3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER
My Dear Friends in Christ,
I wish to inform you of some news regarding our School. After four years as
principal, Mrs. Therese Hernandez has taken a position as principal at St. Lawrence in
Tampa. This will place her much closer to home and alleviate the commute for her and
her children. We want to thank Mrs. Hernandez for her dedication and leadership of our
school, especially in overseeing our accreditation renewal. We will miss her and wish her well as she begins this
new endeavor July 1, 2007.
I am also happy to announce that our own Sr. Veronica, SSND has agreed to take over as principal for the
upcoming academic year. This is a great development as she has been on board at the school for the last four
years and therefore there will be less of a transition. The school can continue to move in the great direction it has
been moving. I thank Sr. Veronica for her willingness to take on this new challenge. There will be more news
regarding the school that I will share with you at a later date.
The Rock of Peter: The Papacy
Jesus entrusted a specific authority to Peter:
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose
on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
(Mt 16:19.) The "power of the keys" designates
authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church. Jesus, the Good Shepherd,
confirmed this mandate after his Resurrection: "Feed my sheep." (Jn 21:15-17; cf. 10:11.)
The power to "bind and loose" connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal
judgments, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church. Jesus entrusted this authority to
the Church through the ministry of the apostles (Cf. Mt 18:18.) and in particular through the
ministry of Peter, the only one to whom he specifically entrusted the keys of the kingdom. (CCC 553)
This authority, given to Peter, was to be handed on through the "apostolic succession".
In order that the full and living Gospel might always be preserved in the Church the apostles left bishops as their
successors. They gave them 'their own position of teaching authority.' " (Second Vatican Council, Dei Verbum (DV) 7
art. 2; St. Irenaeus, Adv. haeres. 3, 3, 1: PG 7, 848; Harvey, 2, 9.) Indeed, "the apostolic preaching, which is expressed
in a special way in the inspired books, was to be preserved in a continuous line of succession until the end of time." (DV
8, art. 1.) (CCC 77)
In the office of the apostles there is one aspect that cannot be transmitted: to be the chosen witnesses of the Lord's
Resurrection and so the foundation stones of the Church. But their office also has a permanent aspect. Christ promised
to remain with them always. The divine mission entrusted by Jesus to them "will continue to the end of time, since the
Gospel they handed on is the lasting source of all life for the Church. Therefore,...the apostles took care to appoint
successors." (LG 20; cf. Mt 28:20.) (CCC 860)
Our Holy Father, the bishop of Rome, and all of the bishops in union with him, are the duly
appointed successors of the apostles.
"In order that the mission entrusted to them might be continued after their death, [the apostles] consigned,
by will and testament, as it were, to their immediate collaborators the duty of completing and consolidating
the work they had begun, urging them to tend the whole flock, in which the Holy Spirit had appointed them
to shepherd the Church of God. They accordingly designated such men and then made
the ruling that likewise on their death other proven men should take over their ministry." (LG 20; cf.
Acts
20:28; St. Clement of Rome, Ad Cor. 42, 44: PG 1, 291-300.) (CCC 861)
This living transmission, accomplished in the Holy Spirit, is called Tradition, since it is distinct from
Sacred Scripture, though closely connected to it. Through Tradition, "the Church, in her doctrine,
life, and worship perpetuates and transmits to every generation all that she herself is, all that she believes." (DV 8 art.
1.) "The sayings of the holy Fathers are a witness to the life-giving presence of this Tradition, showing how its riches
are poured out in the practice and life of the Church, in her belief and her prayer." (DV 8, art. 3.) (CCC 78)
The Father's self-communication made through his Word in the Holy Spirit, remains present and active in the Church:
"God, who spoke in the past, continues to converse with the Spouse of his beloved Son. And in the Holy Spirit, through
whom the living voice of the Gospel rings out in the Church -- and through her in the world -- leads believers to the full
truth, and makes the Word of Christ dwell in them in all its richness." (DV 8 art. 3; cf. Col 3:16.) (CCC 79)
We want to congratulate those students who will be making their Confirmation this year on April 28, 2007 at
10:30 a.m. All are invited to celebrate Mass with these young Catholics on their special day!
In the Risen Lord!

First Reading -- The word of the Lord
continued to spread through the whole
region (Acts 13:14, 43-52).
Psalm -- We are his people, the sheep of
his flock (Psalm 100).
Second Reading -- I had a vision of a
great multitude, from every nation,
race, people, and tongue (Revelation
7:9, 14b-17).
Gospel -- My sheep hear my voice; I
know them and give them eternal life
(John 10:27-30).
Have I ever been blessed to direct a
`wandering sheep' back to the Good
Shepherd? What was the outcome?

We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
REDEMPTION
Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested?
He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called
to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in
the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter
does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John's
vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation
shows us the company we keep when
we have faith in the name of Jesus.
We join all living creatures, "countless
in number" from "heaven, earth, under
the earth, in the sea; everything in the
universe" (Revelation 5:11, 13). The
dignity and majesty described in each
reading are in stark contrast to the dark
and pitiful image of Peter and the other
Apostles at the time of Jesus' arrest,
trial, and crucifixion. What a relief that
we can all be redeemed so completely!
Yum, Yum, Yum!
St. Patrick School
will be sponsoring
a Bake Sale on Sunday,
April 22nd, in the school
cafeteria, 9 AM - 12 noon.
Donations of store bought or

Hopefully, you noticed the kitchen and
men's room, and if you haven't, please look
at what has been done. We are currently
accepting donations to renovate the main

the Southwest corner. If you
would like to donate towards this,
please mark your check or
envelope for Msgr. McCall

2008 with a 10-day pilgrimage to Ireland
(in the footsteps of St. Patrick).
WE NEED YOUR HELP: Do you have an idea
for a theme for the year? Suggestions can be
dropped by the parish office or in the collection
basket (with your name and number).
Would you like to join our Jubilee committee
and help us plan our year with a big event
every month? Or, are you one of our
original, founding members of this parish?
If so, please contact the parish office and
leave your name and number.

St. Mark (Feast)
Patron Saint of attorneys, insect bites, lions
Feast Day: April 25
Cardinal Newman wrote, "I am a link
in a chain, a bond of connection
between persons." This is
especially true of the saint we
celebrate today. St. Mark was an
evangelist, a teller of the Gospel
story, but he did not experience
those events firsthand. He heard
the stories from St. Peter and wrote them down,
"careful not to omit or falsify anything of what he had
heard." His Gospel recounts the life of Christ from
Bethlehem to Calvary, not as a purely historical
record, but as a proclamation of the truth that Jesus is
the Son of God. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, St. Mark
used his talents as a writer with the result that the
Word he heard and believed could be heard and
believed and lived by Christians 20 centuries later! In
the Acts of the Apostles we learn that he also made
several journeys with St. Paul and consoled St. Paul
while he was in prison in Rome. St. Mark, pray for
us, that we may use our gifts to become living
links between the Gospel you preached and those
who have not yet heard that Jesus Christ is Lord.
