7TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Fr. Paul Pecchie
ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH
(727) 584-2318 Tel.
Fr. Prakash Madanu, ALCP.

My Dear Friends in Christ,
It is hard to believe that this Wednesday is Ash Wednesday! Our Lenten
observance will begin once again. Next weekend we will begin our Lenten Mission
being lead by Fr. Angelus Shaughnessy, ofm.cap. Father will speak at all the Masses next weekend to
set the theme for the upcoming week.
Also, during the Lenten season we will be using Latin Mass Parts as we did last year. This is an opportunity
for us to become familiar with the Mother Tongue and official language of the Church.
Today, we are having our APA commitment day. Please if you have not already done so, fill out
the envelope and place it in the basket or mail to the diocese. Remember our goal is $117,000.00 and
we are pushing for 100% participation this year.
Many express confusion about reconciling the Lord's counsel to "turn the other cheek" with
bearing arms in self-defense. "But I say to you that hear, `Love your enemies, do good to those who
hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the
other also; and from him who takes away your cloak do not withhold your coat as well.' " (Lk 6, 27-29)
Must we reject all self-defense? Is it wrong for a Christian to choose the military profession? Can we bear
arms in our defense?
The first rule for a Christian is charity, including love for enemies. "In loving our enemies there shines forth in
us some likeness to God our Father, who, by the death of his Son, ransomed from everlasting perdition and
reconciled to himself the human race, which previously was most unfriendly and hostile to him
." (Catechism of the
Council of Trent, IV, 14, 19)
We must be other Christs by our duty to pray for our persecutors, to bless and not curse them. Christ taught
this law when, even from the Cross with his dying breath, he prayed to the Father for his enemies: "Father, forgive
them; for they know not what they do." (Lk 23:34)
Forgiveness and prayer for our enemies does not, however, forbid us from the defense of
innocent human life, in particular that of the weakest and most defenseless among us.
The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against
the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a
double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor...The one is
intended, the other is not." (St. Thomas Aquinas, S. Th. II-II, 64,7, corp. art.)
[CCC 2263]
Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate
to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of
murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow: If a man in self-defense uses more
than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his
defense will be lawful....Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense
to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's. (St.
Thomas Aquinas, S. Th. II-II, 64,7, corp. art.)
[CCC 2264]
Legitimate defense can be not only a right, but a grave duty for someone who is responsible for the
lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to
cause harm. For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to use arms to repel
aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their responsibility.
[CCC 2265]
For those who so choose, who believe that the Lord calls them to a more perfect way of life in this world
which more closely mirrors the peace of the kingdom of heaven, there is the counsel of perfection to practice total
non-violence after the Lord's own example in His Passion and death.
St. Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the Church, taught, "Sacred Scripture needs to be understood in the light of the
example of Christ and the saints. Christ did not offer the other cheek to be struck in the house of Annas (Jn
18:22ff), nor did St. Paul when, as we are told in the Acts of the Apostles, he was beaten in Philippi (Acts 16:22f).
Therefore, we should not take it that Christ literally meant that you should offer the other cheek to someone to hit
you; what he was referring to was your interior disposition; that is, if necessary we should be
ready not to be intolerant of anyone who hurts us: and we should be ready to put up with this
kind of treatment, or worse than that. That was how the Lord acted when he surrendered his body
to death.
" (Commentary on St. John, 18:37)
Praise Be Jesus Christ,

DO NO HARM
We listen quite a while before we get to the "punch line" of
the first reading today: even though it would be an easy thing
to do, David will not harm the anointed one of the Lord. We, of
course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of
God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It
is scripture's way of indicating who has been chosen by God
for a special place and mission in salvation history.
In today's Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of
those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love
instead: our enemies, those who curse us
or do us harm, those who owe us money,
the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of
Jesus' teaching is not to encourage these
kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to
form us in the image of our heavenly
Father by increasing our opportunities to
love unconditionally, expecting no return;
to be merciful and forgiving, even when it
would be easier not to.

St. Peter Damian
St. Peter Damian
St. Peter Damian
St. Peter Damian (1007-1072), bishop and doctor
Feast Day: February 21
St. Peter Damian was a man of many
gifts. He was an excellent teacher
who was sensitive to the needs of the
poor and generous in sharing what he
had. He was a gifted administrator
who was often able to settle disputes
among civil and religious authorities
and a prolific writer of sermons, biog-
raphies, and letters. He embraced an
ascetic personal spirituality and
worked hard to rid the Church of sim-
ony, clerical laxity, and schism. He
was willing to leave the solitary hermit
life he preferred to meet the more pressing needs of the
Church as Bishop, instead. Today's opening prayer in-
cludes a wonderful definition of stewardship as a way of
life: "All powerful God, help us to follow the teachings
and example of Peter Damian. By making Christ and the
service of the Church the first love of our lives,
may we
come to the joys of eternal light, where he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever."
When we have truly made Christ and the service of the
Church the first love of our lives, we too will be on our
way to becoming steward-saints.
Chair of Peter
Chair of Peter
Chair of Peter
Chair of Peter, Apostle (Feast)
Feast Day: February 22
This feast that celebrates the primacy of St. Peter and his
successors as Bishop of Rome, has many implications for
stewardship. First, consider that Peter was given this role
by Christ. The role, itself, is gift, and it is the power of
God acting through him, not the personal strength of Peter
himself, which enables him to function in it. The author-
ity of the office is God's authority. Peter has been en-
trusted with the keys to the kingdom, but he is the steward
only, not the owner or the source, of the power that he
wields. Remember, too, the post-resurrection conversa-
tion that ratified the conferring of this gift on Peter. "Do
you love Me?" Jesus asked. And three times, in response
to Peter's anxious assurance,
Jesus commands, "Feed my
sheep!" The message is clear --
if you love Me, put that love
into action. Use the gifts I have
given you to serve My people.
He asks the same of us. When
we have proclaimed our love
and said "Yes" to the invitation
to follow him, then we must
demonstrate that love by using
all that has been entrusted to us
to love and serve his people.

It's Spring! Plants need fertilizer to grow healthy and
strong and so, too, does your marriage. Without some
nurturing and care, it may fail to reach its potential and
bloom into an exciting and deeply romantic relationship.
Spread a little fertilizer on your relationship. Make a
WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND
and watch your love for each other grow. The next
WWME weekend is March 2-4. To receive information or
a registration brochure, call the Fuhler's at (813) 270-
