My Dear Friends in Christ,
I have been receiving many questions regarding the season of lent and its obligations
so I came up with a Guide to aid you on your Lenten journey. I hope you find it helpful.
A GUIDE FOR LENT
A GUIDE FOR LENT
A GUIDE FOR LENT
A GUIDE FOR LENT
What the Church Says:
The seasons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and each Friday in memory of the
death of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church's penitential practice. Catechism of the Catholic Church,
No. 1438
Fridays, Lent and Year Round -- All Fridays through the year and the time of Lent are penitential days and
times throughout the entire Church." Canon 1250
Fridays during Lent -- In the United States, the tradition of abstaining from meat on each Friday during Lent
is maintained.
Fridays throughout the Year -- In memory of Christ's suffering and death, the Church prescribes making
each Friday throughout the year a penitential day. All of us are urged to prepare appropriately for that weekly Easter
that comes with each Sunday.
Ash Wednesday, Good Friday -- Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions
of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless (nisi) they are solemnities;
abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of the Passion and Death of Our Lord
Jesus Christ. Canon 1251
All persons who have completed their 14th year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the
law of fast up to the beginning of their 60th year. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who
are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance. Canon 1252
It is for the conference of bishops to determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence and to
substitute in whole or in part for fast and abstinence other forms of penance, especially works of charity and
exercises of piety. Canon 1253
"Traditionally, the canonical obligation of fasting has been understood in the Church as the taking of only one
full meal a day."
WHAT TO GIVE UP?

JMJ
FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS
ˇ Do chores without complaining.
ˇ Draw pictures of Holy Week events.
ˇ Restrict your TV, Internet or music
time.
ˇ Restrict your phone time.
ˇ Send a letter or picture to a grandmother, aunt
or Godparent.
ˇ Make a new friend outside your "crowd."
ˇ Be a friend to a shy person.
ˇ Give up that bad place, person or thing.
ˇ Choose a favorite toy, book or piece of clothing
and put it away until Easter.
Fasting
ˇ Fast with one full meal, no snacks one day a week.
ˇ Skip meat an extra day (or two) a week.
ˇ Give up alcoholic beverages.
ˇ Give up coffee (or reduce to one cup a day).
ˇ Give up all desserts.
ˇ Give up all unnecessary shopping.
ˇ Fast from music in the car.
Prayer
ˇ Begin (or begin again) the daily Rosary.
ˇ Meditate for 10 minutes a day (daily meditations can be
found at Catholic.net).
ˇ Choose one extra devotion per week during Lent: Stations
of the Cross, Eucharistic adoration or a weekday Mass.
ˇ Read a book on the Life of Christ. For example:
Alban Goodier's The Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ
Fulton Sheen's The Life of Christ
Frank Sheed's To Know Christ Jesus
Romano Guardini's The Lord
ˇ Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church's 74-page
section on prayer. (Section 4; less than two pages a day!)
Almsgiving/Charity
ˇ Visit a nursing home with your children.
ˇ Forgive someone and patch things up in a visit, or, if
necessary, by phone or letter.
ˇ Give up gossip, judging or profanity.
ˇ Find one "act of forgiveness" to make every day: A
driver who cuts you off, a co-worker who annoys
you, a shopper who cuts in line, a store clerk who is
rude or a family member who ignores your needs.
ˇ Say a kind word to everyone you meet.
ˇ Pay a significant compliment (or more!) to each of
your children every day.
ˇ Offer to watch the children of a new mother one day
a week throughout Lent.
ˇ Visit an elderly friend or relative.
ˇ Save up a significant amount of money for a
deserving charity or apostolate.
Ideas for Adults
First Reading -- When the people
grumbled to Moses for water in the
desert, the L
ORD
heard and brought forth
water from the rock for all to drink
(Exodus 17:3-7).
Psalm -- If today you hear his voice,
harden not your hearts (Psalm 95).
Second Reading -- God's love has been
poured into our hearts through the Holy
Spirit (Romans 5:1-2, 5-8).
Gospel -- Ask, and you will be given
living water so that you will never thirst
again (John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a,
40-42]).
Who are the Samaritans in my life?
Do I listen to their stories
or do I shun them?
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ
THE JOURNEY OF TRANSFIGURATION
"We used to be such good friends. How is it that you've moved so far
away?
" one man asked another. "Perhaps," the other replied, "you have
moved away. By standing still."
This exchange very well could have
happened between Peter and Jesus, had Peter been allowed to erect tents
to stay on the mount of the Transfiguration. He nearly succumbed to the
temptation to stay in a place of wonder and light. But Jesus knew the
hard truth: we are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths
of God's will. It is not good for us to stay in one place on our faith
journey. Equally unhealthy is staying put in times of joy and wonder to
avoid life's difficulties, or to wallow in our trials and temptations and fail
to be companions for our sisters and brothers who are also suffering or
celebrating! The pilgrim Church is required to do one
thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with
Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit,
seeking God's will, helping the reign of God to be
known on earth, being led to the end of our journey,
transfigured for all time into the company of heaven.

SPECIAL MASS for our Homebound with the SACRAMENT OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament for the Living! It is received in the community of the Church as
well as privately in one's home or in the hospital. The purpose of this Sacrament is to pray for the sick
person just as Jesus went about healing and praying for those He met. The ministry of Jesus is continued
through His Priesthood in this beautiful Sacrament. The Sacrament of the Sick may be received by those
who are elderly, by those who are sick, and by those who are facing surgery. We
will have a special Mass on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 11 AM, during
which the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered. Refreshments will be served
after the Mass in Msgr. McCall Hall (Parish Center). We encourage all those who
are eligible for this Sacrament to come and experience the healing power of Christ.
If you know someone who is homebound or in a nursing home, please consider
bringing them to this Holy Mass. All those planning to attend the Mass or intending
to receive the Sacrament of Anointing on this day are asked to fill out the form be-
low and place it in the collection basket at Church or return it to the Rectory.

celebrates the primacy
of St. Peter and his
successors as Bishop
of Rome, has many implications for stewardship.
First, consider that Peter was given this role by
Christ. The role, itself, is gift, and it is the power of
God acting through him, not the personal strength of
Peter himself, which enables him to function in it.
The authority of the office is God's authority. Peter
has been entrusted with the keys to the kingdom, but
he is the steward only, not the owner or the source,
of the power that he wields. Remember, too, the
post-resurrection conversation that ratified the
conferring of this gift on Peter. "Do you love Me?"
Jesus asked. And three times, in response to
Peter's anxious assurance, Jesus commands, "Feed
my sheep!" The message is clear --
if you love Me, put that love into
action. Use the gifts I have given
you to serve My people. He asks
the same of us. When we have
proclaimed our love and said "Yes"
to the invitation to follow him, then
we must demonstrate that love by
using all that has been entrusted to
us to love and serve his people.

PARISH MISSION PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we humbly beseech You to make us more faithful sons and daughters of Your Son's Church.
Help us to be vibrant, knowledgeable Catholics living in the midst of the modern world, so that we may be
beacons of light shining forth in defense of the Church's Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and Magisterium
(her teaching authority). Help us always to cultivate the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity in our daily lives,
so that whether single, married or consecrated priests, deacons or Religious, we may always share Your Truth
with others. We ask this through Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. AMEN.
