My Dear Friends in Christ,
Today we enter into the first Sunday of Lent! During this holy
season we are asked by the Church to intensify our prayer, fasting and
almsgiving. These are the three principal hallmarks of our Lenten observance.
We immerse ourselves in the love of God and we try to better share in this
mystery of God's love for us. As we pray more, fast or long for God by our
physical hunger, and give of our wealth as we recognize God's generosity to us,
we draw closer to the God who loves us and saves us.
"The greatest hunger is the hunger for love." Mother Teresa said this often,
and, after her years of experience living among, feeding, clothing and caring for
the poorest of the poor, she is an expert on human needs. Jesus Christ is that love incarnate for which
every human being has been created. Every human being will satisfy their hunger for God only by
seeking satisfaction in God. Jesus Christ is that bread, truly present among us: the Bread of Life. "The
bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world." And in this Bread alone can our thirst for
love be satisfied.
The Catechism offers a meditation on our Lord's teaching in today's Gospel, and on the petition of the
Lord's Prayer for our "daily bread."
God is love, and we possess the love of God by possessing his life, receiving His Body and Blood in the
Communion of the Mass. "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood,
you have no life in you." With this gift we lack nothing in this world, for infinite love is ours.
Hopefully many will join us in our Gala Celebration. If you are unable to do so continue to watch the
bulletin for more Jubilee Celebrations. As we all know, 50 years only comes once in a lifetime and we
have cause to celebrate, for God has blessed us in abundance.
Also, in the upcoming weeks you will be hearing more about our Capital
Campaign to retire our debt, and to secure a fiscal future that will enable us to thrive as
a parish and not just survive.
Praise Be Jesus Christ!

reakfast for Rose:
Date: TODAY, Sunday, February 10
th
Time: after 7:30, 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.
Masses
Where: Monsignor McCall Hall
Tickets: $6 / Adult and $2 / Children, 12 and under
Menu: French toast or scrambled eggs with toast, bacon or sausages, grits, orange juice, milk & coffee.
This is a special Fundraiser for Rose Petito, who has been battling medical problems.
She has been a leader of the Catholic Charities Pregnancy Center and a member of our Adult Choir.
This petition, with the responsibility it involves, also applies to another hunger from which men are
perishing: `Man does not live on bread alone, but...by every word that proceeds from the mouth of
God,' (Deut 8:3; Mt 4:4) that is by the Word he speaks and the Spirit he breathes forth. Christians must
make every effort "to proclaim the good news to the poor." There is a famine on earth, "not a famine
of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord." (Am 8:11) For this reason the
specifically Christian sense of this fourth petition concerns the Bread of Life: The Word of God
accepted in faith, the Body of Christ received in the Eucharist. (Jn 6:26-58) (CCC 2835)

TEMPTATION'S FACES
In the movie Oh God, You Devil the roles of both God and Satan
were played by George Burns. This completely baffled the humans. But
as "God" pointed out, the face of evil has long tried to look like God,
act like God, sound like God--or at least fulfill all our expectations of
what God is like and desires. This is the aspect of Jesus' human nature
that Satan attempts to prey upon in today's Gospel. It is in our human
nature to seek the easy or surface answers; it was this part of Jesus' true
human nature that was tested in the desert dryness that immediately
followed his plunge into the Jordan's baptismal waters. Our surface
expectations of God are in miracle-working, power and glory, the
intervention of supernatural beings on our behalf. But all of these things
can be accomplished by the might of evil as well.
Jesus takes us deeper and shows us that, even when
we're at our weakest (as he would have been in the
desert after his forty-day ordeal), we need to be
relentless in seeking the true presence of God's
word, giving our worship to God alone, testing
ourselves and not God.

PARISH MISSION PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we humbly beseech You to make us
more faithful sons and daughters of Your Son's Church.
Help us to be vibrant, knowledgeable Catholics living in
the midst of the modern world, so that we may be
beacons of light shining forth in defense of the Church's
Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and Magisterium
(her teaching authority). Help us always to cultivate the virtues
of Faith, Hope and Charity in our daily lives, so that whether
single, married or consecrated priests, deacons or Religious, we
may always share Your Truth with others. We ask this through
Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. AMEN.

