DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday! How fitting that we
would remind ourselves again of God's Mercy on this Sunday when we
conclude the Octave of Easter! I hope many of you will join us in our 13th
annual Divine Mercy Celebration starting at 2:30 PM in the Church.
How wondrous was our entering into the Passion week as a parish
community! We began on Palm Sunday evening with the re-creation of
Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. Thanks to Betty Archer, our director, the Apostle actors (the men
of our parish), the behind the scene stage hands for all their time and effort, for Sr. Kathleen and Paulette
King: it was a great performance. I look forward to what the St. Patrick Players will be doing next.
Our Sacred Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil were amazing liturgical
reminders of God's love and mercy. These events aided us in prayerfully entering into the Lord's
Passion Death and Resurrection. Special thanks to the Choir for aiding us so beautifully in our worship
and prayer. I would like to also thank the Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro and Janet & Paul
Friederich who cooked the soups for our simple supper on Good Friday Evening. Carl Gross and his
helpers did an outstanding job in decorating our Church for the Easter festivities.
I especially want to warmly welcome those men, women and children who were baptized, who were
received into full communion or were confirmed at the Easter Vigil. As they begin or continue on their
journey with Christ as Catholics may they realize they are now part of our family and may we as St.
Patrick family welcome them and aid them in their new journey of faith.
Scripture Reflection
Today we hear that the apostles, bound by the imprisonment of
fear, have locked themselves into the upper room and that "Jesus came
and stood before them ... Then he breathed on them and said:
`Receive
the Holy Spirit. If you forgive men's sins, they are forgiven them; if
you hold them bound, they are held bound.'
"
In this Easter season, we celebrate the Divine gift of the third person of the Blessed Trinity, the Holy
Spirit, as an outpouring of the Risen Christ. Today the Church shares in the Resurrection and the life of
Christ by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. What does this gift mean to the Church? The peace of Christ
is always ours with the forgiveness of our sins.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches us what the Church has always believed by
professing in the Creed "I believe in the forgiveness of sins": our gift for salvation in the Holy Spirit.
The Creed links "the forgiveness of sins" with profession of faith in the Holy Spirit because the risen
Christ entrusted to the apostles the power to forgive sins when he gave them the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of the forgiveness of sins: it unites us to Christ, who died and
rose, and gives us the Holy Spirit. By Christ's will, the Church possesses the power to forgive our sins
after baptism and exercises it through bishops and priests normally in the sacrament of Penance.
In the forgiveness of sins, both priests and sacraments are instruments which our Lord Jesus Christ, the
only author and liberal giver of salvation, wills to use in order to efface our sins and give us the grace
of justification. (CCC 984-987)
If you would be preserved "from all anxiety" as we pray in the Mass, regularly practice the Sacrament of
Confession. Salvation begins now as we are released from the bonds of fear and anxiety, in the first
place by the forgiveness of our sins. Confession is an Easter sacrament.
Celebrate Easter: celebrate Confession. The Holy Spirit will give you the
peace of confidence in Christ's saving passion and Resurrection.
Praised Be Jesus Christ!

First Reading -- God exalted Jesus as
leader and savior (Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41).

Psalm -- I will praise you, Lord, for you
have rescued me (Psalm 30).

Second Reading -- To the Lamb be
blessing and honor, glory and might
(Revelation 5:11-14).

Gospel -- When the disciples came
ashore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish
on it and bread (John 21:1-19 [1-14]).
Do you recall experiencing
real hunger in your spiritual life?
How did you find the answer
to your need?
Readings for the Week Ahead:
April 22, 2007
3rd Sunday of Easter
We are . . . Disciples in Mission
Sharing our Faith in Christ all year!
JOINING THE
COMPANY OF BELIEVERS
What will help you to believe?
Today's scripture readings tell of
faith and doubt. They offer stories
"recorded to help you believe," as
the passage from John's Gospel
(20:31) remarks today. There is an
urgency about this. On this second
Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of
believers--countless men and women who witnessed the
power of the Apostles' faith.
There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ.
The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports
John's mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims,
"Once I was dead, but now I live" (Revelation 1:18). The
Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus
and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who
have come along later must have faith so that we can have life.

e warmly welcome ...
In the Sacraments of Initiation we are freed from the power of darkness and
joined to Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. We receive the Spirit of filial adoption and are part of
the entire people of God in the celebration of the Lord's death and resurrection.
At the Easter Vigil, we were pleased to welcome into our Church family three people
who have received the three sacraments of initiation: Kyle Ahern, John Best, Selena
Rivera, and two infants who received Baptism: Sage LeBlanc and Jakob Robinson.
We are also pleased to welcome into full communion with the Church those
candidates who received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation:
Amy LeBlanc, Dawn Adamo, Jason Spence, Gabriele Hall, Nicole
Supprenant and Kalyn Reynolds. Congratulations to all of you.
May your lives be richly blessed and strengthened by the grace of
Christ. The Community of St. Patrick welcomes you and offers to you
our love and support as you continue on your journey in faith.
The solemn celebration of the FEAST of DIVINE MERCY will be held TODAY, Divine Mercy Sunday,
April 15th, in the Church, starting at 2:30 PM. The celebration will include the
recitation of the Scriptural Rosary, Procession with the Divine Image, Exposition,
Chaplet, and Benediction. Please join our parish community in observing our 13th
annual commemoration of this Great and Merciful day of the Lord.

As Pope, John Paul the Great was responsible for reopening the cause of Divine Mercy and
named the first Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. He also canonized the first saint
of the Millennium, St. Faustina, Apostle of Divine Mercy, and died during the Vigil of Divine
Mercy Sunday two years ago.

"Blessed are they who have not seen and yet believed," Jesus says in today's

St. Anselm (1033-1109)
Doctor of the Church
Feast Day: April 21
St. Anselm was born in north-
ern Italy. At 27, he entered a
Benedictine Abbey in France
and became first the prior and
eventually the abbot. When he
was 60, he was appointed
Archbishop of Canterbury
where he vigorously defended
the freedom of the Church and
was twice exiled. An original thinker and a patient,
gentle teacher, he was a man of many gifts. His biog-
rapher describes him as a man of "benevolence, kind-
ness, love, gentleness, meekness, pardon, [and] smil-
ing exhortation." He was also an insightful theologian,
the "father of Scholasticism," whose contributions to
systematic theology always emphasized the contem-
plative and spiritual aspects. "Credo ut intelligam" (I
believe that I may understand) he said, emphasizing
the need to be guided by the light of faith rather than
to rely on reason alone. Today as we celebrate the
life of St. Anselm, it would be good stewardship of our
spiritual gifts to pray as he did:
"Oh God, let me know you and love you
so that I may find my joy in you;
and if I cannot do so fully in this life,
let me at least make some progress every day,
until at last that knowledge, love and joy
come to me in all their plenitude."
Amen.
