13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
I recently came across an article by Bishop Arthur Serratelli of the
Diocese of Patterson, NJ. He is reflecting on the loss of the sense of
the sacred within our culture and our Church. The following is an excerpt
from the article that I would like to share with you:
"Living in our world, we breathe the toxic air that surrounds us. Even
within the most sacred precincts of the Church, we witness a loss of the
sense of the sacred. With the enthusiasm that followed the Second
Vatican Council, there was a well-intentioned effort to make the liturgy
modern. It became commonplace to say that the liturgy had to be
relevant to the worshipper. Old songs were jettisoned. The guitar
replaced the organ. Some priests even began to walk down the road of liturgical innovation,
only to discover it was a dead end. And all the while, the awareness of entering into
something sacred that has been given to us from above and draws us out of ourselves and
into the mystery of God was gone.
"Teaching about the Mass began to emphasize the community. The Mass
was seen as a community meal. It was something everyone did together.
Lost was the notion of sacrifice. Lost [was] the awesome mystery of the
Eucharist as Christ's sacrifice on the cross. The priest was no longer
seen as specially consecrated. He was no different than the laity. With
all of this, [there was] a profound loss of the sacred.
"Not one factor can account for the decline in Mass attendance, Church marriages, baptisms
and funerals in the last years. But most certainly, the loss of the sense of the sacred has had
a major impact.
"Walk into any church today before Mass and you will notice that the silence
that should embrace those who stand in God's House is gone. Even the Church
is no longer a sacred place. Gathering for Mass sometimes becomes as noisy as
gathering for any other social event. We may not have the ability to do much
about the loss of the sacredness of life in the songs, videos and movies of our
day. But, most assuredly, we can do much about helping one another recover
the sacredness of God's Presence in His Church."
Bishop Serratelli has made some valid points that we as Catholics must all reflect upon. Let us pray that
at St. Patrick, we will also have a sense of the sacred especially when we enter our Church. May we
always give God the priority of our lives and of our time especially when we come into his sanctuary.
As we celebrate our Independence as a nation, let us give thanks to almighty God
that we live in a country that is free, that we live in a country where we can
worship God without fear for our lives, and that we live in a country that has been
claimed for God from its inception. May God Bless America! And may we
always revere God's place at the heart of our Nation!
Also I want to let you know that our Jubilee committee has met and there are 47 willing members of our
community on this committee. The Committee will be co-chaired by Ginny Copodonna and Jennifer
West. I thank them, especially for their volunteering, as well as all those who joined the committee. We
will have a great time as we celebrate 50 years of worshipping as a community of faith in Largo.
Praised Be Jesus Christ!

First Reading -- As a mother
comforts her child, so will I comfort
you (Isaiah 66:10-14c).
Psalm -- Let all the earth cry out to
God with joy (Psalm 66).
Second Reading -- May I never
boast except in the cross of our Lord
Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14-18).
Gospel -- Rejoice because your
names are written in heaven (Luke
10:1-12, 17-20 [1-9]).
Are we using God's gifts of our eyes,
ears and hands to serve others?
Lord, help free us
from all selfishness.

We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
FOCUS ON THE MISSION
"There are so many things to do." "We
have so little time." How many variations
of these statements have you heard or
even said yourself?
Actually neither statement is completely
true. There are many things to do in this
life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working,
searching, conniving, and worrying our way to "gratify[ing] the
desires of the flesh," as Paul relates in today's second reading, are
really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom
that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world,
and even more in the next.
Elisha, the prophet Elijah's chosen servant, was slightly
befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he
returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his
people. Only then did he follow.
Jesus demands something different, something more of his
disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop
everything and follow him. Now, not later.

Prayer for our Nation
God of our Fathers, Shepherd of Thy people,
Lord of free men's souls,
bless Thou our nation with a valiant, Godly spirit,
with a vision to see, with the courage to try,
with the power to achieve, that,
marching behind Thee, Thy people shall not perish.
God, bless our America!
Hear our prayer for our united peoples,
grant guidance to our leaders,
protection to our children,
and teach each of us Thy way of life
in good will and peace. Amen.

FROM OUR MUSIC MINISTRY:
Our choirs have just finished another great year of service. During our busy season of
Lent, we worked on a CD that will be coming out in November, just in time for Thanksgiving,
as we celebrate our Jubilee Year. For unforeseen circumstances our trip to Canada has
been postponed to June 2008. This trip will be a pilgrimage to Montreal, Quebec City and
St. Anne de Beaupre. This will be open to all parishioners who want to join us as part of our Jubilee year
celebration. Thanks to all choir members for your time, talent and dedication!

"Doubting Thomas" we call this
saint. And yet, there was
apparently no doubt when the
Lord first called him, no
hesitancy to leave everything
behind and follow Jesus.
Stewardship focuses on hearing
the call of God and using our gifts to serve the Lord and
our neighbor. But in the story of Thomas we hear
again that God can use even our weakness in the
service of the Kingdom. Not present when the other
disciples first saw the Risen Lord, Thomas declared
that he would not believe unless he could actually see
and touch the wounds of Christ. But when, a week
later, he did see the Lord and was invited to examine
the marks of the crucifixion, he declared in love and
awe, "My Lord and my God!"
Pope Gregory the Great wrote of him, "The disbelief
of Thomas has done more for our faith than the faith of
any other disciple. As he touches Christ and is won
over to belief, every doubt is cast aside and our faith is
strengthened."
