My Dear Friends in Christ,
The Feast of the Epiphany
Merry Christmas!
By longstanding sacred tradition, Christians celebrate Christmas as a season
with the twelve days between Christmas and the Epiphany as one long "Christmas
day." The season ends with the Baptism of the Lord. Christmas celebrations with
friends and family, decorations, and all of the other means of rejoicing, should
continue throughout the season. We can never rejoice in the Lord's birth too
much. As Christians, we will very often find ourselves living in contradiction to the styles and preferences of the
present age. We should get very much used to the fact that we will face conflict among friends, and even at times
within families, as we seek, more generously and more regularly, to live out and celebrate the mysteries of our
redemption in Christ Jesus.
"Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon
you." (Is 60:1) Isaiah the prophet describes the glory of Jesus Christ, who is "full of grace
and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father" (Jn 1:14), our
Messiah. The prophet also foretells the reality of those first three wise men, who represent
the kings and the peoples of the whole earth, all of whom are called to realize their full
dignity as sons and daughters of God in worship and praise of him for his glory and
goodness. "Above you the Lord now rises and above you his glory appears. The nations
come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness." (Is 60:2-3) You and I, and all of
mankind must, like the shepherds, the magi, St. John and the disciples, come before the Lord
in his humble birth at Christmas, and worship him with all of our hearts, minds, souls and strength.
You and I will be seen as acceptable and pleasing to God to the extent that, in Christ, we grow in
our praise and worship of him, generously, with our whole being. How do we praise and worship
God? Christ is our model and our means. Christ has set down through example and precept the ways
in which we live the Christian life.
The ancient "way" of Christian life is repentance and belief in the Gospel, practically and
profoundly realized in the sacramental life. The sacraments are the "Epiphany" or manifestation of
the Lord for every human being. In the sacraments the whole "glory" of Christ "shines out" so that
all nations may fall down in praise before the Lord. Christians, from the first foundation of the
Church, have met and known Christ through the words of forgiveness in Confession: "Go, your sins are forgiven
you." And from the beginning, as we do today, Christians have met Christ in the gift of His body and blood in the
Eucharist, and have fallen down in worship of Him, our God. "This is my body...this is my blood." This is the
greatest of all the sacraments, the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Let us be ever more generous in our expressions of reverential worship of the Lord.
Do we approach Christ at communion with all the reverence, love and
worship due to God? Do we observe appropriate silence in Church so
that a spirit of prayer may be fostered? Are we distracted, or a source
of distraction for others, during Mass? Do we observe the proper
postures and practices of the liturgy? Do we chew gum in Church? Do
we observe the hour-long fast prior to receiving Communion?
We prepare for the joy of heaven, where we will live as the
praise of God's glory forever and ever, by the way we approach the
Lord as he manifests himself in the "Epiphany" which is every Mass.
Praised be Jesus Christ!
Fr. Pecchie
JMJ
Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit in the Virgin Mary's womb because he is the New Adam, who
inaugurates the new creation: `The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from
heaven.' (1 Cor 15:45, 47) From his conception, Christ's humanity is filled with the Holy Spirit, for God
`gives him the Spirit without measure.' (Jn 3:34) From `his fullness' as the head of redeemed humanity `we
have all received, grace upon grace.' (Jn 1:16) (Catechism of the Catholic Church, CCC 504)
First Reading -- Isaiah speaks of the Servant
whom the L
ORD
upholds; he shall bring forth
justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7).
Psalm -- The Lord will bless his people with
peace (Psalm 29).
Second Reading -- Jesus was anointed by
God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing
and doing good (Acts 10:34-38).
Gospel -- A voice comes from heaven
proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with
whom God is well pleased (Matthew 3:13-17).
Am I choosing a new direction for my life?
Is my baptismal commitment being fulfilled?
What am I doing to please God?
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM
The unfolding of the story of the Incarnation continues
today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the
magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of
scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to
expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem
insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we
might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it
is over this seemingly insignificant place that
the guiding star stops in its own search for the
place where the Savior would be born. Too
often we fail to recognize the fact that the star
of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday
lives, where we can experience God's
presence, manifested in ever new ways.
Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and
recognize the One who comes to save us.

Blessing of the Home (done traditionally on the Feast of the Epiphany)
Some communities have the custom of blessing homes while recalling the visit of the Magi.
The household gathers at the manger scene in the home.
All make the Sign of the Cross while the leader begins: "Peace be with this house and with all who live here. Blessed be the name
of the Lord."
All respond: "Now and forever."
Leader: "Listen to the words of the Holy Gospel according to John1:1-3, 14." (or Matthew2:1-12)
All respond: "Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ."
Everyone then processes from one room to another. In each room, God's blessing is asked on all who dwell there.
Each room is blessed with Holy Water. All return to the starting place at the manger scene, and join in reciting the Lord's Prayer.
After a short silence for reflection and personal prayer, the leader continues:
"Lord God of heaven and earth, You revealed Your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house
and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others may reflect Your Love. May we be blessed with
health and goodness of heart. Thanks to You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever."
All respond: "Amen."

piphany, to most of us, means the three
kings. But the term Epiphany means "manifestation"
or "revelation," and traditionally the Feast of the
Epiphany celebrates three revelatory events, the
Magi's visit, the Lord's Baptism, and the Wedding
feast at Cana.
The link is not hard to see. The Magi's homage shows
divinity of this child-king who is to die for his
people. Jesus' baptism in the Jordan reveals a
glimpse of God's inner life as Trinity. And the wedding
feast of Cana reveals the divine power at work in this
carpenter from Nazareth. And it does so smack dab in
the middle of everyday life, at a wedding reception.
This is an excerpt from Dr. Marcellino D'Ambrosia's
article on The Wedding Feast of Cana. To read more
