Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
My Dear Friends in Christ,
This week we welcome back our teachers and staff for our new school year! We are
blessed to have so many talented and dedicated teachers and staff. Next Sunday at the 11
AM Mass, our entire school body will be present to begin our school year with a
dedication to Almighty God. In this challenging time for Catholic Education, I hope all of our
parish family sees the blessing that having a school is for the life of the parish community.
At the beginning of today's Gospel, St. Matthew tells us that Jesus went up into the hills by himself to pray.
He had just finished a very long day teaching the crowds, healing the sick, and performing the
miracle of the multiplication of the loaves.
At the beginning of that day he had received the news about John the Baptist's death.
At the time, he had wanted to go off alone to reflect, pray, and mourn the loss of that great
prophet, who was also Christ's cousin.
But the crowds wouldn't let him.
But now we see that although he delayed his time of prayer out of compassion for the crowds, he
didn't skip it altogether, even though he must have been exhausted.
Now as the sun sets, he climbs up the mountain to pray.
And he doesn't appear again until about 3 o'clock in the morning - six hours later.
We know from other Gospel passages that Jesus frequently went off alone to pray. On hearing this, we ponder, "Isn't
that kind of strange?"
Jesus was God true God from true God, as we profess in the Creed.
So, why would he have to dedicate large chunks of time to pray?
Because he was also true man the Word made flesh, born of the Virgin Mary.
Jesus had two natures, divine and human.
And because he was human, he needed to pray.
Human nature is not meant to go it alone.
As the Catechism tells us, "Man was created to live in communion with God, in whom he
finds happiness." And no one can have communion with God without a life of prayer.
Today, Jesus is teaching us to keep first things first; if He, Who is the Son of God, needed time
alone in prayer, only an arrogant fool would claim not to need some.
Most of us don't live in monasteries, so what can we do to make sure our prayer life keeps
growing, to make sure that we pray better at age 40 or 50 than we did at age 10?
Jesus himself has given us a secret weapon for growth in prayer: the Eucharist.
Prayer is spending time with God, speaking to him about what matters to us and what matters to him.
And the Eucharist is the real presence of Christ body, blood, soul, and divinity.
In the hustle and bustle of our busy, twenty-first century lives, we need a time and place where we can be sure to find
Christ 24/7 something that is objective, not dependent on our moods or feelings.
That is the Eucharist: the rock-solid foundation for a healthy life of prayer.
When we receive Holy Communion,
when we gaze upon the Host at Mass,
when we come and kneel before the Tabernacle containing the Sacred species,
or when we pray in adoration before the Eucharist solemnly exposed here every Wednesday,
...we are doing what Peter did as he stepped out of that fishing boat: fixing our gaze on Christ
the Lord, cultivating our personal relationship with him praying to the one whose love and
grace gives meaning, direction, and strength to our lives.
This miracle of Jesus walking on the water takes place right after the miracle of the
multiplication of the loaves.
The two miracles have to do with bread and with Christ's body just like the Eucharist!
Today, as Christ recommits himself to us in this Mass, let us recommit ourselves to a healthy life of prayer.
Let us promise him that we will never let a day go by without coming to visit him, to speak with
him heart-to-heart in the Eucharist, even if only for a minute, so that he can keep deepening our
soul's communion with God, in whom alone we find happiness.
Praised be Jesus Christ!
Fr. Pecchie
PS August 15, 2008, is a holyday of obligation! Please consult bulletin for Mass times. There will
be an additional Mass on the holy day at 7:30 PM. This Mass will be celebrated in the Tridentine
Rite (A Mass celebrated in the manner prior to the second Vatican Council in Latin with the priest
leading the prayers in the direction of the people).

:
"Stand firm in justice; do what is

Psalm O God, let all the nations

Second Reading The gifts and the
calling of God are unable to be

Gospel Recognizing the woman's

as you wish" (Matthew 15:21-28).
Do I respond like Christ to those

in our society? Am I praying for

We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ
NOTHING TO FEAR
A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives.
"Because God gets lonely for his people" was the reply. There is some
resonance with this wisdom in today's Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples
get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into
stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the
Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some
truth in the statement that we don't turn to God for saving help until we're in
a bind. Peter's role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a
sign or to represent each member of the
church and the whole church. Our story is
the tale told about Peter's faith today.
What can bolster our faith is that even
when Christ calls us to face bravely the
tempests of life, if we are walking through
them with our eyes fixed on him in faith,
we have nothing to fear. Even when we
falter or sink, simply crying "Lord, save
me!" is enough to help us know the steady
grasp of God's hand. Then, sheltered
inside the walls of faith, the storms we
endure lose their power over us.

