4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Fr. Paul Pecchie

My Dear Friends in Christ,
I would like to thank all those who came to join us for
our Prayer Service for Life. There was a great turn out. Let
us continue to pray for an end of this great evil and restore the
sanctity and dignity of life in all its stages.
In a Wednesday audience Pope John Paul I told the story of an Irish carpenter. Like many stories
from Ireland, it begins with tragedy, but ends with humor. The tragedy is that the Irish carpenter falls
from a roof and breaks both legs. When they take him to the hospital, a nun tries to console him. "Poor
man," she says, "you hurt yourself terribly when you fell." In spite of his pain, the carpenter replies,
"No, Sister. It wasn't the fall that hurt me. It was when I arrived at the ground."
Well, we see something similar in today's Gospel. Jesus' public ministry
begins with a disaster. Think about it. Of his entire time on earth, Jesus spent about
90% in Nazareth. The Nazarenes knew him intimately or at least they thought
they did. When he stood up to do the reading, the people at first reacted with
delight. But then came a change. He told them something that shocked them. This
prophecy of Isaiah, he said, has been fulfilled...in me. At those words the
Nazarenes wanted to kill him.
We have to step back and consider what was going on. The Nazarenes knew
Jesus as a neighbor and no doubt a very good neighbor. What scandalized them
was that this man was saying he is the Messiah.
That was a big claim, but Jesus was ready to back it up.
The Nazarenes would have none of it.
Now, for most of us, such a negative reaction would stop us in our tracks. If I can't convince my own
townspeople and relatives, who can I convince? Jesus, however, did not throw in the towel. He lifted
up his head and went to the nearby towns.
What a lesson for you and me! The lesson has a lot to tell us as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week.
It is a struggle to maintain a Catholic school especially in a parish like ours. Problems surround us
and we can easily fall into negativity. That is when we need to lift up our heads and remember our
mission: to proclaim Jesus Christ and his saving love.
A story from the life of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta can help us understand the purpose of
our Catholic school. When she opened a house to care for men living with AIDS, a reporter
asked if her sisters talked to the patients about God. "Of course," she said, "We pray with
them and teach them to pray. We take them to confession to be reconciled with God."
A bit scandalized, the reporter said, "But many people think that evangelization does not
always mean talking about Jesus."
"And who do they think we should talk about?"" asked Mother Teresa.
"They say it is enough to simply accompany them," replied the reporter.
"Well then," said Mother Teresa, "They are not missionaries. They are not
proclaiming Christ. They are doing it for something, but we're doing it for Someone."
Brothers and sisters, our Catholic school exists not for something, but for Someone. St. Patrick
School exists to bring the love of Christ to our children and their families; now that is a tall order,
especially when we realize the negative forces working against our students and families. And we can
easily become discouraged by the tepid response of many people and by our own weaknesses. People
today are no different than the Nazarenes. But if we are united with Jesus, we will lift up our heads and
re-focus on the mission given to us. After all, we are not doing this for something, but for Someone.
Let us always remember that the school is a ministry of our parish. And as a ministry, you support and
encourage our mission as a parish just as any other ministry does. Let us pray for a greater unity among
Church and School and that we will all be successful in proclaiming Christ to all the world.
Happy Catholic Schools Week St. Patrick!

(1 Corinthians 12:31-13:4-13)
THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE
It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to write what
we now know as the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians, knew
that he was penning what was to become one of the keystones
of Christian ethics. In this brief passage, he set down ideals
about love that have held fast through the centuries. Sometimes
we may think that because these are ideals to which we aspire,
we are excused from them in our daily living.
But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends,
providing them with some sound advice about what it meant--
and still means--to live in love,
day by day, as a follower of
Christ. We find in his words to
his friends a broadening of the
great commands of Jesus to
love God and neighbor. Today
we hear what this love must
look like in our own actions,
and how it ought to guide our
relationships with others.

St. John Bosco
St. John Bosco
St. John Bosco
Patron Saint of boys, editors, laborers, schoolchildren
Feast Day: January 31
Born to poor parents in northern
Italy, St. John Bosco began his min-
istry by providing shelter and reli-
gious instruction for neglected
boys. His own education was made
possible by the gift of a generous
benefactor, and St. John Bosco was
not too proud to seek the support of
other wealthy and powerful patrons
to expand his work. With others
drawn to this ministry, he provided
religious and vocational training to hundreds of young
men and formulated a system of education based on
"reason, religion, and kindness." "Let us regard those
boys over whom we have some authority as our own
sons,"
he wrote. "There must be no hostility in our
minds, no contempt in our eyes, no insult on our lips. We
must use mercy for the present and have hope for the fu-
ture, as is fitting for true fathers who are eager for real
correction and improvement."
St. John Bosco used his
personal history, his love for young people, and his gift
for teaching to educate, inspire, and improve the lives of
many. May his example prompt us to prayerfully re-
assess who we are and what we have - and how we can
use those gifts for others.

St. Blaise

St. Blaise
St. Blaise (Died 316)
Patron Saint of animals, construction workers, stonecutters,
throat diseases, veterinarians, wool weavers
Feast Day: February 3
St. Blaise was the bishop of Sebaste
in Armenia early in the fourth cen-
tury and was martyred there in 316.
Beyond that, very little is known
about his life, and the legends that
surround him stem from a book writ-
ten more than 400 years after his
death. Apparently, he was a good
bishop who worked tirelessly to pro-
mote the spiritual and physical
health of his people, and the wide
distribution of his relics gives evidence of his popularity
during the Middle Ages. One popular legend says that a
young man choking on a fish bone was restored to health
through the prayers of St. Blaise, and it is for that reason
that many Catholics have their throats blessed on this day.
"Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and mar-
tyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat and
from every other evil,"
the priest says as he touches each
throat with two blessed candles. God will use us, too, and
whatever material or spiritual gifts he has blessed us with,
when we put those gifts, and ourselves, at his disposal.
This feast has many titles - the Presentation of the Lord,
the Purification of Mary, and Candlemas. It celebrates the
day when, in accordance with Jewish law, Mary and Jo-
seph took the infant Jesus to the temple to present their
first-born son to the Lord and make the required sacrifi-
cial offering. At the temple that day was Simeon, an old
man who had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he
would live to see God's Anointed One. Rejoicing, the old
man took Jesus in his arms and praised God for fulfilling
his promise, saying, "My eyes have seen your salvation,
which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for
revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people
Israel" (Lk 2:30-32). In the Gospel account of this event,
we see two quiet but powerful spiritual gifts the obedi-
ence of Mary and Joseph, who faithfully fulfilled the law
by coming to the temple to make the customary offering,
and the patient trust of Simeon who heard the word of the
Lord and believed it. Mary, Joseph and Simeon were
grateful receivers of their spiritual gifts,
and in the good stewardship of those
gifts they gave us a gift, too the lived
witness of obedience to the will of God
and the joy of expectant trust fulfilled.
