only routine? How can I develop a
greater devotion when praying and become
more persistent and bold as Jesus suggests?

WATCH YOUR POSTURE
Our posture is often a tip-off to our
hospitality and reverence for the Lord. Note
the actions of Abraham as he greeted the
Lord in the presence of three men who
appeared near his tent. He ran from the
entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed
to the ground as he met them. He and
Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal
and bring food and water to their guests.
In the Gospel story, Jesus' friend Mary sat at his feet in order
to listen to him speak.
How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What do our
actions show? Do we remember the Lord's presence in the
Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture
readings? How do we acknowledge his presence in our
brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards?
Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord's
presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned
to him.

St. James the Apostle
St. James the Apostle
Patron Saint of pharmacists, pilgrims
Feast Day: July 25
St. James the Apostle was the son of
Zebedee, the brother of St. John the
Evangelist. He was among the first to
hear and answer the call to follow Jesus, and he was a witness
to the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus' daughter and
Jesus' agony in the garden of Gethsemane. He was also the
one whose mother asked Jesus for places of preferment for her
two sons. "Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at
your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom," she
pleaded. The answer Jesus gives her is a blueprint for
discipleship and an invitation to stewardship "Whoever
wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever
wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the
Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give
his life as a ransom for many" (Mt 20:21b, 26b-28). Like his
Master, St. James did give his life and was the first of the
apostles to be martyred. May we, too, hear and answer the
call of Jesus, and then spend ourselves joyfully in the service
of others.

St. Joachim is the Patron Saint of fathers & grandfathers
St. Anne is the patron saint against poverty, of homemakers,
(grand) mothers, pregnant women, childless people
Feast Day: July 26
This feast honors the parents of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joachim &
St. Anne. Scripture is silent about
these two, the grandparents of Jesus,
but early tradition and some non-
biblical writings tell us their names.
And what a gift they gave us! St. John Damascene says
of them: "Joachim and Anne, how blessed a couple! All
creation is indebted to you. For at your hands the
Creator was offered a gift excelling all other gifts: a
chaste mother, who alone was worthy of him . . . While
leading a devout and holy life in your human nature, you
gave birth to a daughter nobler than the angels whose
queen she now is." What an inspiration St. Joachim and
St. Anne are to all who practice stewardship as a way of
life. They were quiet, unassuming people who lived
their faith and became an integral part of God's plan of
salvation. If we will put ourselves our lives and our
gifts at the Lord's disposal, he will use us, too.
