My Dear Friends in Christ,

It is hard to believe that we are now in February and Lent is almost upon
us. I am very happy to announce that our Parish Mission this Lent will
begin on the weekend of Feb. 24/25 and will continue at 7 p.m. Monday through
Thursday. I am also pleased to announce that this year our Retreat Master will be Fr.
Angelus Shaughnessy, ofm.cap. Fr. Angelus is currently stationed at the Eternal
Word Television Network as Guardian of the friars. We also see him when he
celebrates Mass. We are truly blessed to have him come down and lead us in our
Lenten mission.

Our lives in Christ depend upon an unlimited trust in the Lord following his
words with energy and hope even when his will for us leads into uncharted waters,
when he commands that we "put out into the deep", even those well-plumbed depths which have in the
past yielded up for us only empty nets. Simon Peter responded with weariness, "Master, we toiled all
night and took nothing," when our Lord commanded him, "Put out into the deep and let down your nets
for a catch." (Lk 5, 4-5) He had good reason to believe that, after all of his valiant efforts, he would
come up empty again.
You and I, too, have tried again and again to keep the Lord's commands, and
sometimes have failed. We also respond sometimes with weariness when he
reminds us to keep all the things that he has commanded. We, too, wish
sometimes to persuade him to release us from the burdens of commitment, of
thankless labor, of frightening and overwhelming situations. Peter, though
wearied with trying, says a remarkable thing, for even after complaining
hesitation, he responds with the divine power of faith: "But at your word I will let
down the nets.
" (Lk 5, 5) He responds in obedience and trust, though he had no
earthly reason to believe his efforts would be crowned with success.
Peter's faith and trust is rewarded with the miraculous draught of fishes. In awe at his encounter
with the mysterious presence of the living God, he falls down in worship before Jesus, exclaiming,
"Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." (Lk 5, 8) He is unworthy before the thrice-holy God
perfectly revealed in Jesus Christ.
Though we never refuse the grace of Confession and absolution when conscious of serious sin, we
are yet aware that we must ever depend upon regular reception of the Lord's Body and Blood for the
forgiveness of our venial sins. Face to face with the glorious presence of our divine Lord in the
Eucharist, we too are in awe before his majesty, and can approach him only with these
words: "Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum. Sed tantum dic verbo, et
sanabitur anima mea. O Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,
but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
" (literal translation from the Latin).

We have received our new Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA) for this coming year,
which is $117,000.00. I would ask that you keep this goal in prayer as you discern how
much you can give towards this goal. In years, past we have had less than 40%
participation. Wouldn't it be great if we could have 100% this year? Remember as you
enter into sacrificial giving of tithing to the Lord of 10%, that 4% goes to offertory, 1 %
to the APA and 5 % to other charities. I thank you for your sacrificial giving and I ask
you to take the leap of Faith and trust in the Lord's Providence. He will not be outdone
in generosity!
Praised be Jesus Christ,
Fr. Pecchie

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!
"Holy, holy, holy!" Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used
in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express
superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was
"holiest," so he used the threefold repetition of the same word.
This bit of scriptural minutiae about these "three little words" that
we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering
God's call has to be grounded in awareness of God's holiness.
In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of
the revelation of God's power and might: the seraphim in the
temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not
wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a
response in mission, Isaiah's "Here I
am, send me!" and the disciples'
leaving everything to follow Jesus.
And so must our own "Holy, Holy,
Holy!" lead us to Christ in the Eucharist
every Sunday, and to a life following
him day by day.

Dear St. Patrick Parishioners,
What a surprise it was for me to be given such recognition and honor by our parish community. For this I thank
Fr. Pecchie and Fr. Prakash, all of you, the principal of the school, the staff and the students. Thanks for all the
cards, letters, food, songs and gifts you gave me on my Silver Jubilee and especially for your prayers.
I also thank my fellow sisters from my congregation and the Sisters of the Handmaid of the Child Jesus from
Bishop Larkin School in Port Richey for their contribution on this celebration. It was my acknowledgement of my
vocation as a religious woman for the past 25 years. My hope is that there will be some young boys and girls form St.
Patrick who will, in the future, join religious life as a priest or sister.
Once again thank you for your generosity. You are all remembered in our prayers. Please continue to pray for
me and for my community that God will keep us always close to him and that he will call many young women to give
themselves to him in our community.
~ God bless you all, Sr. Ezekiel Mrukwamba, CDNK.

St. Paul Miki and companions (Died 1597)
Feast Day: February 6
St. Paul Miki was martyred in Japan
in 1597 with 25 companions. He was
a very successful Jesuit preacher,
and his companions came from every
walk of life - "priests, brothers and lay-
men, Franciscans, Jesuits and mem-
bers of the Third Order of St. Francis;
there were catechists, doctors, simple
artisans and servants, old men and
innocent children." All were marched from Meako to
Nagasaki, a month-long journey by foot, to be cruci-
fied. Even from the cross, St. Paul Miki kept preach-
ing and evangelizing, saying, "My religion teaches
me to pardon my enemies and all who have of-
fended me. I do gladly pardon the Emperor and all
who have sought my death. I beg them to seek bap-
tism and be Christians themselves." St. Paul Miki,
pray for us that we, too, may be good stewards of
the faith entrusted to us, readily forgiving those who
harm us and enduring with patience the little
"crucifixion of self" to which we are called every day.

St. Scholastica (480-547)
Patron Saint of convulsive children, nuns, storms
Feast Day: February 10
St. Scholastica was born in Italy, the
twin sister of St. Benedict, founder of
the Benedictines. She was conse-
crated to God "from her earliest
years," and when her brother
founded the monastery at Monte
Cassino, she founded a similar reli-
gious community for women nearby.
The twins remained very close, both
intensely interested in pursuing the
religious life. One commentator
says, "They sacrificed some of the opportunities they
would have had to be together as brother and sister
in order to fulfill their vocation to the religious life. In
coming closer to Christ, however, they found they
were also closer to each other. In joining a religious
community, they did not forget or forsake their fam-
ily, but rather found more brothers and sisters." That
should come as no surprise, though, for the Lord
who has given us all things has promised to multiply
those blessings when we sacrifice them in his ser-
vice: "And everyone who has given up houses or
brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or
lands for the sake of my name will inherit a hundred
times more, and will inherit eternal life" (Mt 19:29).
