Confessions are heard on Saturdays, 3:30 and
5:30 PM (also on Wednesdays before First Friday;
8:00 AM and 9:30 AM).
Baptisms are arranged at least two months in
advance by calling the parish office.
Marriages are scheduled with the priest at least six
months ahead of time.
Anointing of the Sick: If you anticipate a hospital
stay, please ask to be anointed prior to
hospitalization at one of the daily Masses. In case of
an emergency, please call at any hour. The infirm
may call the parish office to arrange for a priest to
anoint them at home.
Visits to the Homebound: Our Eucharistic
Ministers bring Holy Communion to our homebound
parishioners, usually on a weekly basis. Please call
the parish office if you are no longer able to attend
Mass.
Parish Registration is done by filling out a green
card at the main church doors or at the rectory.

My Dear Friends in Christ,
It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of January and well
underway in Ordinary Time. We want to remember in our Prayers all the
youth from St. Patrick and St. Jude who are attending the March for Life.
We pray that their witness will establish the end to this senseless killing of innocent life.
Life is sacred and we must do all in our power to restore the Sanctity and Dignity of Human life.
No nation that permits the killing of the innocent has survived nor will survive. It is amazing that our
founding fathers could articulate so well:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain
unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness. . . Declaration of Independence
Please join us in Church for the Candlelight Rosary Procession on
Monday evening at 7 PM as we pray for the return to an
appreciation of human life and its sanctity & dignity in all stages.
On August 27, 1978 - one day after his election to the papacy - Pope John Paul II made this
statement: "Yesterday I went peacefully into the Sistine Chapel to vote. I did not imagine what was
going to happen. When there began to be a danger for me, two of my colleagues reached out to me:
`Take courage' they said, `If the Lord gives a burden, he also gives the help to carry it.' "
In our Old Testament reading we hear about the people of Israel receiving a
particular burden. During the reconstruction of the temple, they discovered an ancient
Book of the Law. When Ezra the priest read it aloud to them, they first rejoiced, but
they also wept because they knew how weak they were to obey all the Lord's
commands. Nehemiah who was the civil authority gave them a help: he provided a
meal of delicious foods and told them to eat and drink. "Do not be saddened," he said,
"rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength!"
Jesus received the greatest burden of all. By his ministry of teaching and healing
and above all by his sacrificial death he would fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: "to
proclaim liberty to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go
free
." His burden involved the salvation of every human being. Since his burden was
the greatest, he received the greatest help: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me..."
You and I have received a burden obviously not as great as Jesus or Pope John Paul II or that
of the people of Israel to whom the Lord gave a great burden of suffering. Even so, you or I might be
tempted to walk away from our particular opportunity. I encourage you to remember the example of St.
John Vianney. As a young man he undertook studies for the priesthood, but he found them extremely
difficult. Moreover, he suffered from a chronic stomach problem which left him feeling weak and
tired. He decided he just could not continue. His spiritual director recognized something special in
John and said to him, "If you leave now, you are saying `goodbye priesthood' and `goodbye souls'."
Those words "goodbye souls" rang in his ears and from that moment, he devoted every ounce of his
effort to that goal the salvation of souls. For over four decades he labored in a rural village and he
brought thousands to Christ.
St. John Vianney accepted a particular burden and the Lord gave him extraordinary help. You and
I have also been given a burden to bring souls to Christ. The Lord will not fail to give us the help we
need.

LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST
Some of Saint Paul's best known and most beloved imagery
is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have
heard last week and this week: the many
gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the
many members making up the one Body of
Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture
more accurately sum up how Christian
vocations work together.
Unlike some of Paul's other writings,
which are a product of the social and
religious conventions of his time, these
enable us to look at our own lives and the
lives of those around us to discern what gifts,
what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for
the good of all. We can likewise know the
joys and sorrows of the other members of
the Body and share in them for the
strengthening of the whole Body of Christ.
First Reading -- I am with you to de-

Psalm -- I will sing of your salvation
(Psalm 71).
Second Reading -- If I have all faith
so as to move mountains, but do not

CANDLELIGHT ROSARY VIGIL
Our Respect Life Committee invites all parishioners to join our prayers
with the national Pro-Life Marchers in Washington, D.C. We have 18
people from our parish joining other youth in our Diocese on the
March for Life. On this 34th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legaliz-
ing abortion, we will have a Candlelight Rosary Vigil on Monday, January 22nd at 7 PM in
Church. Let us make the sacrifice and lift up our prayers that 2007 will bring an end to the
holocaust of abortions. Every single day in our country, 4,000 babies are killed by abortion.
You can make a difference!
Next weekend you can help women and chil-
dren. Please pick-up a baby bottle after
Mass. During the week, fill it with coins,
bills, or checks and return it the following

Feast Day: January 25
The conversion of St. Paul is the
story of a life- and world-changing
"U-turn." A man of education and
influence, Saul used his knowledge
of the law and his standing among
the religious leaders of his time to
persecute the earliest Christians.
Then, after a personal encounter
with the Risen Christ, Saul is reborn
as Paul, and becomes the apostle to the Gentiles, using his
persuasive pen and enthusiastic zeal to spread the good
news of the Gospel. "I am the least of the apostles," he
says. "In fact, because I persecuted the church of God, I
do not even deserve the name. But by God's favor I am
what I am. This favor of his to me has not proved fruit-
less. Indeed, I have worked harder than all the others,
not on my own but through the favor of God
." By God's
favor we are what we are; in his goodness, he has given us
all that we have. We are good stewards if, like St. Paul,
we can say that God's favor bears fruit in our lives -- if
"[we] are grateful for what [we] have received and eager
to cultivate [our] gifts out of love for God and one an-
other
."

St. Angela Merici
St. Angela Merici (1474-1540), virgin
Feast Day: January 27
Orphaned as a teenager, St. Angela Merici became a
Third Order Franciscan and committed herself to a life of
austerity and good works. In particular, she was con-
cerned about the lack of education for poor children, espe-
cially young girls. Drawn by her example and leadership,
other young women who shared her ideals joined her, giv-
ing instruction to the little girls in the neighborhood.
Their intent was to re-evangelize the family by providing
solid Christian education to future wives and mothers.
The members of this "Company of St. Ursula" continued
to live at home and took no formal vows, although they
were committed to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedi-
ence. Only after St. Angela's death did they become a
recognized religious congrega-
tion, the first of many teaching
orders for women. Quietly,
without fanfare or formal
structure, St. Angela Merici
and her companions put their
faith to work out of love for
God and for the benefit of
those who had less than they.
That's everyday stewardship --
to use the gifts we have to meet
the needs of others.
