20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,

Don't Panic! I am sure that if you did not read my letter last week, coming into the
Church was quite a surprise! A smaller portrait of the mural will be coming so that
all those that were attached to the mural will still be able to see it. Through the
generosity of a family of our parish a Crucifix has been attained and we are waiting for
delivery. The Cross is 8 feet in height and the Corpus is 6 feet. What adds to the beauty of the
crucifix is that it has been recovered from an older Church that has closed. It is a beautiful
antique that is close to 90 years old. It will really remind us of the sacrifice that Jesus made for
love of us.
I recently received this in an email and although it is humorous it hammers home a powerful point the dignity
and the reverence due to the Holy Mass:
ˇ
BRITNEY SPEARS CONCERT CANCELLED! Unfortunately, our efforts to get
pop sensation Britney Spears to perform a benefit fundraiser for the parish have proven
unsuccessful. Her calendar is full. Therefore, those who have been arriving at Mass
every Sunday dressed for a Britney Spears concert should know that they don't have to
do that anymore. Modest church-going attire will do nicely. We will notify you if the
situation changes.
ˇ
PLANS FOR PARISH SWIMMING POOL SCRAPPED! After much study, our finance committee
has determined it would not be feasible to construct an indoor swimming pool in our church. As a
result, we can now announce with certainty that those who have been arriving for Mass as if dressed for
the pool need not do so. Also, we hope to keep the air conditioning cranking all
summer long. So you do not need to wear shorts, halter tops or bikinis to Mass.
ˇ
FAULTY ALARM CLOCKS POSE DANGER! An exclusive parish investigation
has uncovered a new danger facing our parishioners: people who enter the church 15
minutes after Mass has started, and attempt to find a seat by climbing over the rope strung
across the aisle. This can result in falls or -- in some cases -- embarrassing displays of
underwear. Experts recommend that all Catholics check their alarm clocks every night to
make sure they are working, so that they can arrive at Mass on time.
ˇ
CELL PHONES CAUSE HEAD INJURIES! New research indicates that people who
bring cell phones to church are more likely to suffer serious head trauma, usually caused by
the priest throwing the lectionary at them. Such people are also more likely to be wounded by
hurled umbrellas and rolled up missals. We care about our parishioners. As a public service, then, we
are advising all to leave cell phones at home or, failing that, to flick the switch to "vibrate."
Medical experts say it will lead to a longer, healthier life. There is also anecdotal evidence
that such precautions will keep your neighbors in the pews from digging their nails into your
hand during the "sign of peace."
ˇ
MUNCHIES AT MASS? Rampant rumors persist that the parish is
planning to institute a mid-Mass picnic every Sunday. This has led some
parishioners to arrive at church with water bottles, chewing gum, yogurt, animal
crackers, sandwiches and the occasional box of candy. Rest assured: the only food we
will be serving will be of the spiritual kind, at the usual time, at the usual place --
during communion. Don't worry about bringing anything else. We have all you'll need
right here. Just BYOS: Bring Your Own Soul.
As we prepare for our Jubilee we are looking for all original families that are still part of St.
Patrick to gather for a picture to be included in our history. If you are an original member or
know of one still in the parish please call the office so we can organize the
photo. Let us continue to pray for our parish and the community of faith
we have been and continue to be throughout these 50 years and beyond.
Praised be Jesus Christ!

First Reading -- I come to gather nations
of every language; they shall come and
see my glory (Isaiah 66:18-21).
Psalm -- Go out to all the world and tell
the Good News (Psalm 117).
Second Reading -- Strengthen your
drooping hands and your weak knees
(Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13).
Gospel -- People will come from the east
and the west, from the north and the
south, and will recline at table in the
kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30).
Do I welcome all God's children,
including sinners and those
I consider difficult to accept?
Am I sincere in being truly repentant of my
sins, acknowledging my imperfections?
Readings Ahead:
August 26, 2007
21st Sunday
in Ordinary Time
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP
Today's responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the
refrain "Here am I, Lord." This "Here am I" is Jeremiah's great
prophetic response to God's call. But today's story of Jeremiah and the
refrain "Lord, come to my aid!" remind us that there are always two sides
to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews
knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with
burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on
Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw
beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God.
Jesus himself gave the disciples a "sneak preview" of a baptism that
would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his
ministry, but would be one of fire and
anguish. Today's words from scripture
may not be terribly soothing, but in
their honesty and strength we can
acknowledge the difficulties of daily
discipleship, and take comfort in the
assurance of our own salvation in
Christ.

Queenship of Mary
Feast Day: August 22
This feast of the Virgin Mary
was established in 1954, by
Pope Pius XII, but its roots and
celebration reach way back in
Church history. St. Ephrem
(June 8), Christian poet and
hymn writer, extolled Mary as
queen in the fourth century and that title has been used
by believers ever since. Hymns from the early Middle
Ages hail her as "Queen of Heaven" and "Holy Queen"
and "Queen of Angels." St. Amadeus of Lausanne
explained in a homily, "When the Virgin of virgins was
led forth by God and her Son, the King of kings, amid
the company of exulting angels and rejoicing
archangels, with the heavens ringing with praise, the
prophecy of the psalmist was fulfilled, in which he said
to the Lord: At your right hand stands the queen, clothed
in gold ..." Mary's willingness to say "Yes" to the Lord
brought her joy and sorrow and ultimately a crown of
glory. God will use -- and reward -- us, too, if we let him.

St. Bartholomew
St. Bartholomew, Apostle
Patron Saint of bookbinders, cobblers, nervous diseases
Feast Day: August 24
St. Bartholomew was born in Cana
and was one of the 12 apostles.
Scholars think he was the one called
Nathanael who was brought to Jesus
by Philip. It is not known for certain
where he went to spread the Gospel
after the resurrection, but some
ancient sources suggest that he may
have preached in India and been
martyred in Armenia. What is certain
is that he gave his whole life to Jesus
when the Lord called him. And how filled with the power
of the Holy Spirit he and the other apostles must have
been to set out on those evangelizing journeys! St.
John Chrysostom writes, "How otherwise could 12
uneducated men, who lived on lakes and rivers and
wastelands, get the idea for such an immense
enterprise? How could men who perhaps had never
been to a city witness to the whole world?" St.
Bartholomew, pray for us that we, too, may answer
when Christ calls. And by the power of the Holy
Spirit, may we generously use in his service the
gifts we have.
