My Dear Friends in Christ,
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord!
On this Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, it is good to reflect on our baptism
and what it means to us. The greatest of gifts is ours in baptism: God's very own
life and love a life to overcome the death which is our inheritance from Adam's
sin, a love to overpower and win us away from love of self to love of God.
Another of the baptismal gifts we receive is the ability, in Christ, to praise and
worship the Father in the Holy Spirit, and to be found pleasing to God as we do so.
The baptismal font was often placed in the courtyard or near the entrance of early
churches, and the practice continues in many places today. We "entered" the Body
of Christ at the moment of our baptism. We became worshipping members of the
Son, pleasing and beloved by the Father, through our baptism. This is why holy
water fonts are placed near the entrance of our churches.
As you dip your fingers into the font and make the sign of the cross every time
you enter the house of worship of the Lord remember, it is by the power of your baptism that you
render fitting and pleasing worship to God in your spiritual sacrifice of holiness of life and, most fully,
the Eucharistic sacrifice. It is by your bath in the waters flowing from the side of Christ the priest in
his perfect offering that you have been incorporated into the one, holy, catholic and apostolic body of
Christ in the world, his bride, the Church.
We encounter the Lord Jesus most perfectly and most fully each week in the Eucharistic Sacrifice, for
He truly speaks to us when the Scriptures are proclaimed in the assembly. Moreover, at the Communion
of the Mass, we truly receive Him Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Most Blessed Sacrament.
By this God-given means, the grace of our baptism will grow ever stronger, becoming "a fountain within
us, welling up to eternal life."
Living Eucharist
On December 30
th
, ten of our parishioners attended a Mass
at All Saints Church, celebrated by our Bishop, to inaugurate the
Diocesan Initiative on the Eucharist. This is in conjunction with
Bishop Lynch's Pastoral Letter, Living Eucharist. It is a three year
program, and in our first year we are focusing on the Liturgy of the
Word. At this Mass, Bishop Lynch gave each parish a new Book
of the Gospels. This will be placed on the shelf where the Crucifix
was, and remain throughout the year, as a holy reminder to us of the power of God's Word, our need to
reflect upon it, and to live it with our lives.
Praised be Jesus Christ!

CANDLELIGHT ROSARY VIGIL
Our Respect Life Committee invites all parishioners to join our prayers with the
national Pro-Life Marchers in Washington, D.C. On this year's anniversary of
the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, we will have a
Candlelight Rosary Vigil on Tuesday, January 22nd at 7 PM in Church. Let
us make the sacrifice and lift up our prayers that 2008 will bring an end to the
holocaust of abortions. Every single day in our country, 4,000 babies are killed
by abortion.

GOD'S BELOVED
Only one week has passed since
we celebrated the feast of the Epiphany.
No longer are we focused on the images of
the child Jesus surrounded by his parents
and the magi at the manger in Bethlehem.
Today, it's as if the Church has pushed the
"fast forward" button in the life of Jesus.
Today we celebrate his baptism in the Jordan. When the Lord
Jesus rises from the waters of baptism, the heavens open and a
voice announces, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am
well pleased." (Matt 3:17) This event sets the stage for the
unfolding of Jesus Christ's life and work, which will become
our focus for the rest of the year as we tune our ears to Saint
Matthew's Gospel. As we prepare ourselves for this work, let
us be reminded that we, too, were counted among God's
beloved at the moment of our own baptism.

A Brother's View on a Vocation
By Joseph Blum
Priests are called by God to be an "alter Christi," another Christ, to the
world. Through their consecrated priestly hands, they can do two things
that no one else can do on earth: transform bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus,
and through the sacrament of Confession, forgive sin. Because of these supernatural powers, I like to call
priests "Super Men." I am blessed to call one of these "Super Men," my brother. John is a priest for the
Diocese of St. Petersburg and is currently pastor at St. John's Church on St. Pete Beach.
John's call to the priesthood came as a natural progression from what was instilled by our parents: to
know, love and serve Christ and his Church. All of my seven brothers and sisters were involved at church
growing up. My five sisters sang and played music for the choir, and my two bothers and I were altar boys.
I think serving at the altar kindled John's vocation. Living a block from church meant we were always "on
call." We served so many weekend weddings and funerals that we could almost recite Msgr. McCall's
homilies. We had nothing but great experiences with the priests we served, especially Msgr. McCall. He
showed us what it meant to be a holy priest, but more importantly that priests were normal people who had
favorite sports teams [Go Phillies!], loved to laugh, and found great joy in life serving God.
Of course, John and I did more than just hang out at church all the time. We spent endless hours outside
playing basketball, homerun derby, football and fishing with our dad. John was also always very organized
and detailed oriented. He loved working on puzzles and model airplanes. These hobbies attest to his
patience. This patience, along with his other qualities such as piety, kindness, self-sacrifice, humility, and a
quiet self-confidence would be traits he would draw strength from in responding to God's call to become a
priest. John did not run from God's call, he embraced it and entered the seminary straight out of high
school.
John's call did not come accompanied by lightning and thunderbolts from heaven, but it was none-the-
less miraculous. He just always felt that being a priest was the natural thing for him to do, and I can't
imagine my brother doing anything else. I am always awed, humbled and sometimes brought to tears
watching John perform his priestly duties, administer the sacraments, preach, and care for his parishioners.
John responded to God's call to become a priest with unwavering faith and courage and his love for Jesus,
his Church, and the Blessed Mother are a true inspiration for me. John truly is a "Super Man!"

Meditation on the Baptism of Christ
And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water; and lo, the heavens were opened to Him and He saw the Spirit of God descending
as a dove, and coming upon Him. And behold a voice from heaven saying, "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased."
Jesus stoops so low as to mingle with the multitude of sinners, and forthwith the heavens are opened to magnify Him -- He acknowledges
Himself worthy of the strokes of divine justice, and behold, the Father declares that He takes all His delight in Him: Humiliavit semetipsom ...
propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum.
It is at this moment that the mission of Jesus, as One sent by God, is declared authentic. The Father's testimony accredits, so to speak, His Son
before the world, and hence this testimony relates to one of the characters of Christ's work as regards ourselves. The mission of Jesus has a double
aspect: it bears at the same time the character of redemption and of sanctification. It is to redeem souls, and, this done, to infuse life into them. That
is the whole work of the Savior.