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Friday, August 15th
This Feast is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Church this year.
Mass Schedule is as follows:
Thursday Vigil Mass: ........................................................................... 4:30 PM
Friday: ........... 8 AM & 10 AM & 6:30 PM and the Tridentine Mass at 7:30 PM
This day celebrates the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. It is the
perfect conclusion to what was begun with the Immaculate Conception. It has been
said,
"The glorification of Mary is therefore the crowning of her journey of faith and
singular grace; it is the feast of her predestination to eternal happiness in glory."
When Pope Pius XII proclaimed as dogma this long-held belief of the church, he quoted
St. John Damascene,
"It was necessary that she who had preserved her virginity
inviolate in childbirth should also have her body kept free from all corruption after
death. It was necessary that she who carried the Creator as a child on her breast should dwell in the tabernacles of
God . . . It was necessary that the Mother of God should share the possessions of the Mother and handmaid of God."
In his letter to the Philippians, St. Paul assured them
"... that the one who began a good work in you will continue to
complete it until the day of Christ Jesus"
(Phil 1:6). With the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary we are given
both proof that this is so and a powerful intercessor in heaven who knows the cost and the blessings of saying "Yes!"
to the Lord. Holy Mary, all generations call you blessed; the Lord has done great things for you.

away at night to join St. Francis and his small band of Franciscans. She and her sister,
Agnes, were the first members of the Second Order of St. Francis, later known as the
Poor Clares. They lived a simple life of great poverty and almost complete silence in a
house adjacent to San Damiano. St. Francis named St. Clare the first abbess of the
Order, an office she held for the rest of her life. She was much admired for her simplicity and piety, and
bishops, cardinals, and even popes came to consult her. So revered was she, that she was canonized just
two years after her death. She renounced almost all of the "creature comforts" we take for granted and
devoted herself to service and prayer. Few of us may find ourselves called to sacrifice so much, but all can
find an inspiring example in the committed simplicity of the good steward. St. Clare, pray for us!
TOWARDS GREECE
Lydia and The Church of Philippi: In Troas, during a vision Paul heard a Macedonian imploring him: "Come over to
Macedonia and help us" (Acts 16:9). Immediately, he sailed towards Greece and stopped in Philippi, a commercial city
and Roman colony populated by veterans and Latin peasants, where Hellenism had a great influence upon Judaism.
The house of Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, who asked to be baptized together with her whole household and used to
invite missionaries over during their stay, became the centre of a community. It quickly formed and became one of the
communities most faithful to Paul, by offering him the affection and material supplies of its members (2 Cor. 11:8).
Some years later, before his definitive departure from the region of the Aegean Sea, he desired to celebrate Easter with
this particular community.
The local authorities soon accused Paul of proselytism. At that time, Christianity and Judaism were not yet so
distinct, even if Judaism enjoyed a privileged status. For the very first time, Paul, together with Silas, was imprisoned.
At midnight, while they were praying and singing hymns to God, an earthquake irrupted freeing all the prisoners; the
jailer, seeing the doors open, was about to kill himself thinking that the prisoners had escaped (cf. Acts 16:25-27). Paul
shouted out to him "We are all here" (Acts 16:28). The jailer asked to be baptized along with his family. Paul claimed
that he was a Roman citizen and thus had to be released not secretly but "in triumph", before going back to Lydia's
house.
Thessalonica: A Place of Family Worship: At that time, when Paul went to the Synagogue as he was accustomed to
doing and explained for three consecutive days that according to the Scriptures "the Messiah had to suffer and rise from
the dead" (Acts 17:2-3), the Jews opposed him. The accusation that he was stirring up turmoil against the imperial law
moved his brothers to plan his departure for Beroea. But when the Jews of Thessalonica discovered Paul's whereabouts
and the fact that he was preaching the word of God in Beroea also, they went and persecuted him there as well.
Therefore, Paul had to once again escape by sea all the way to Athens, where he would later be joined by Silas and
Timothy. Shortly thereafter, the community of Thessalonica would receive the first two Letters of Paul which bear
witness to the fervor and restlessness of a young Church.
In Thessalonica, the Christian community's place of worship and religion was the home, that is, the family with all
that it entailed at the time: social relations and work. In particular it gathered in Jason's home just as the Church of
Philippi met at Lydia's.
Athens, The Idols: In the capital of Hellenism, where one would come to study from all over the Roman Empire, Paul
encountered the Greek culture, "exasperated at the sight of the city full of idols" (Acts 17:16). He preached both in the
Synagogue and in the public square even at the Aeropagus thus provoking the curiosity of intellectuals, "Epicurean
and Stoic philosophers", but few of them adhered to the Christian faith. "I even discovered an altar inscribed, `To an
Unknown God'. What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you" (Acts 17:23). (Paul never mentioned this
