4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
My Dear Friends in Christ,
I would like to inform you about some changes
occurring this summer at the Parish. As you have seen, our "snowbirds" are returning to the
North and our space in the Church is getting more spacious. We wish our seasonal parishioners
adieu
and pray for their safe return to us next year. As you also know the price for air conditioning the
Church goes up each year, not to mention that the Church was not built with central air conditioning in
mind, so with little insulation in the Church and the units running constantly, it adds to the cost. What
this means for all of us is that we are going to go to a summer Sunday Schedule for the months of June,
July and August. This schedule affects the Sunday Morning Mass schedule only and, to be fair, all will
have to make an adjustment. The Schedule for June, July and August will be the following: Saturday
confessions and Vigil Mass will remain the same; Sunday morning will change to two Masses at 8 AM
and 10 AM, and the evening Mass will remain at 5:30 PM. In September we will resume the regular
Sunday Schedule.
I know this will take some adjustment. But I ask you to be patient with yourselves;
it will take some time to get used to it. Also, starting on June 1, 2007 we will be going
to one weekday Mass at 8 AM. This weekday change will be permanent and not
seasonal. This reminds all of us the need to pray harder for vocations. Again, may I
mention the traveling vocation chalice, which last weekend no one signed up to pray for
this great need.
Yesterday at 10:30 AM, we celebrated Confirmation with our 8
th
graders. Not only
are they intellectually prepared for High School, but now they have also received an
added boost of the Holy Spirit to be spiritually prepared for their next venture in life and
throughout their lives. Please pray for our children who will be receiving their First
Holy Communion next week!
In today's second reading St. John speaks about a "time of great distress."
He seems to be describing our world. Even though we have opportunities
which ancient people (even the very wealthy) would envy, still we have plenty
of reason for anxiety: hostile nations with powerful weapons and small groups
of terrorists (or lone gunmen) who can wreak terrible havoc; the culture of
violence and casual sex which constantly bombards our children; the inability
to make ends meet even with two parents employed full-time outside the home.
These trends can cause great distress. On top of it all, each one of us has
particular personal and family problems.
Our society seems to be more frazzled, less courteous. In the reading from
Acts we hear about the "violent abuse" which Paul and Barnabas endured. That
phrase characterizes much of today's public discourse. We live in a time of
great distress.
Although as Christians we should do all we can to be courteous and civil, we also should recognize
that distress itself is not necessarily a bad thing. St. John speaks about those who "survived the time of
great distress." They now rejoice before the throne of the Lamb, where they intercede for us. While
distress is never pleasant, it can serve a useful purpose. Mother Angelica once spoke about that. "A
diamond," she said, "at one time was a piece of coal." She then described the "unbelievable pressure"
which turns the "ugly piece of coal" into a diamond. Just so, said Mother Angelica, with our interior
lives. The Lord permits us to be inundated by pressures so he can transform us into
diamonds. He wants to make all of us new.
Because you and I are subjected to pressure and distress, we need shepherds.
We can easily get discouraged, disoriented. We need shepherds to guide us. Let us
give thanks for our Chief Shepherd, Pope Benedict XVI. Let us continue to pray for
his strength and perseverance in guiding us into the ways of truth. As a Church we
are blessed in the person and office of the Pope. Let us rejoice and be glad.
Alleluia! He Is Risen!

First Reading -- Paul and Barnabas
reported how God had opened the door of
faith to the Gentiles (Acts 14:21-27).
Psalm -- I will praise your name forever,
my king and my God (Psalm 145).
Second Reading -- God's dwelling is with
the human race (Revelation 21:1-5a).
Gospel -- This is how all will know that
you are my disciples, if you have love for
one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35).
What do we do to show
that we are Jesus' disciples?
How do we love others
in and outside our own community?

THE SHEPHERD'S FLOCK
In Christian art, the earliest
depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his
crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first
known renderings of Jesus show him as the
Good Shepherd, the image put before us in
today's readings. In the Gospel passage
Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and
his followers are his "flock."
In the first and second readings,
we are told more about the flock. The
passage from Acts assures us that both
Jews and Gentiles are called to follow
Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes
us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of
Revelation we learn that the flock that follows this Lamb of God will
also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before
they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but
know there is a price to be paid.
St. Patrick Catholic Church
celebrates our GOLDEN JUBILEE
in June of 2008
... 50 years of celebrating our faith and
serving our community. We will begin our
year of celebration in September 2007 with
a special day of recollection with Fr. Mitch
Pacwa, S.J. and ending in September
2008 with a 10-day pilgrimage to Ireland
(in the footsteps of St. Patrick).
WE NEED YOUR HELP: Do you have an
idea for a theme for the year? Suggestions
can be dropped by the parish office or in
the collection basket (with your name and
number).
Would you like to join our Jubilee committee and
help us plan our year with a big event every month?
Or, are you one of our original, founding members of
this parish? If so, please contact the parish office
and leave your name and number.
CONGRATULATIONS to all those who

who were baptized as Catholics but have not received the
sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Inquiry

Paul and Barnabas encountered both violent rejection and joyful acceptance of
the message that they preached. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions
when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the Gospel assures us,

Feast Day: May 1
In 1955, Pope Pius XII instituted
the feast of St. Joseph the Worker on
May 1, the day set aside in some
countries to celebrate the dignity of
labor and the rights of workers. With
its emphasis on work, this feast is
also an obvious springboard to total
stewardship. In their pastoral letter
on stewardship the U.S. bishops
declare, "People first of all are
stewards of the personal vocations
they receive from God." Husband of
Mary, foster father of Jesus, and
carpenter of Nazareth, St. Joseph
was a model steward, putting his entire life at the
service of God. The Church teaches that all who, "in
the course of gaining a livelihood for themselves and
their families, offer appropriate service to society... can
be confident that their personal efforts promote the
work of the Creator, confer benefit on their fellowmen,
and help to realize God's plan in history."
God our Father, creator and ruler of the
universe, in every age you call us to develop and
use our gifts for the good of others. With St.
Joseph as our example and guide, help us to do the
work you have asked of us and come to the
rewards you have promised. Amen.
