19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
My Dear Friends in Christ,
This week I would like to address another document that came out of the
Vatican. "Responses to Some Questions Regarding Certain Aspects of the
Doctrine of the Church"
was published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of
the Faith on June 29, the Feast of Ss. Peter and Paul. In a series of five questions and
answers, it explains the nature of the Catholic Church and how it relates to other Christian
communities. In so doing, it reaffirms what the Catholic Church has always taught, and
should therefore neither be surprising nor scandalous. However, like so many other
truths of our faith, there is a tendency for some to emphasize one aspect of the Church's
teaching to exclusion of others, thus resulting in confusion or error. In other words, there
is nothing new here, merely an explanation of what we already believe in order to alleviate
confusion. The document is readily available on the internet at www.ewtn.com or www.vatican.va.
In clarifying the nature of the Church, the document includes two ideas that may seem at first
paradoxical. First of all, the document was intended to respond to some theological errors, which in recent years
and in various ways have denied the uniqueness of the Catholic Church. It therefore reaffirms that the Church
established by Jesus Christ is a visible, spiritual community and only the Catholic Church possesses the "fullness
of grace and truth" that Christ desires for it. Secondly, it explains that "the Church of Christ is present and
operative in the churches and ecclesial communities not yet fully in communion with the Catholic Church, on
account of the elements of sanctification and truth that are present in them." Several misleading news reports,
unfortunately left out this affirmation of non-Catholic Christian communities, giving some the impression that
Catholics are to believe that outside the Church there is merely a "churchless void."
While non-Catholic Christians may not agree with the document's assertions, some have noted that honesty
and clarity is favorable to fruitful dialogue between the Church and other Christian communities. The Catholic
Church's differences with many Christian communities are closely associated with the Eucharist, which is
dependent on the sacramental priesthood and apostolic succession. Interestingly, at the same time, the Eucharist
is also the foundation of the Church's unity. As the "source and summit" of our life and mission, the Eucharist
is indispensable to the identity of the Church, to which all are ultimately called. Indeed, both the Second Vatican
Council and Pope John Paul II's 1995 Encyclical "Ut unum sint" declared that non-Catholic Christians are oriented
towards "a complete incorporation into the system of salvation such as Christ Himself willed it to be, and finally,
towards a complete participation in Eucharistic communion."
On another note, it is hard to believe that this Wednesday, August 15, besides being a holy day of obligation, is
also the start of a new school year as we welcome back our teachers this day. Please pray for the faculty and staff
for an outpouring of God's blessings upon this new school year! Please pray for Sr. Veronica, SSND who,
although not new to us, will be taking on a new role as our school Principal/Administrator. We are blessed and
grateful for her willingness to share with us her many years of experience in Education and Leadership for her
community schools. Since she has been on the Administration team of the school over the past four years, she is
the excellent choice to continue building on the many accomplishments we have in making our School an
outstanding institution of CATHOLIC education. Our School year will begin officially with an
opening Mass on August 19th at 2 PM. All are welcome to attend. Pray, too, for me who will be
teaching an elective in Latin for the Middle School students this academic year!
As you hopefully have noticed we are continuing to get our Church ready for our 50th
Anniversary. The inside front of the Church has started to be painted and the measurements for the
wood niche for the restored original Tabernacle have been taken and the work has begun. The wood
casing will mirror the wooden niches for the statues in the front of the Church so that the front of the
Church will be all unified. Some other improvements will also be made. The Crucifix will be hung over the Altar
and the current Crucifix alcove will become a place for the enthronement of the Word. In this way, we will see
clearly, by the architecture within our Church, the importance of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the
Eucharist. As the Crucifix hangs, it will be necessary to change the size and the position of the Emmaus Mural
(painting on the back wall of the Church). The Mural will be removed from its current location and a smaller
version will be placed on the side of the Church wall above where the old confessionals used to be. The long-term
plan will be to move the choir from behind the sanctuary to the St. Joseph side of the Church. This will prevent
the congregation from being distracted by what the choir is doing while all are to be focused on the saving event
taking place on the Altar itself. As I am aware that a few of these changes will be difficult for some, however, we
must remember that we have existed for 50 years and have seen many changes in our church. We have much more
to do in spreading the Good News of our Salvation for the years to come. Let us pray that we will be open to the
current changes and give thanks to God for allowing us the ability to gather and worship Him in this house of God.
Praised Be Jesus Christ!