PILGRIMAGES:
Pope Benedict XVI has announced that a
plenary indulgence is available to Catholics who travel to Lourdes during the coming year for the 150th anniversary of
the Marian apparitions there. The indulgence is available to those who, under the usual conditions, make a pilgrimage to
Lourdes between December 8, 2007 and December 8, 2008. The pilgrimage should include visits to the famous Massabielle
grotto at Lourdes where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous, the Soubirous family home, and the places
where St. Bernadette was baptized and received her First Communion.
A plenary indulgence is also available to those who venerate an image of Our Lady of Lourdes at any church or chapel
between February 2 and February 11 of 2008, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. For those who are unable to make a
pilgrimage because of ill health or some other reason, the indulgence may be obtained if, under the usual conditions, they
"spiritually visit the above-mentioned places" and offer their prayers on the days February 2 through 11, 2008.
The decree indicates that Pope Benedict wishes to "draw increased fruits of renewed sanctity" from the anniversary
celebrations at Lourdes. It notes "the innumerable series of prodigies through which the supernatural life of souls and the
health of bodies has drawn great advantage from the omnipotent goodness of God" at Lourdes over the years. The usual
conditions for a plenary indulgence are sacramental Confession and reception of Holy Communion within a week, prayer for
the intentions of the Roman Pontiff, and freedom from attachment to sin. The particular terms of the indulgence announced
on December 5:
A) If between December 8, 2007 and December 8, 2008 they visit, preferably in the order suggested: (1) the parish
baptistery used for the Baptism of Bernadette, (2) the Soubirous family home, known as the 'cachot,' (3) the Grotto of
Massabielle, (4) the chapel of the hospice where Bernadette received First Communion, and on each occasion they pause for
an appropriate length of time in prayer and with pious meditations, concluding with the recital of the Our Father, the
Profession of Faith, ... and the jubilee prayer or other Marian invocation.
B) If between February 2, 2008 ... and February 11, 2008, Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lourdes and 150th
anniversary of the apparition, they visit, in any church, grotto or decorous place, the blessed image of that same Virgin of
Lourdes, solemnly exposed for public veneration, and before the image participate in a pious exercise of Marian devotion, or
at least pause for an appropriate space of time in prayer and with pious meditations, concluding with the recital of the Our
Father, the Profession of Faith, ... and the invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

SPECIAL MASS for our Homebound with the SACRAMENT OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament for the Living! It is received in the community of the Church as
well as privately in one's home or in the hospital. The purpose of this Sacrament is to pray for the sick
person just as Jesus went about healing and praying for those He met. The ministry of Jesus is continued
through His Priesthood in this beautiful Sacrament. The Sacrament of the Sick may be received by those
who are elderly, by those who are sick, and by those who are facing surgery. We
will have a special Mass on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 11 AM, during
which the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered. Refreshments will be served
after the Mass in Msgr. McCall Hall (Parish Center). We encourage all those who
are eligible for this Sacrament to come and experience the healing power of Christ.
If you know someone who is homebound or in a nursing home, please consider
bringing them to this Holy Mass. All those planning to attend the Mass or intending
to receive the Sacrament of Anointing on this day are asked to fill out the form be-
low and place it in the collection basket at Church or return it to the Rectory.

St. Methodius (815-885)
Feast Day: February 14
Born in Greece and baptized
Constantine and Michael, St.
Cyril and St. Methodius were
brothers
who
went as
missionaries to the Slavic
people of ninth century
Moravia. Their efforts there
left a lasting legacy in
language and liturgy. St.
Cyril's first task was to invent
an alphabet (the Cyrillic alphabet used in modern
Russian) with which to translate the New Testament,
the Psalms, and the liturgical texts into Slavic.
Clearly "ahead of their time," they also composed a
Slavic liturgy and preached in the vernacular. These
acts of inculturation were criticized by other
missionaries but won them the praise of the Pope,
who named them both bishops. St. Cyril was sickly
and died before he could be ordained a bishop, but
St. Methodius became the papal legate to the Slavic
nations. In the last years of his life, he translated the
whole Bible and other texts into the Slavic language.
These steward saints used their intellectual and
linguistic gifts to help spread the Good News
throughout Eastern Europe and, in doing so, left an
indelible mark on the culture of that region. Great
things happen when we use our gifts for the Lord!
We, the community of
St. Patrick Church
would like to invite you
to worship God with us
in the Holy Sacrifice
of the Mass!
