Father in heaven, the day draws near
when the glory of your Son will make radiant
the night of the waiting world.
May the lure of greed not impede us from the joy
which moves the hearts of those who seek him.
May the darkness not blind us to the vision of wisdom
which fills the minds of those who find him.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Fr. Prakash Madanu, ALCP.
2121 - 16th Avenue SW, Largo, FL 33770

My Dear Friends in Christ,
Our Holy Father has given us an early Christmas present. He has
written an encyclical letter titled "Spe Salvi" in hope we are saved. (Rom
8:24) We live in a world of so much hopelessness, despair and depression.
It is important to ask, "What is the basis for our hope?" Why do we hope?
People can use the word hope in a lot of different ways: "I hope that I get a
certain present for Christmas. I hope that my candidate wins the election. I hope
that scientists will find a cure for Alzheimer's disease." We all have different hopes, but what does it
mean to have Christian hope?
Pope Benedict uses a striking example to illustrate the meaning of Christian hope. He
tells about an African girl named Josephine Bakhita. When she was about nine years old,
slave traders kidnapped her and sold her in the slave markets of Sudan. The wife of a
general bought her and treated her cruelly. She was flogged so often that for her entire life
she had 144 scars on her body. Eventually an Italian merchant bought her and she found
herself in a family that treated her kindly and introduced her to the God of Jesus Christ.
She discovered what it means to be a free child of God. She said, "I am definitively loved
and whatever happens to me I am awaited by this Love. And so my life is good." This,
says Pope Benedict, is Christian hope. It is not just the thought that things might get better but that no
matter what happens, a person knows that God loves him and that God awaits him.
We are so used to hearing that God loves us that it doesn't register anymore. "OK, God loves me.
That's nice." That was not the case for Josephine Bakhita. She went from being unloved, a mere
commodity, to the realization that she was loved in a radical and definitive way. You may wonder what
happened to her after this realization. On December 8, 1896, Josephine Bakhita took vows as a religious
sister. For the next fifty years she served various roles in her community.
She became known for her gentleness, calming voice and ever-present smile.
The mother superior noticed her sanctity and instructed her to write about
her experiences. She began giving talks which made her famous throughout
Italy.
Sickness and pain racked her final years. The extremity of her last days
drew her mind back to the years of slavery. In her delirium she cried out,
"Please, loosen the chains...they are so heavy." God did free her from her
chains. She met the Love that awaited her. On February 8, 1947 Josephine
Bakhita gave herself into the hands of God. Calls for her canonization
began immediately. In 1992 Pope John Paul declared her Blessed and in the year 2000, he canonized
her. A modern African saint, Josephine Bakhita illustrates the depths of Christian hope and how
Christian hope can transform a person's life.
St. Paul tells us today that everything written in the Scriptures is so that we might have hope. By
hope we become new men and women. In hope we are saved. To live our lives, we need hope. To
encourage our young people, we need to be able to explain our hope. How beautiful it would be if we
could appreciate the experience of St. Josephine Bakhita: "I am definitively loved and whatever happens
to me I am awaited by this Love. And so my life is good."
Come Lord Jesus, Come!
Fr. Pecchie
p.s. I hope you have all marked your calendars to come to
The Christmas Offering on Friday, December 14th, or
Saturday, December 15th, for our Christmas play. Join us as
we prepare for the coming of Christ in this presentation of Drama, Song and Dance.
JMJ
First Reading -- The barren deserts will
rejoice and flower. Tired bodies will
receive strength. Aching hearts will be
made glad (Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10).
Psalm -- Lord, come and save us (Psalm
146).
Second Reading -- Be patient, for the
coming of the Lord is as sure as the rain
(James 5:7-10).
Gospel -- Tell of what you hear and see: The
blind regain their vision, the crippled their
movement, the deaf their hearing. The dead
are raised to new life! (Matthew 11:2-11).
What do I hope for especially at this
time of year? Do I bring the Good
News of Jesus to the poor and suffering?
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
PREPARE THE WAY
Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters
its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey,
John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance
in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of
the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the
Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him
pointing to the one who is coming after him,
the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and
actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our
hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful
traps again and again. Advent gives us the
opportunity once again to turn away from our
sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of
life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the
way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope.

The Pastoral Council is a community of servant
leaders whose purpose is to assist the pastor in
discerning, through prayer and study, how the
parish can best carry out the mission of the
Church. Pastoral councils are called to model the
unity of the Body of Christ. Councils should be
representative of the diversity of the parish
community, yet united in carrying out the one
mission of the Church.

LATE NITE CATECHISM
Saturday, January 5 at 7:30 PM
The Conmy Center at Our Lady of Lourdes
Late Nite Catechism is an uproarious piece of theater
that takes audience members back - sometimes nos-
talgically, sometimes fearfully - to the children they
once were. The irrepressible Sister teaches an adult
catechism class to a roomful of "students" (the audi-
ence). Over the course of the play, Sister goes from
benevolent instructor, rewarding the "students" for cor-
rect answers with souvenirs, to authoritative drill ser-
geant. Audiences love her and it's a lesson you won't
soon forget! Tickets are on sale. General seating $35
doors opening at 7 pm - Saintly Seating with wine &
cheese $50 doors opening at 6 pm. Box office hours 9
am - 5 pm weekdays the parish office and 8 am - 1 pm
Sundays at the Conmy Center. For your convenience
we are able to accept credit cards over the phone or in
person. Any questions, please call 733-3606 x 270.

Why were we created male and female? Where do we come
from and why? What is the meaning of life? How do we ex-
perience it? In the words of Pope John Paul II, "if we live
according to the meaning of our sexuality, we fulfill the very
meaning of our being and existence." Many people think
they understand what the church teaches about the body
and the relationship between man and woman. However,
the deeper reasons the WHY of these teachings are NOT
well understood. The human body is meant to be a sign of
God's own life and love in the world. Join Christopher West
for a thought provoking presentation that will enrich your un-
derstanding of human sexuality and the spiritual power it
contains. Visit

als. For more information, contact Nanci-Beth Rollman at
531-7721 ext. 122. Space is limited!
We, the community of