OUR FATHER IN FAITH
The Letter to the Hebrews today sings a hymn of praise to Abraham
and to his faith, upon which are founded the religions of Judaism,
Christianity, and Islam. Abraham is called "father" in faith by more
people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore
or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith
that led Abraham to obey God's call when he heard it, though he was
called to journey to a land he did not know and
told he would father a mighty race through a
marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham's
faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his
realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence
of what he could not see. How often are we, in
simple daily events of our own Christian vocation,
called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do
something we do not believe we can? How
fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our
guide and example!

The Feast of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary
Wednesday, August 15th
This Feast is a Holy Day of Obligation
in the Church this year.
Mass Schedule is as follows:
Tuesday Vigil Mass: 4:30 PM
Wednesday: 7:30 & 9 AM & 6:30 PM
This day celebrates the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into
heaven. It is the perfect conclusion to what was begun with the
Immaculate Conception. It has been said,
"The glorification of Mary is
therefore the crowning of her journey of faith and singular grace; it is
the feast of her predestination to eternal happiness in glory.
"
When
Pope Pius XII proclaimed as dogma this long-held belief of the church,
he quoted St. John Damascene,
"It was necessary that she who had
preserved her virginity inviolate in childbirth should also have her body
kept free from all corruption after death. It was necessary that she who
carried the Creator as a child on her breast should dwell in the
tabernacles of God . . . It was necessary that the Mother of God should
share the possessions of the Mother and handmaid of God.
"
In his letter
to the Philippians, St. Paul assured them
"... that the one who began a
good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ
Jesus"
(Phil 1:6). With the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary we
are given both proof that this is so and a powerful intercessor in heaven
who knows the cost and the blessings of saying "Yes!" to the Lord.
Holy Mary, all generations call you blessed; the Lord has done great
things for you.

St. Stephen of Hungary
St. Stephen of Hungary
St. Stephen of Hungary
St. Stephen of Hungary (969-1038)
Feast Day: August 16
St. Stephen is a Hungarian national
hero as well as a saint. He
est ablished Hung ary as an
independent nation and was
crowned its first king on Christmas
Day, 1000. He actively sought to Christianize his
country by inviting the French Benedictines to help him
evangelize and by building numerous churches and
monasteries. Because of these efforts to spread the
faith, the pope gave him the title of "Apostolic King," and
he was respected as a just, peaceful, and pious ruler to
whom even the poor had ready access. In a letter to his
son, he describes the necessity for good stewardship of
the Church. Describing the Church in Hungary as
"young and newly planted," he said that it required
"more prudent and trustworthy guardians lest a benefit
which the divine mercy bestowed on us undeservedly
should be destroyed and annihilated through your
idleness, indolence, or neglect." Although St. Stephen
was speaking specifically about the Church, the same
good advice applies to all the gifts we have received
from God. All have been freely given and must be used
wisely and responsibly.
St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe
St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe
St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe
St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe (1894-1941)
Feast Day: August 14
If good stewardship is defined by the
willingness to surrender all we have
and are to the Lord from whom it all
came and to whom it all rightly
belongs, St. Maximilian Kolbe was an
exemplary steward. A Polish priest,
devoted to Mary Immaculate, he was
arrested by the Nazis during World
War II and taken to the death camp at Auschwitz. One
day, after the escape of a prisoner, the prison guards
chose ten men to die in retribution. Knowing that one of
the men selected had a wife and children, St. Maximilian
offered to take his place. "No one has greater love than
this, to lay down one's life for one's friends," Jesus said,
and by his selfless offer to take the place of that
condemned man, St. Maximilian Kolbe demonstrated
that love. Most of us will never be asked to make so
great a sacrifice. Nevertheless, this feast day prompts
us to ask ourselves, "Of God's gifts to me of life and
time, of abilities and material goods, which would I be
willing to sacrifice for the love of God and others?"
