My Dear Friends in Christ,
Blessed are those who weep,
they shall be comforted.
Do you remember when Jesus said, "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that
kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it? How often have I
desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under
her wings, and you were not willing?" Jesus wept over Jerusalem because
the center of God's chosen people refused to recognize the presence of the Messiah. He wept over
Jerusalem because the people there were more concerned with their possessions and
their lives than with the presence of God among them. He wept over Jerusalem
because the people thought they were self sufficient. He wept over Jerusalem because
he could see the destruction their own actions were bringing on themselves.
This is the reason why the Church has an active role in encouraging morality
in our nation. When we see that our public policy is immoral, we weep over the
destruction our actions are bringing upon ourselves. The Church stands for morality because it weeps
over what the country is doing to itself. So to the many people, both within and outside of the Church,
who ask, "Why does the Church make a statement which has to do with the laws of our country?" We
have to answer, "We do this because we love our country and we weep over what our country is doing to
itself."
Some will inevitably go on to say, "There is a separation between Church and state, so let the
Church be quiet." I'm sure you have been faced with this statement or those like it. Historically, and
please let us get this right, or all else is lost. The Separation between Church and state meant that there
would be no official Church in the USA; no one would be forced to go to Church.
Without demanding adherence to a particular religion, the founding fathers recognized the need for
God's guidance in the country and put the words "In God We Trust" on our coins. I believe it was in our
own century that the words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance. The separation of
Church and State has nothing to do with the need of the Founding Fathers and the Country to seek God's
guidance for the nation.
Jesus wept over Jerusalem because he could see the destruction the actions of the people were
bringing on themselves. We, in the Church, weep for our country over those areas that are leading the
country to moral decay. Therefore, we speak out.
Blessed are those who mourn, for we shall be comforted.
Praised be Jesus Christ!
Fr. Pecchie
It is hard to believe that this Wednesday begins our Lenten observance. One way in which I would like to
challenge you this year is to attend daily Mass. This year we will have the 7:30 AM and the 9 AM Mass
each morning in order to make it more convenient to attend Mass. We follow the command "pick up
your cross and follow me." Let us use this time wisely in drawing closer to the Lord.

First Reading -- The man and the woman
ate the fruit of the one tree that God had
told them to avoid, and their shame
overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7).
Psalm -- Be merciful, O Lord, for we
have sinned (Psalm 51).
Second Reading -- Death reigned from
Adam to Moses, but now grace and life
abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19).
Gospel -- Jesus was led into the desert by
the Spirit and there he fasted for forty
days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11).
Do I recognize my temptations as Jesus
did while in the desert? What actions am I
taking to resist those temptations?
How can I use these 40 days and ask for
Jesus' assistance?

Sharing our Faith in Christ
THE CHOSEN REMNANT
Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets.
He speaks in today's first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord
will leave a "remnant" in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder,
was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity.
Paul's letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the
Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of
themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them
all they have.
Today's Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus' "Great Sermon." As
God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now
Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to
teach them the new law. Each of these
Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the
present with the glory of the future: poverty
vs. the riches of God's kingdom, hunger for
holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit,
persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is
here speaking to God's chosen "remnant."
